Alexa Posny, assistant secretary for special education and rehabilitative services for the U.S. Department of Education, said a label of dyslexia isn’t important to actually treating the disorder in the classroom.

“when we think of a child with a disability, we don’t need another category, and it’s not that I don’t believe dyslexia isn’t one of them,” she said. “to me, it’s irrelevant. if a child has a disability and needs support and services, we need to provide that.”

Melissa Edmonds, Stephen’s mom, knew long before he was diagnosed with dyslexia that something wasn’t right. Finding someone to put a name to the problem was another matter.

“we were all relieved when we knew what it was,” she said. “we felt like we could do something then.”

Edmonds didn’t just help her child cope with his dyslexia. She’s being trained in the Orton Gillingham method of learning, a method used by educators to help those with dyslexia.

“we were driving back and forth to (a specialist) in Decatur a few times a week,” Edmonds said. “I joke about having lost a car in all this, but we did because we put so many miles on one. how many parents can afford to do that, or would go to that kind of trouble? It’s not been easy.”

In schools, educators are taught to identify students who fall behind. when that happens, a problem-solving team steps in to initiate a more intensive, individualized approach to the student’s needs. if that fails to solve the issue, the student is then placed on an individual education plan to help overcome the problem.

Nowhere in all of this is the actual problem named.

Edmonds said that’s where the disconnect between educators and parents comes into play.

With her training in place, she has begun tutoring local students who have dyslexia.

“I’ve had parents come to me in tears and tell me that a teacher said there was no such thing as dyslexia,” she said. “when that happens, you know there’s a problem because the numbers are there. I’ve had teachers tell me they’ve not seen a dyslexic student in years. It’s not because there aren’t any; it’s because the teacher hasn’t identified any.”

While the education model has shifted the emphasis from categorizing learning disabilities to treating the group, Posny said stories such as Edmonds’ illustrate problems exist.

“Early on, we spent a lot of dollars providing assistance and how to do that effectively, and lately, a lot of time has been on response intervention,” she said. “It sounds like we may need to go back and look at diagnostics.”

Putting the focus back on how teachers are trained at the college and university level is one way to help alleviate the problem, said Mabry Whetstone, director for special education services for the Alabama State Department of Education.

“The core element that’s missing here is that dyslexia is primarily a general education issue, and it needs to be dealt with through general education,” he said. “There needs to be more opportunities for training general education teachers around dyslexia to help prevent dyslexia from ever becoming serious enough to qualify for being in special education.”

Vicky Hulsey, an associate professor of elementary education at the University of North Alabama, said

Jones estimates there are an average of three students in the system at any given time who have been independently identified and diagnosed with dyslexia. At that point, he said, a system is in place to help them succeed.

“But I see that number growing,” Jones said. “Like autism, dyslexia is a hot-button issue. As parents become more educated and as pediatricians make referrals to early intervention programs, we’re only going to see more and more students with this.”

Where the money will come from to help those students is unclear.

Ramsey founded Greengate in 2002 because, like Edmonds, her son struggled in the public school system. She recalls the nights he’d cry over his school work, unable to complete the assignments. After being trained in the Orton Gillingham method, Ramsey began working with her son as well as other children who were identified with the problem.

Now, 37 students come to Greengate for tutoring each week from as far away as Blountsville, near Birmingham, and even Mississippi.

At a cost of between $60 and $120 a week, she said it can be cost prohibitive for some families.

“we understand we’re not within everyone’s reach, and that distresses us,” Ramsey said. “But we also know this is the method that works and what makes people come to us.”

Since 2002, parents have had the benefit of receiving free testing for dyslexia from the Scottish Rite Association.

Jerry Vurfitt, the foundation president for the organization, said dyslexia is often pushed aside in public schools because it’s fraught with legal connotations.

“by law, once a student has been identified with dyslexia, schools are legally bound to deal with it, so they’re reluctant to stick their necks out,” he said. “They kind of say, ‘Okay. what do we do now? and we have no way to deal with it anyway.’ They admit, basically, that the car is on fire, but they don’t have a fire extinguisher.”

Because his testing service is free, parents often seek the help of the association. At Greengate, the cost is $425.

But experts agree that catching dyslexia on time

is critical, especially if the goal is to alleviate the symptoms.

Scottish Rite won’t test a child until after he reaches the age of 7 and has been through half of the first grade.

