my husband is having issues. he has had hemmroid problems before. he has never been like he was today, lots of pain in his lower back, stomach, and rectum. he refuses to go to the doctor. hardheaded.

I had colon cancer. My symptoms did not show up until the tumor got quite large. first sign was long periods of pain in the region of what seemed like my stomach which got worse as time went by until it was hurting all night long. next sign was sudden weight loss (4 pounds in one month without trying to lose weight). next symptom was tiredness (low iron because the tumor was bleeding). I could not see blood in my stool but a test I had run detected it. if he's got ongoing pain then he really should be seeing a gastroenterologist. It took me about a year and a half to figure out what was wrong with me after tests. thank God I was persistent because that is what saved me. I had surgery one year ago today, September 5th. I never dreamed I would ever get cancer and I was trying to do all the right things. It will be a huge mistake if he doesn't go to the doctor to find out what is wrong with him. It could cost him his life.

Dear Mayo Clinic: My son was diagnosed with Crohn’s disease at age 13, and he’s now 19. He used to be active, but now he’s exhausted. He’s been on numerous medications, but nothing works for him. what can be done? He has been bleeding a lot, and has severe pain when going to the bathroom, up to eight times each day.

Reply: Crohn’s disease can indeed be a very distressing and frustrating illness, but a determined approach to treatment can often result in symptom relief.

A chronic condition, Crohn’s disease causes inflammation of the digestive tract. While inflammation can occur anywhere from one’s mouth to the anus, it has a special predilection for affecting the small intestine. the cause is unknown. Symptoms can be mild or severe enough to disrupt everyday activities.

Crohn’s disease can occur in patients of all ages, but peak incidence is between ages 15 and 30 years. Symptoms can be nonspecific, but often include diarrhea, abdominal pain, reduced appetite and weight loss. Crohn’s disease can’t be cured but it may go into remission for long periods of time, particularly with medical treatment.

For patients like your son, who continue to have problematic symptoms despite aggressive treatment, I would recommend a thorough reassessment by a physician who specializes in this area of medicine. Seek out a board-certified gastroenterologist with expertise in treating Crohn’s disease.

The doctor will also need to consider other conditions that could be driving the symptoms. one example could be an undiagnosed infection. Aggressive treatment of any coexisting conditions could help relieve your son’s symptoms.

There’s a long list of medication options to manage Crohn’s disease. Even if you’ve tried several, there may be other choices and combinations to consider. your son might also think about participating in a clinical trial to evaluate new ways to treat the disease.

Stress can have an adverse affect on various diseases, and stress reduction may play a role in managing symptoms of Crohn’s disease.

I wish there were an easy formula to improve your son’s health. but the treatment of Crohn’s disease can be complicated, and your son will need to work closely with his medical team.

Even when it seems like you’ve tried everything, there are likely to be more options to consider. MYRTLE BEACH, SC (WMBF) – Doctors offices along the Grand Strand are getting busier with people already suffering from seasonal allergies.

From sniffling to sneezing, doctors say the warm weather is making symptoms pop up in those allergic to various types of pollen.

Dr. Joseph Moyer, allergist with the Allergy, Asthma and Sinus Center, attributes many patients problems to trees being tricked into thinking it's spring and spreading their pollen early.

“We started to pick up a lot of tree pollen during the warm days that we had last week. We also noticed more people coming in with symptoms, your typical allergy symptoms,” Moyer said.

“I sneeze, my eyes burn, my nose runs. I get all choked up and my head hurts. It's just a general feeling of yuck,” said Laura Forbes, who has allergies.

Meteorologists say the pollen counts do reflect a high level of allergens in the air, especially over the last few days.

Moyer recommends allergy sufferers try over the counter antihistamines and avoid long periods of outdoor activity.

He says the allergy season is just beginning and it's expected to get worse as more things bloom later in the spring.

“This is just the beginning I'm afraid. the cooler weather may slow things down a little bit, but I think the trend is gonna be that the weather is warming up,” he said.

If medicines and avoidance don't work Moyer says it's time to see a doctor.

