Could this be a way to reduce chlorine in our public water supply, and provide health benefits at the same time?

More important than anything above…does it kill the pathogens in drinking water and provide a residual that would persist throughout the distribution system? Sounds like you don't understand the water treatment process or even why it's done in the first place. certain pathogens occur in cysts, they have a protective shell around them that shields them from chemicals including lemon juice. and do you really think everyone is going to want to drink lemon flavoured water? Or bathe in it? and none of the health benefits will matter when people start getting sick.
So, no, we can't reduce chlorine usage in drinking water by using lemon juice.

This is an interesting question, not because herpes has been found to cause PD but because in vector-based gene therapy delivery systems, herpes simplex has been considered as a method to introduce genes into cells for PD treatment.

Please understand that these are inactivated viruses and won’t cause the disease but herpes was one virus considered because of its preference for colonizing nerve cells.

Most of the interest dates from the last decade of the previous century. because of the herpes involvement of the trigeminal nerve because there are viral pathways which affect the substantia nigra and have an affinity for monoamines (dopamine is a monoamine)

But that’s about it. so the answer appears to be no – herpes does not seem to be a causative factor in Parkinson’s disease.

From a NINDS article on PD, here is a section about the relation of viruses as a causative factor to parkinsonian conditions:“Viruses are another possible environmental trigger for PD. People who developed encephalopathy after a 1918 influenza epidemic were later stricken with severe, progressive Parkinson’s-like symptoms. A group of Taiwanese women developed similar symptoms after contracting herpes virus infections. in these women, the symptoms, which later disappeared, were linked to a temporary inflammation of the substantia nigra”

What was important about the above was the inflamatory process.

In an effort to develop therapeutic remedies for multiple sclerosis, scientists debate two possible interventional approaches – but they’re on opposite sides of the spectrum. Researchers at Wayne State University’s School of Medicine, however, have reached a definitive conclusion as to which approach is correct, putting an end to a long-disputed issue.

Harley Tse, Ph.D., associate professor of immunology and microbiology at WSU’s School of Medicine and resident of West Bloomfield, Mich., whose study was published in the January 2011 edition of the Journal of Neuroimmunology, found that targeting white blood cells of the immune system known as T cells is the effective approach to block the disease in an animal model of MS, experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis.

Normally, T cells are programmed to attack foreign substances in the body. However, sometimes these T cells attack an essential component of the central nervous system, the protective layer of nerve cells known as the myelin sheath. This causes the symptoms associated with MS, which include tremors, fatigue, memory loss and other problems.

The debate was centered on treatment of the most common form of the disease, the remitting-relapse form, in which attack episodes alternate with periods of remission. Roughly 85 percent of the 2.5 million sufferers of MS worldwide exhibit the remitting-relapse pattern. “Scientists have been trying to understand how and why the relapse cycles occur and to design therapy to delay disease relapses and hence prolong the remission period,” said Tse.

Scientists came up with two conflicting conjectures. some found that the T cells involved in each relapse were different and were directed against different myelin proteins. as such, these T cells are not suitable targets for therapy. Others, however, could not find support for this in their studies. “It was important to resolve this issue because the two models suggested totally different therapeutic approaches,” Tse said.

Studying the possibilities, Tse constructed a special mouse strain to tag the disease-causing T cells and observed that when these marked T cells were eliminated after a relapse, subsequent relapses did not occur.

“Elimination of marked donor T cells could be done after development of the second or the third relapse episodes and each time, no further relapses occurred,” said Tse. “This work is significant because for the first time we are able to definitively establish a cause-and-effect relationship linking the marked T cells to the development of relapses and show unambiguously that it was the same T cells that mediated relapsing cycles. “

“Targeting such disease-causing T cells in MS is definitely a valid therapeutic approach that should be pursued,” Tse added.

Frontotemporal dementia is caused by a breakdown of nerve cells in the frontal and temporal region of the brain (fronto-temporal lobe), which leads to, among other symptoms, a change in personality and behavior. The cause of some forms of frontotemporal dementia is a genetically determined reduction of a hormone-like growth factor, progranulin. Scientists around Dr. Anja Capell and Prof. Christian Haass have now shown that various drugs that are already on the market to treat malaria, angina pectoris or heart rhythm disturbances can increase the production of progranulin. accordingly, these drugs are good candidates for treatment of this specific form of frontotemporal dementia. The work will be published in the online edition of the scientific journal Journal of Neuroscience on February 2nd, 2011.

WASHINGTON (Reuters) – Researchers say they have developed a cream that might prevent herpes infection for as long as a week — a potentially big step in protecting women from the sexually transmitted infection.

The cream uses a new kind of therapy called RNA interference to turn off genes that the virus uses to invade cells, the researchers reported on Wednesday.

The cream, being developed by Massachusetts-based Alnylam Pharmaceuticals inc, protected mice from herpes simplex 2, the virus that causes genital herpes, Deborah Palliser of Harvard Medical School in Boston and Albert Einstein College of Medicine in New York and colleagues reported.

"a vaginal microbicide able to protect against HSV-2 transmission could contribute significantly to controlling sexually transmitted diseases," Palliser’s team wrote in the journal Cell Host & Microbe.

The World Health Organization estimates that 536 million people worldwide are infected with genital herpes, a painful and incurable virus which is highly infectious and can kill newborns.

Herpes viruses head straight to nerve cells, where they stay latent for the life of an animal or person, often causing periodic outbreaks.

Related viruses are herpes simplex 1, which causes cold sores, and varicella, which causes chicken pox and returns in middle or old age as herpes zoster to cause shingles.

Acyclovir and related drugs can suppress symptoms and are available as both creams or pills but have not been shown to prevent infection.

An estimated one in five Americans have genital herpes, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, while 100 million have HSV-1.

As a new route to making better drugs, several companies have locked onto technology using small, interfering RNAs or siRNAs. these are molecules that can silence microRNAs — tiny strands of RNA, or ribonucleic acid, that help turn genes into proteins.

The Alnylam drug targets a gene called nectin-1. Mice genetically engineered to lack this gene are less likely to be infected with HSV-2.

But the cream "silencing" nectin-1 took a day or so to become effective. Attacking a second gene called UL29, found in the virus itself, provided immediate protection, they wrote.

Using both provided about a week of protection, they said. they used a type of cholesterol to help carry the siRNAs and the resulting cream did not irritate the vaginas of the mice, they said.

"Topically applied siRNAs might be useful to treat and prevent reactivation and sexual transmission of clinically latent HSV-2 infection," they wrote.

More work is needed, they stressed, but the approach might work for other sexually transmitted infections — notably the AIDS virus.
