Urmston man appeals for charity backing

AN URMSTON man whose family has been ravaged by cancer is running the London Marathon for Macmillan Cancer Support.

Stephen Holloway, 57, a financial planner from Winchester Road, lost his father, mother, sister and mother-in-law to the disease, and is running in aid of his brother-in-law John, who has inoperable prostate cancer.

mr Holloway spoke about how cancer has affected him, such as discovering his father’s body as an 11-year-old.

“It was quite traumatic, we were a really close family unit,” he said.

mr Holloway also stressed the need for men to attend regular checks for prostate cancer after John’s ordeal.

“Perhaps there were symptoms that had been missed.

“There’s a macho-thing of just carrying on,” he said.

mr Holloway, a seasoned marathon-runner who has completed races including the Great North Run and the new York Marathon, hopes to raise thousands of pounds for charity.

mr Holloway said he chose to raise money for Macmillan to thank them for the support they have given his family and to ensure they can keep giving much-needed help to others affected by the disease.

He is aiming to run a time of under four hours, an impressive feat he nearly managed in new York in 2008.
