I have had almost every symptom imaginable in all of my pregnancies, except hemrrhoids (spelling), now I don't know whats going on but I feel like I have lockjaw! Is that common in pregnancy or is it totally unrelated?

lockjaw is tetnus. And that can harm or worse you and/or your unborn child

Tetanus is caused by the bacterium Clostridium tetani, the spores of which are widespread in the environment. The disease is caused by the action of a neurotoxin, produced by the bacteria when they grow in the absence of oxygen, e.g. in dirty wounds or in the umbilical cord if it is cut with a non-sterile instrument.

Tetanus is characterized by muscle spasms, initially in the jaw muscles. as the disease progresses, mild stimuli may trigger generalized tetanic seizure-like activity, which contributes to serious complications and eventually death unless supportive treatment is given.

Tetanus can be prevented by the administration of tetanus toxoid, which induces specific antitoxins. To prevent maternal and neonatal tetanus, tetanus toxoid needs to be given to the mother before or during pregnancy, and clean delivery and cord care needs to be ensured.

it is not related and you should see your dr. to make sure that is not what it is. have you had a tetanis shot in the past ten years? you can get it just from walking out side barefoot. any wound contaminated with soil, feces, dirt or manure can become contaminated with tetanus. Anyone who is inadequately vaccinated against tetanus is at risk. Tetanus occurs throughout the world. you don't have to step on somthing rusty like it is commonly said. here are some of the symptoms to look for.
– Headache
– Stiffness of the jaw (lockjaw)
– Severe muscle spasms
– Sweating
– Fever
– Stiffness of abdominal muscles
– Difficulty swallowing
• Lockjaw is one of the most dangerous symptoms because it can lead to death by suffocation1
• Symptoms usually begin about 8 days after infection, but may range in onset from 3 days to 3 weeks1
being pregnant doen't increase or decrease your chances of getting it.

With pregnacy you don't want to take the chance. The slightest change in your health will change the health in your baby as well. Finding out your answer is as simple as going in to see your doctor and getting some blood drawn. I don't think you should take the risk or not finding out for sure what is causing the problem.

I've never heard of symptoms like that in pregnacy. I have heard of Bell's Palsy..it kinda makes your face paralyzed…and happens a lot in pregnacy. Lock Jaw..? Tetanus shot? LOL. Wow. 5th pregnacy. I'm impressed! good luck!

I have been prengnant 6 times and never had that a symptom, so my guess is it is unrelated. But make sure you tell your doctor about it!

Such common summertime activities as gardening, deck building and other outdoor renovations can put Canadians at risk for tetanus, infectious disease experts said in a reminder announcement this week.

Because the toxin that causes tetanus is found in all kinds of soil, the Canadian Coalition for Immunization Awareness and Promotion is advising that all Canadians should make sure they are up to date with their tetanus vaccinations.

Most Canadians have had at least one vaccination against tetanus, but many don’t realize that need a booster vaccine every 10 years.

Adults over age 60 are at increased risk of tetanus infection, since many were never immunized when they were younger or may have forgotten to get their booster shot, says Dr. Susan Bowles, vice-chair of the organization.

While many Canadians think of rusty nails when they think of tetanus, the bacteria that causes the infection — Clostridium tetani — is found in all kinds of soil, dirt and dust.

The bacteria usually enter through a cut or scrape and then bring on symptoms such as “lockjaw” (stiffness of the jaw), muscle spasms and sometimes breathing problems. It’s a serious disease that can lead to paralysis and even death.

Without treatment, one out of four infected people will die, says the U.S. National Institutes of Health.

Coalition chair Dr. Bonnie Henry says spring is a great time for Canadians to check their immunization records and to visit their family doctor or public health office about getting a tetanus booster.

“The tetanus booster is safe, effective and free for all Canadians, so there is no reason why anyone should be unprotected,” she said in a release.

Other steps to help avoid tetanus infection:

• Wear protective gloves, clothing and footwear while renovating and gardening.
• Be mindful when using tools that can cause injury to skin.
• If injured, immediately clean wounds thoroughly with warm water and soap

Do this even if, what appears to be, a rabid dog only licks a previous wound on you.

• for extra precaution, you may apply a tourniquet and a rubber vacuum cup as for a snake bite (which see for further details). if acid is not available, you may burn the wound with a magnifying glass in the sunlight. Or use a red-hot iron. then treat as for a regular burn until it is healed. this treatment usually prevents further worry. so says this backwoodsman.

• Jethro Kloss has a lengthy article on this in his book, Back to Eden (pp. 490-495) (see order sheet). He also says to put hydrochloric acid on the wound, to neutralize the rabies poison in the saliva. then, after discussing a number of herbal remedies to also use, he quotes a scientific paper by an M. Buisson, read to the French Academy of Arts and Sciences. M. Buisson had accidentally contracted rabies from a women suffering with it. By the time he discovered he had it, the disease was advanced and he knew he was soon to die. Kloss quotes a London newspaper which reported on the scientific paper:

“Concluding from these various symptoms that he was suffering with hydrophobia, he [Buisson] resolved to make an end of himself by suffocating himself in a vapor [steam] bath. with this view, he raised the heat very, very, hot, but was delighted, no less than surprised, to find that all his pains disappeared. He went out of the bath completely cured, ate a hearty dinner, and drank more freely than was usual with him. He adds that he has treated more than fourscore persons who have been bitten by mad dogs in a similar manner, and they all recovered, with the exception of a child seven years old, who died in a vapour bath he was administering.”-Kloss, Back to Eden, p. 493.

• Water therapists normally work with a steam bath temperature of 115o-120o F. (See our Water Therapy Manual (see order sheet) for detailed information on steam baths, pp. 131-138.) those with diabetes, valvular heart disease, extreme arteriosclerosis, or emaciation should not use a steam bath.

