WASHINGTON –  A 24-year-old American soldier died of rabies after being bitten by a dog last year in Afghanistan, US health officials said Thursday following an investigation into the rare case.

The otherwise healthy soldier started experiencing symptoms of shoulder and neck pain and tingling sensations in his hands soon after arriving at Fort Drum, N.Y., in mid-August 2011.

His condition escalated to include nausea, vomiting, anxiety and trouble swallowing. By the time he was admitted to an emergency room, he was dehydrated and hydrophobic, meaning he developed an intense fear of drinking liquids because of the painful muscle spasms he experienced while swallowing.

“He was lucid and described having received a dog bite on the right hand during January 2011 while deployed to Afghanistan,” said the report by the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

The soldier tested positive for a strain of rabies associated with dogs in Afghanistan and doctors attempted an experimental treatment to save him from certain death.

But within days, the patient was suffering from severe brain hemorrhaging and his family decided to take him off life support. He was the first US service member to die of rabies since 1974.

At the time of the bite, the soldier told family members and close friends that he had been bitten by a feral dog in Afghanistan and had sought medical treatment, “which he described as wound cleansing and injections,” the report said.

But an investigation by the US Army turned up no documentation of a reported bite wound or treatment, nor any record of a dog tested for rabies, according to the report.

The soldier’s case prompted a scare that he may have spread the disease other people and a CDC investigation tracked down about 190 individuals he interacted with while potentially infectious.

At least 22 of them received treatment as a preventive measure.

Rabies can spread through saliva, tears, spinal fluid or brain tissue that enters the body through a bite a broken skin. With the exception of transplantation, the CDC said “human-to-human rabies transmission has not been laboratory-documented.”

Every year around 20,000 women get ovarian cancer in the United States and yet many are not fully aware of the symptoms.

Morning sickness, flu like symptoms, fatigue, constipation and frequent urination… things like that. You can start morning sickness, fatigue and frequent urination within about 10 days of becoming pregnant.

Besides missing your period….sore breasts, nausea (may or may not have it), tingling feeling in the breasts, heightened sense of smell. They can begin as early as before a missed period, or shortly thereafter. it just depends on your body….everyone is different in that aspect.

Skipped periods are a likely knowledge of pregnancy, however morning sickness is also quite common with beening sick, headaches, bad belly and giddiness. Also leaking milk is a sign.

Breast tenderness, Fatigue, and Nausea are the 3 main ones. For me it was Nausea.

I don't know if symptom is the correct term, but if you stop having your period and get nauseous you could well be on your way.

At the very start as soon as u have a missed period, you feel very different– its hard to describe and everyone has their own :

PREGNANCY SYMPTOMS-

Swollen breasts-
Sore breasts caused by increasing levels of hormones. The soreness may feel more tender/swollen then how your breasts feel before your period.

Nausea/vomiting-
If you're like most women, you'll get "morning sickness" a month after conception, could start to feel queasy a lil earlier or not at all. I love how they call it "morning sickness" I had it off-and-on all day long, only for 3 months. The GOOD NEWS is, the more you feel nausea the better; your odds of a miscarriage decreases and that's well worth it! if the N/V doesn't getcha the sensitivity to odors may…it's normal to feel sick (even trigger gag reflexes) from different aromas, like bologna, bacon, coffee, onions or etc.

Fatigue-
Bouy, uou haven't felt tired 'til you get pregnant! Increased levels of progesterone and stress your body goes through as it changes will leave you feeling drained. You may start to feel more energy in the 2nd trimester, but you'll feel tired again in the 3rd trimester. (that's what happened to me anyways)

Frequent trips to the bathroom-
Soon after becoming pregnant, having to "go" all the time – a common symptom, because of the increased amount of blood and fluids, all processed in the kidneys and ending up in the bladder. This symptom may start as early as 6-7 weeks into your 1st trimester and continue through your pregnancy as more pressure is placed on your bladder due to your growing baby! so, stock up on the Charmin!

