Something that might help me get better faster rather than just hide the symptoms?

It is very unsafe to self medicate – please consult a doctor.

Couple of non drug treatments that provide relief are as follows:

1] Irrigate the nose to loosen and remove mucus. this can be done by putting salt water solution in a Neti-pot or a regular tea pot and pouring this in the nose.

2] use a drug free nasal spray like Sinox nasal spray which will loosen and remove accumulated mucus. it will also act as a gentle disinfectant keeping the nose free from microorganisms.

Ever since moving to Florida 5 years ago, my allergies have gotten worse than ever, but lately, they've been almost unbearable. Store-brand Claritin takes forever to kick in. Is there another pill or a nasal spray that gives more instant relief, and is safe to take a few times a week?

I use benadryl. it works relatively quick and it lasts about 12 hours. It's over the counter and you don't need a prescription. also, if you prefer the general brand of benadryl, which is just labeled as allergy medication it works just as well and is cheaper. I take benadryl in the morning and within ten minutes I am good for the whole day.

Sinus allergies – its a real drag! it takes the medicines a while to take affect – at least it did for me. I take the generic – Loratadine – daily. I also have a prescribed nasal spray called Fluticasone Proprionate also once a day – 2 sprays per nostril. Both took about a wk to kick in. I use both daily & I breathe better. my doctor told me that my problem is connected to air pollution and my sensitive system. No hope but to move to an island.

its otc, and it works better than any antihistamine.

I give my son mangosteen juice, it seems to work fairly quick. and being a fruit juice there are no side effects.

What prescription nasal spray?

Some note that smells or tastes better than another, but they all work the same.

This group of drugs, including mometasone fluticasone propionate (Flonase), (Nasonex), budesonide (Rhinocort Aqua), flunisolide (Nasarel), triamcinolone (Nasacort AQ) and beclomethasone (Beconase AQ). Fluticasone furoate (Veramyst) is a new nasal steroid market, it also seems to be useful in the treatment of ocular allergies.Topical nasal antihistamines

Nasal ipratropium (Atrovent Nasal) works to dry up nasal secretions and is recommended for the treatment of allergic rhinitis, nonallergic rhinitis and symptoms of colds. It works very well to treatment of a nose drop, but will not treat nasal itching, symptoms of nasal congestion.

Side effects are generally mild and nose irritation and dryness.

Topical nasal mast cell stabilizers

Cromolyn (Nasalcrom) is a drug that can prevent nasal allergy symptoms when used before exposure to allergens. This drug prevents mast cells to release chemicals that cause allergy symptoms. the drug does not treat allergy symptoms once they have occurred, however. therefore, it has limited usefulness for most people.

NasalCrom is now also available over the counter without a prescription.
