OAK Lodge residential care home decided to reach out into the community and offer a service to carers who deal with loved ones with any kind of memory loss dementia.

They decided to offer a place to meet socially on a monthly basis and the Forget Me not Club was suggested by Acorn Unit manager Carol Packer and members of staff who realised there was a real need for more education for carers in this situation and a place they could go for a coffee and a chat with others facing the same difficulties.

The initial meeting was set up on Frida July 8th, to hold an open forum and gauge opinion from the carers as to what format they required and when the club would be best held.

Some of the group pointed out that there was a carers group in Chard already meeting every second Monday but that unlike Forget Me not it was for any type of care, not specific to memory loss issues as suggested for the Oak Lodge one.

Many felt they needed more information as to what to expect in the future and symptoms to watch out for so it was agreed that professional support in the form of talks and information would be appreciated. Equally the need for getting together with people in the same boat was considered just as useful. A representative from the Alzheimer’s Society was present and the question was raised as to whether the group could meet to coincide with the memory cafe in the Guildhall or the Singing for the Brain sessions in Ilminster, where they could leave their loved one (subject to their level of dependence) while they came to the Forget Me not Club. Often the biggest issues for carers was whether they would be able to come away alone for those vital few hours of relief while someone else watched over their loved one.

Fritha Irwin, dementia lead for Majestica who run Oak Lodge, took on board all the suggestions of the carers and agreed that providing educational sessions I addition to the space for a social meeting was vital. the club is open to all comers who are caring for someone with memory loss at any level. for more information please call Oak Lodge 01460 67258.

yes, anger and agitation can be very common symptoms of dementia. You would be angry too if you didn't know what was happening.
Being diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease, with its symptoms of memory loss and gradual slowing of brain functions, is challenging enough already. but for those who are affected, one of the condition’s most frustrating features is that the diagnosis itself isn’t definitive.

Because the cognitive decline of Alzheimer’s is nearly indistinguishable from other forms of dementia, only an autopsy that confirms the presence of protein plaques in the brain can conclusively diagnose the disease. but new research suggests that a blood test may soon be able to detect the degenerative neurological condition in living patients, well before the first symptoms emerge. (More on Time.com: The Top 10 Medical Breakthroughs of 2010)

Led by Dr. Kristine, Yaffe, a professor of psychiatry at the University of California, San Francisco, a team of scientists studied a group of nearly 1,000 elderly adults for nine years. at the beginning of the study, the researchers took blood samples from the volunteers and measured levels of beta-amyloid, the protein that builds up in the brains of Alzheimer’s patients. Lower levels of amyloid in the blood presumably mean that more of the substance is being pulled out of circulation and deposited in the brain, where it is embedded between nerve cells and interferes with their normal function.

The elderly volunteers also completed a survey designed to test their cognitive functions, including memory and executive skills such as the ability to learn and retain new information.

After nine years, those with the lowest blood levels of beta-amyloid had dropped nearly twice the number of points on tests of cognitive function, compared with those who had higher levels of the protein. the level of amyloid in the blood, then, served as an indicator for future dementia risk.

“That was kind of exciting because it really looks like in our hands, the blood test did work, and we’re finding something really early — these people didn’t have dementia,” says Yaffe, whose study was published in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA). (More on Time.com: 5 New Rules for good Health)

Testing for amyloid in the blood is only one of the many ways that experts are attempting to pick up the first signs of Alzheimer’s in living patients. recent studies suggest that measuring amyloid in the spinal fluid, which has a more direct connection to the brain, may also be useful, as well as testing for other telltale proteins in the blood, known as biomarkers.

Even more encouraging for Yaffe was the second set of results from her experiment. because Alzheimer’s researchers have also known that about 10% to 20% of patients who show evidence of amyloid on autopsy never exhibit signs of dementia or cognitive decline, Yaffe’s team thought the amyloid blood test could help explain this puzzling result. the most popular theory involves something called cognitive reserve: the idea is that people with more cognitive reserve are better able to compensate for the loss of nerves to amyloid, and can continue to function without signs of the disease even while it is ravaging their brain.

Cognitive reserve is still an undefined concept, but it is generally thought to involve everything from having a larger brain (and therefore more neural connections to keep it going) to maintaining cognitive networks by continually engaging them in learning new things.

To test this idea, Yaffe further stratified her study group by education and literacy, two commonly accepted ways of measuring cognitive reserve. It turned out that among those with low levels of amyloid in the blood, participants with higher education (more than a high school diploma) or at least a sixth-grade level of literacy were able to compensate, and experienced half the drop in cognitive function scores as those with lower education and less literacy.

That finding gives Yaffe hope that in coming years, early tests, including one for amyloid in the blood, could identify people at high risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease well before their first cognitive symptoms emerge. These individuals could then get a head start in using interventions that could treat or even prevent their disease. at the moment, no such medical therapies exist, but there is evidence that people with denser networks of friends and family, as well as those who engage their minds by learning new skills or a new language or by playing card games, are able to hold back mental decline better than those who do not take advantage of these opportunities. (More on Time.com: 5 Ways to Get the Most Out of Health Reform)

“It does really look like the cognitive reserve hypothesis is important,” says Yaffe. “And [our results] also imply that it you have an elderly person and she gets a blood test and her amyloid is low, it may mean she is at risk of later cognitive problems. but this group might be one to target for more cognitive activity or other strategies that might prevent the decline.”