Implantation bleeding-
Some women have a lil bleeding about 11-12 days after conception. it may be caused by the fertilized egg burrowing into the lining of the uterus (a process that starts 6 days after fertilization) but no one knows for sure. The bleeding is light and only a couple days. (Let your OB/GYN know if you notice even a lil spotting, especially if you have pain, since this can be a sign of an ectopic pregnancy. You should see an OB/midwife at this point)

Food aversions/cravings-
Some women have cravings and some get what's called food aversions. You know what cravings are? Aversions are the opposite, where suddenly you find foods you once enjoyed, completely GROSS! This feeling may come and go throughout your pregnancy. have you ever heard of pica? Pica is a craving for ice, dirt, laundry soap, paint chips or other non-food items (may be an iron deficiency).

Constant high temperature (for 18 days)-
Not sure why…probably the increase of hormones, fluids, stress and other changes going on. I'd sweat when everyone else was cold.

A "late or missing" period-
If you're late make an appt to see an OB, if your not regular, then your first clues may be tender/swollen breasts, nausea and going to the bathroom more often…if your not sure take a pregnancy test.

Which leads to the last symptom…YOUR PROOF!

Most home pregnancy tests aren't sensitive enough to detect pregnancy until about 1 week after missing your period. Wait…if the test is positive, make an appointment with an OB/midwife right away, buy prenatal vitamins [you need 800mcg folic acid], start looking to buy maternity clothes and stretch mark cream/baby oil with vitamin E.

It seems as though the earliest pregnancy symptoms are breast tenderness, missed period and morning sickness. DH and I are trying to conceive as well so I am reading a lot of books and searching through informative websites, thus the source of my information. good luck.

These symptoms can point to ovarian cysts as well as the conditions we listed in the first paragraph. Women who have these symptoms are advised to go and see a doctor. if you have severe abdominal pain, back pain, or pelvic pain, or if you feel nauseous or vomit in combination with these symptoms, and especially if you have a fever too, don’t wait and head for the ER. immediate medical treatment may be needed.

Since the beginning of October, Boston has seen an increase in cases of gastrointestinal illness, including nine clusters at local schools, day-care centers, and a hospital, the Boston Public Health Commission said yesterday.

For the week ended Dec. 18, complaints of vomiting or diarrhea accounted for 2.9 percent of all emergency room visits in the city, compared with 2 percent for the same week in 2009.

The illnesses have been linked to norovirus, a common and easily spread viral infection that causes severe nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea. it usually resolves on its own in about two days, said Dr. Anita Barry, director of the infectious disease bureau at the health commission.

She said samples from two clusters that were tested by the federal government confirmed the presence of the virus. It’s often referred to as the “cruise ship’’ virus because it has been known to sicken seaborne tourists.

This time it is staying on land, though it is tough to say how many folks in this region have come down with the stomach bug. the health commission counts 2,251 people who were seen in Boston emergency departments from October through Dec. 18. An increase of 0.9 percent translates into 20 extra people going to a hospital over that period.

While you can get infected with norovirus by eating contaminated food, the virus typically is not the source of a single foodborne illness outbreak like the salmonella outbreak earlier this year in eggs, Barry said.

Norovirus often spreads from person to person because of poor hygiene such as not washing hands properly after going to the bathroom or changing an infant’s diaper.

You also can also remain contagious for up to three days after your symptoms disappear. “That’s why food handlers have to stay out of work for 72 hours after they’ve been sick,’’ Barry said.

People who come down with an intestinal bug, Barry said, should drink plenty of fluids to stay hydrated; take ibuprofen or acetaminophen to reduce any fever; wash their hands frequently to avoid infecting family members; and avoid food preparation while sick and for three days afterward.