Kloss also quotes a German newspaper which discussed an incident which happened in Saxony:

• “A Saxon forester named Gastell, at the age of 82, unwilling to take to the grave with him a secret of so much importance, has made public in the Leipsic Journal the method which he used for fifty years, and he affirms he has rescued many human beings and cattle from the fearful death of hydrophobia. Wash the wound immediately with warm water and vinegar; let it dry, and then pour upon the wound a few drops of hydrochloric acid, and that will neutralize and destroy the poison of the saliva.”-Op. cit., p. 494.

We included the above as a matter of historical interest. Now we return to modern physiologic and medical theory on rabies:

• nearly all human rabies cases result from dog bites. the animal can transmit disease before it shows symptoms of rabies; but, except in rare instances, the symptoms will appear within 10 days if it is rabid. the disease is always fatal, unless it is halted by a series of Pasteur treatments, which are started before symptoms first appear.

• if at all possible, it is crucial to confine the animal which inflicted the bite so it can be observed. the course of the disease runs so fast that the animal should show symptoms of rabies before they begin to appear in the person. if the animal is rabid, it will show clear signs within 2 weeks, then the person bitten should begin the Pasteur series of rabies shots (unless circumstances are clear that the animal was not rabid).

• if the animal got away and cannot be found, then the person should immediately take the rabies vaccine series.

• if the series has already been started, and the animal is then found not to have rabies, the Pasteur treatments can be stopped.

• About 10%-12% of persons bitten by a known rabid animal, and not treated, will contract rabies and die. if the Pasteur series is started within 2 weeks or less after the bite, about one-third of 1% of those bitten will die.

• it is not widely known that rabies is sometimes transmitted accidentally in hospitals. Rabies in humans is sometimes misdiagnosed as a stroke. After death, some of that rabid tissue may be transplanted to another person.

• if your child’s pet hamster bites him, do not think the child needs to start rabies shots. Know that, if you have had that hamster for 3 weeks or more and it shows no symptoms of rabies, the hamster does not have rabies.

• Rabies shots last 10 days and are so difficult to take that the person often goes to the hospital for respiratory support while they are in progress.

SYMPTOMS IN THE DOG-Initially, there is a marked change in its disposition. He will become very friendly or very snappy; the bark becomes hoarse.

Paralysis may soon develop-first the lower jaw, then the hind legs, and gradually the rest of the body.

But, instead, the dog wants to run away. it may run for miles, snapping at any creature which comes near it.

Finally, it becomes exhausted and paralysis sets in.

If a dog shows signs of rabies, it must be chained (not roped), and observed for 2 weeks.

One of my close friends, on occasion, experiences twitches throughout certain parts of the day or at particular places (ex. church, some periods at school, etc), and her neck muscles will stiffen. What does she probably have, and is it serious?

it's nothing. it's just randome muscle spasms. everyone gets it.

Not to worry to much, it should be just some muscle spasms. however, if her condition worsens, do ask her to go for some physiotherapy

I have been following a mainly vegetarian dietary lifestyle for the past 4 months and have felt wonderful. for the past 2 weeks I have been very ill with fever, severe back pain (kidneys) and muscle spasms. the symptoms are on and off again every 2 to 3 days. CT scan is normal. WBC fluctuates. Could this be a deep level detox due to my dietary changes?

There are no symptoms shown. the kid got a tetanus shot 8 yrs before her cat bite, which was about 5 years ago. She also got a tetanus shot and other shots last year. Is she still at risk of a disease?

Cat bites are not known to be a likely source of tetanus infection at all. And since the child is up to date on her tetanus immunizations there should be no risk at all from any source.

you said she had a cat bite 5 years ago. That is way past the incubation period for tetanus anyway.

if this child is showing symptoms similar to tetanus, muscle spasms for example, whatever it is it has nothing to do with the cat bite but is certainly an indication she should see a physician right away.

A tetanus shot is good for 10 years, so I would say she probably doesn't have it. also, the incubation period for tetanus is 3-21 days, so if it's been 5 years and there are no symptoms…I'd say you're in the clear.

No her tetanus shots are up to date, but cat bites can be serious in other ways like infection. Go to your family doctor and explain all of this to him. he will know what to do.

Overall 25% to 50% of those individuals infected with tetanus die. If the symptoms occur quickly, it increases your chance of dying from this disease. the older population and the very young have the nost serious cases of this disease.

Because of widespread immunization with the tetanus vaccine, there are only 50 cases reported a year in the United States. this is a preventable disease!

Tetanus is rare but an often fatal disease that affects the central nervous system by causing painful muscular contractions. Tetanus bacteria enter the body usually through a wound or cut that has been exposed to contaminated soil. this is a disease that can be prevented simply by being vaccinated.

Tetanus produces convulsive muscle spasms and rigidity that can progress to respiratory paralysis ( cannot breath) and finally death. Tetanus is known as “lockjaw” because one of the most common symptoms of this disease is a stiff jaw. that will not open. In some rare cases tetanus affects only the part of the body where the infection begins, but most of the time it spreads to the entire body. the incubation period from the time of injury until the first symptoms appear has a wide range of two to fifty days. More commonly, symptoms occur within five to 10 days after injury. If the onset of symptoms occur early, the chance of dying increases. it is also important to know that tetanus is not contagious.

The first symptom of tetanus ( locked jaw) prevents an individual from opening their jaw or swallowing. this is known as trismus and results in a facial expression called a sardonic smile. Stiffnes of the neck and other muscle throughout the entire body and uncontrollable spams follow. These spasms are so strong that they can actually cause broken bones. the bacteria toxin affect nerve endings that cause a continous stimulation of the muscles.
