I am 13, and babysit for a 3 year-old boy. I got a message from his mom saying that he has a highly contagious viral infection. I have a fever, sore throat, and cold symptoms. What could the infection be?

I just got back from the Dr. with my 2 year old, and she was tested for a bacterial infection (strep-throat) which came back negative, as a result she was diagnosed with a viral infection, which is just that a "viral infection" same symptoms that you described which last roughly 5 days.

Our Dr. explained that the viral infection is common and the way they treat a viral infection is with over-the-counter pain medicine like Tylenol or Ibuprofen for the sore throat pain and fever and also suggested popcicles or icecream if you're having a hard time eating due to the sore throat.

If you're concerned I would reccommend visiting a Dr. and not neccessarilly taking medical advice from anyone over the internet.

If you have experience with either of these conditions, what did you go through when you first started having symptoms? How long did you put up with your symptoms before seeking medical advice? did it take a while to get it diagnosed? any stories of personal experience with either of these would be so helpful.

Try your local library or book store, they have a medical encyclopedia for children and adults but I want to stress that these are great books but in know way take the place of a doctors medical advice. If you are unhappy or unsure of a diagnosis or lack of, then I'd suggest getting a 2nd opinion