If the illness doesn’t resolve after a few days or you start to feel dizzy or faint, call a doctor.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), in humans the symptoms of swine flu are similar to those of influenza and of influenza-like illness in general. Symptoms include fever, cough, sore throat, body aches, headache, chills and fatigue. The 2009 outbreak has shown an increased percentage of patients reporting diarrhea and vomiting.[20]

Because these symptoms are not specific to swine flu, a differential diagnosis of probable swine flu requires not only symptoms but also a high likelihood of swine flu due to the person's recent history. For example, during the 2009 swine flu outbreak in the United States, CDC advised physicians to "consider swine influenza infection in the differential diagnosis of patients with acute febrile respiratory illness who have either been in contact with persons with confirmed swine flu, or who were in one of the five U.S. states that have reported swine flu cases or in Mexico during the 7 days preceding their illness onset.

The symptoms of H1N1 flu in people are expected to be similar to that of the regular seasonal influenza.

Crosslake Community School officials closed the school Friday because of a stomach flu outbreak.

Terri Dabill, school administrative assistant, said the school board and staff decided Thursday to close school Friday because three staff members and more than 20 percent of students were out sick with stomach flu symptoms. School was closed Friday in an attempt to stop the spread of the illness.

Minnesota Department of Health officials told Crosslake School staff that the illness was likely caused by noroviruses, a group of viruses that cause the stomach flu or gastroenteritis. the term norovirus was recently approved as the official name for this group of viruses.

Symptoms usually include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea and some muscle cramping. sometimes people also have a low-grade fever, chills, headache, muscle aches and a general sense of tiredness. the illness often begins suddenly and the person may feel very sick. it is usually a brief illness, with symptoms lasting about one or two days. In general, children experience more vomiting than adults, according to the Department of Health.

Dabill said staff members spent Thursday after school thoroughly cleaning the classrooms, lockers and building with a bleach solution.

School resumed Monday and Dabill said attendance was normal. the school has 29 staff and 130 students in grades kindergarten through eighth grade.

“We did the right thing, no doubt about it,” said Dabill. “We’ve heard of it going around, definitely, and with our smaller count of students, something like that makes a big impact.”

No scorpions live in this part of the world, but ask anyone if they want to get stung by one and the answer will likely be a definitive no.

A former Kinston resident and medical researcher, however, is using the venom for a good cause.

East Carolina University researcher, microbiologist, and former Kinston resident Dr. Jim Fletcher is working on a project which aims to determine if scorpion venom might be used as a way to discover how pancreatitis occurs and what cellular processes are affected at the onset of the disease.

“we have expanded our capabilities a great deal in this study,” Fletcher said. “Through the research, we may be able to determine how to better treat and eventually prevent the disease.”

Pancreatitis is an inflammation of the pancreas. The pancreas, a gland located behind the stomach, releases insulin, glucagons and substances that help with digestion. Symptoms of pancreatitis include severe stomach pain radiating to the back, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, fever/chills, and possibly going into shock.

Scorpion stings are a known to cause a rapid onset of this disease, but they are not the only cause. Fletcher believed scorpion venom might be used as a way to discover how pancreatitis occurs by seeing which cellular processes are affected at the onset of the disease.

“there were publications years ago about the affects of people stung by scorpions, and 90 percent developed pancreatitis,” Fletcher said. “The study I was part of focused on using the venom from the scorpions to cause pancreatitis in experimental tissue, and we can learn what causes it and how it could be prevented.”

The sting can affect the pancreas by shutting down certain proteins the gland uses to create essential body chemicals. By determining which specific proteins the venom shuts down, Fletcher was able to get a better understanding of where pancreatitis comes from.

“We found that a particular enzyme in the scorpion’s venom removes a small protein,” Fletcher said. “If you remove a pancreatic cell’s ability to absorb or release components, you end up with pancreatitis.”

The study was published in the March 5 issue of the Journal of Biological Chemistry.

Fletcher grew up in Kinston, attended Grainger High School, went to Virginia Tech to earn his undergraduate degree, earned a masters degree from University of North Carolina at Greensboro and went to Vanderbilt for his Ph.D. he began this research at Rockefeller University in New York, continued at Yale, and is now furthering his research at ECU’s Brody School of Medicine.