Yaffe acknowledges that an amyloid blood test won’t likely be the final word in an Alzheimer’s diagnosis. It’s still not entirely clear whether or how much of the protein in the blood signals disease — other conditions can result in amyloid in the blood as well, and it’s difficult to set threshold levels to identify when normal amounts of amyloid have increased enough to tip the scales to indicate a disease state.

The same technology could also make it easier to spot other disease such as Parkinson’s and hard-to-detect cancers, said the researchers.

Around 750,000 people in the UK suffer from dementia, more than half of whom have Alzheimer’s.

At present the only way for sure to know if someone has suffered from the condition is to carry out a brain examination after their death.

Scientists have long been trying to discover ways of detect antibodies, chemicals and other substances in the blood that identify the body is fighting the condition.

But this has proved elusive until now.

In the new study, scientists at the Scripps Research Institute in Florida, have come up with a new approach by manufacturing thousands of molecules in different shapes – known as peptoids -designed to react with antibodies.

This suggests these antibodies are unique to the condition.

Further tests on six patients and laboratory mice showed that it was 93 per cent accurate and could eventually be used to detect the condition up to five years in advance.

Professor Thomas Kodadek, who led the research, said tests on thousands more patients was needed to test the accuracy of the test.

“If this works in Alzheimer’s disease, it suggests it is a pretty general platform that may work for a lot of different diseases,” he said.

Experts described the research as exciting but cautioned that it is still in the early stages.

Dr Susanne Sorensen, head of research at the Alzheimer’s Society, said: “This is a refreshing new approach to diagnosing Alzheimer’s disease which holds promise.

“Early diagnosis is very important and a simple non-invasive blood test for Alzheimer’s disease would be invaluable.

“However, this research is in the early stages and more investigation is needed to find out it if it can be developed in to a reliable and practical test for the future.

“As a million people develop dementia in the next 10 years we urgently need more funding to find reliable tests for the diseases that cause dementia.”

Dr Bryce Vissel, head of research into neurodegenerative diseases at the Garvan Institute in Australia, said: “This exciting study has significant implications for advancing understanding and treatments of diseases like multiple sclerosis and Alzheimer’s disease.

“This is a step towards being able to develop better treatments because we may now be able to identify people early in the disease and test drugs on them before the disease is too advanced.

“Perhaps even more importantly, the study offers a new approach to identify disease markers in the blood which could have significant implications for accurately diagnosing a range of diseases.”

The research was published in the journal Cell.

A new breakthrough formula called Advanced Liver Support™ from Health Resources™helps boost the health of the liver and flush out years of sludge from the environment, foods and drugs.

Bessemer, AL (PRWEB) December 26, 2010

If the liver is not functioning at optimum levels, then one could suffer from symptoms such as high cholesterol levels, poor digestion, allergies, memory loss, blood sugar problems, decreased circulation, poor eyesight, food sensitivities, headaches and lower back pain, according to the Mayo Clinic online resource guide. While these are conditions that could eventually require medical attention, supplementing with the nutrients contained in the recently released Advanced Liver Support™ from Health Resources™ can help support the liver’s maximum function to promote improved health within the entire body.

The guide from the Mayo Clinic indicates that there are many varied reasons for poor liver function, liver failure or in serious cases, liver diseases such as cirrhosis. These conditions can occur because of over-the-counter (OTC) medications, prescription drugs, exposure to normal environmental toxins, a fat-laden diet, over-consumption of alcohol, coffee or tea, stress and anxiety, pollution and/or incidence of kidney stones or gallbladder stones.

Advanced Liver Support™ is designed to support optimal liver function with key nutrients that enhance the liver’s healthy detoxifying capability. Nutrients known to help detoxify and clear the liver of buildup, toxins and chemicals include milk thistle, artichoke leaf, N-acetyl cysteine (NAC) and Chinese skullcap.

Milk thistle has been shown to support long-term protection of the liver from the metabolites of over-the-counter and prescription drugs, according to Current Therapeutic Research. other studies indicate this nutrient can help rid the liver of damaging free radicals, cleanse the liver of toxic buildup and increase the production of healthy liver enzymes.

According to Phytomedicine, artichoke leaf has been scientifically demonstrated to enhance the production of bile and improve overall organ function. Bile is needed in the liver to help break down fats and facilitate the proper elimination of wastes and toxins. Artichoke leaf has been used for centuries in Europe to help stimulate the regeneration of healthy liver tissue for improved liver function.

N-acetyl cysteine (NAC) is an amino acid that can help minimize the damaging effects of metabolic byproducts of OTC and prescription medications. According to the New England Journal of Medicine and Alternative Medicine Review, NAC can help counteract and remove toxins and heavy metals from the body, protect the liver from alcohol and chemical drug damage and normalize the inflammatory response.

Chinese skullcap has been used in traditional Chinese medicine for more than 2,000 years as a remedy for liver support, anxiety, muscle spasms, urinary health, occasional sleep difficulties and various other ailments. When it comes to liver health, research studies reveal Chinese skullcap can help inhibit toxic substances from causing inflammation… eliminate free radical damage… and detoxify the liver from many other harmful substances.

To help boost the health of the liver and flush out years of sludge from the environment, foods and drugs, take advantage of the breakthrough formula called Advanced Liver Support™ from Health Resources™ that’s guaranteed to improve overall health.