Hello everyone, I hope you can be of some help.

I am a 19 year old male. a few weeks ago, I had a severe panic attack after smoking weed. I linked the physical symptoms of the experience to a video I had watched on schizophrenia a few weeks prior (which involved a similar sense of derealisation). Thereafter, I became convinced that I would develop the condition.

This was not an entirely irrational conclusion. I seem to have a variety of risk factors, which together terrify me in their potential to manifest themselves in a serious mental illness. for one, I come from a dysfunctional family, where my parents used me as a battleground for custody; I was not physically or sexually abused, but I did have a sexual experience in my early childhood that generated guilt and panic for years afterwards. I only recently revealed the details of it to somebody else.

Also, I went through long periods of isolation in my adolescence, mainly because I wasn’t ‘normal’ like everybody else. I should say that I wasn’t ‘odd’ in the schizotypal way, but I had an eating disorder and was generally quite eccentric, which didn’t go down too naturally in an old-fashioned boys’ school. I therefore spent much time alone (though this isn’t to say that I didn’t have friends), and it wasn’t until I got a girlfriend at the age of 17 that I truly divulged my problems.

Around this time, I began to smoke cannabis regularly – not quite every day, but almost. Admittedly, I was never a ‘heavy’ smoker, mostly smoking lightly late at night, but the resulting anxiety has shown that it did some damage to my mind. I’m worried that my use of cannabis permanently affected my neurodevelopment, and it goes without saying that I will not be smoking again.

Additionally, I learned today that older fathers are more likely to have schizophrenic children. my father was 38 or so when I was conceived. This is yet another factor that is concerning me.

And so, as I see it, these are the seeds of a schizophrenic disorder. I should balance them out, to show that my thinking is not entirely one-sided. After all, there is no history of psychosis in my family (although both my brother and sister suffer from anxiety and depression). however, they are quite a bit older (my sister the nearest in age at 26), and so do not have the added risk factor of an older father; they also grew up in slightly better family circumstances. Nevertheless, I also do not fit into the respective cluster of personality disorders, as I have always been more anxious and obsessive-compulsive. Again, however, I’ve heard these are quite prominent qualities in the schizophrenic community, and so there seems to be no escape from the possibility.

It is important to say that I have been assessed by an Early Intervention Team for Psychosis. they concluded that I was not psychotic, nor currently ‘at risk’ of developing such symptoms. Instead they deemed me to be suffering from extreme anxiety, and accordingly have referred me to a cognitive-behavioural therapist. however, they naturally were not at liberty to predict whether I would do so in the future, and it is on this uncertainty that my obsessional thinking feeds.

And so, this is a broad, inevitably limited overview of my situation. I worry every day that schizophrenia is latent within me, and will unleash itself once the time is ripe. I am willing to do anything to prevent its onset, as I desperately want to maintain my grasp on reality. I want an honest opinion on whether my situation is truly hopeless, or whether my risk factors will not necessarily add up to a psychotic disorder. Thank you for your help.

ONE of the mysteries of Parkinson’s disease is a step closer to being solved after Sydney researchers identified a simple way of diagnosing the condition.

Despite obvious physical symptoms at later stages, Parkinson’s disease – the second-most common neurological condition in Australia after dementia – is extremely difficult to diagnose. But now doctors may be able to use ultrasound to identify changes in the brain, increasing the chances of early diagnosis.

Associate Professor Kay Double, a principal research fellow at Neuroscience Research Australia, believes Parkinson’s disease can be diagnosed using a simple 10-minute ultrasound. Ultrasound is inexpensive and safe, unlike most brain-scan technologies, she said.

Early tests had been promising and her research team was recruiting more people to be tested.

Until now, doctors had been forced to rely on ambiguous physical symptoms such as tremors, muscle stiffness and slowness of movement.

“The problem is these symptoms can all occur for many other reasons,” said Professor Double, explaining that about 30 per cent of initial diagnoses were incorrect.

Delays in diagnosis meant long periods with stressful, unexplained and often untreated symptoms.
