I got pricked on the wrist from barbed wire (brand new on a roll. no rust.) at a store today and other people have said I might get tetanus. now I'm scared cause that's not a sicness you want to wait to see if you get any symptoms from. Sympotms like lockjaw and death! But people get pricked by barbed wire all the time right? do they all get tetanus?

If in doubt, you can go to the doctor and request a Tetanus shot. Since the barbed wire was brand new, and showed no sign of rust, you're probably okay. Still, it's always good to get a Tetanus shot (at least every couple of years or so-check with the doctor) if you ever get stung by a bee, or step on a rusted nail, etc.

ok, once again, rust itself (the rough surface due to rust can harbor the spore) and fecal matter (the spore is usually present in high organic soils … feces/ manure treated or not!) NEVER rule out the possibility of tetanus because you were in an area without feces present. Construction sites are just as likely to provide the puncture wound (and ergo the anaerobic environment it needs to flourish) and spore deposition as a farm.
You should have had a tetanus vaccine as part of your normal, routine school or employment requirements. call your doctor and find out if you are due for a booster (they are recc. every 10 years for an adult.)
If the wound is not deep, and you cleaned it well, then there is only a small chance that anything will come of it.. but for your own peace of mind, call and find out if you need a booster. not only will the booster act as treatment if given in time, it will save you worry in the future!

No, all people don't get tetanus. It's unlikely that new wire will cause a problem and if the wound was superficial, there's even less to worry about.

you are thinking barb wire and tetanus maybe cause barb wire is on farms around animals and that is a big tetanus problem from waste
if the barb wire was new then no animal waste so thats good
was it a puncture? or a scrap?
puncture is bad because the bacteria might be in so far that a antibiotic cant reach it.
put some antibiotic on it and if you are in school tetanus shots are part of your vaccination so you should be ok
i wouldnt worry about tetanus to much just make sure its clean
this of course only applies if its not so big you need stitches…good luck

and I said nothing about thumbs down and i also never said you ONLY have to worry about tetanus if you are around animal waste and/or barbwire I was trying to help the poster by answering the specific question they asked and they should not be worried about some thing that had such a low chance of being true.i have excellent manners and you do not just ask my aunt hazel!!!

If you are worried you should go to a doctor for advice and not waste time.
Do you know when you had your last tetanus shot and booster? you need to get booster every five years…..
If you have had your shot then you needn't worry about tetanus.
A cut, puncture wound, laceration or other wound can lead to a tetanus infection and toxin production if you don't have immunity. so you are right to be worried.

No people who get pricked by barbed wire don't all get tetanus and the reason might be that the barbed wire they got pricked with may not have contained spores from the bacteria Clostridium tetani which causes tetanus and the second reason might be that they might have immunity against the bacteria because they had their shot……
Tetanus is treatable if you go to the doctor soon enough…

It is highly unlikely that you are going to get tetanus from this kind of wound. Tetanus is a relatively uncommon problem and is almost always associated with wounds that are contaminated with feces.