Hulsey said that’s too late.

“we know that, if a preschooler is having significant language delays and it’s not treated, it will (develop to) an almost full-blown learning disability by the third grade.”

Suzanne Nester saw the delays early on in her third child, Livi.

“She just wasn’t getting it, and she was struggling,” Nester said. “I knew something was wrong; I just didn’t know what.”

Nester contacted Greengate and got Livi tested. The test confirmed that Livi,

who was 6 at the time, had dyslexia.

“I was relieved at that point because we finally had an answer,” she said. “Now, I could do something about it.”

Nester contacted Edmonds, and now Livi receives an hour of tutoring at school during the same hour her classmates spend reading.

Nester and Edmonds have gone a step further and are in the process of organizing a nonprofit organization, Dyslexia Shoals, that will serve as a resource for parents who are struggling with their dyslexic children. The center is expected to be housed in St. Florian and offer tutoring later this year.

At the state level, changes also are in the works.

Vurfitt said he has worked with Whetstone at the state level in order to incorporate the Orton Gillingham method throughout the curriculum, and about 40 teachers statewide have been certified.

Still, the gaps persist, and despite the state’s offer to pay for teachers to undergo training, too few teachers have taken up on the offer, Whetstone said.

“We’d hoped to train as many as 400 this summer at the sessions, but less than 30 have signed up,” he said. “It’s intensive, but that just means we have to be willing to work with the teachers where they are — in the classroom.”

Smoking may increase the risk of multiple sclerosis in people who have other risk factors for the neurological disorder, researchers said on Wednesday.

The findings suggest that smokers who have high levels of a protein that protects against the Epstein-Barr virus, a common herpes virus, were twice as likely as nonsmokers to get multiple sclerosis (MS), the researchers wrote in the online edition of the journal Neurology.

Previous studies have suggested that smoking and the virus-fighting protein were independent risk factors and this research looked at how they may be associated with each other, Claire Simon of Harvard University said in a telephone interview.

"we found that that association was stronger in people who reported smoking compared with people who did not report smoking," Simon said.

The study found no association between smoking and a gene related to the immune system gene called HLA-DR15, which is thought to be another risk factor for MS, she said.

Studying the potential risk factors simultaneously might provide clues about why some people get MS and others do not, Simon said.

MS is an incurable condition that affects more than 1 million people worldwide. the disease can cause mild symptoms in some people and permanent disability in others. Symptoms may include numbness or weakness in one or more limbs, partial or complete loss of vision, tingling or pain, electric-shock sensation with certain head movements, tremors and an unsteady gait.

Simon and colleagues analyzed information from 442 people with MS and 865 without the disease. All were participants in either the U.S.-based Nurses’ Health Study, the Tasmanian MS Study and the Swedish MS Study.

The team determined whether participants had either of the potential factors and looked at the participants’ smoking history. the researchers said they found a consistent association between MS, smoking and the body’s immune response to the Epstein-Barr virus across the three distinct, geographic regions.

For those who are autistic, the anxiety can be overwhelming. while the holiday season can be a time of great joy for them, it can also be a time of great stress. Autism is a neurological disorder characterized by social impairments, communication difficulties and restricted, repetitive patterns of behavior, according to the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke. People with autism and those who care for them indicate that holiday activities can overwhelm the senses of people who can’t successfully filter out all the sounds, sights and smells bombarding them. Sonya a. Esber is executive director of Archway in Leicester, where 25 people with autism spectrum disorder live, go to school and work at day programs. she said the holidays are a time of increased activities. she said when parties that can feature Christmas music are held, those attending are given ample opportunity to go to their rooms if they are feeling overwhelmed. “we know what each individual’s different space is,” she said. “we have to plan things carefully.” Webster resident Cassy Gentile, 24, who works closely with her 27-year old brother, Richard Gentile of Worcester, said there have been Christmas seasons through the years when her brother has experienced tremendous anxiety. As he gets older, he is adapting more to the hectic happenings of the holiday season, she said. “He’s been doing pretty good. he usually doesn’t get too overwhelmed,” Ms. Gentile said recently. “The biggest thing that we have to watch out for is that he doesn’t overeat.” Ms. Gentile said her brother loves chicken and candy, and if he isn’t watched closely he could eat enough to make himself sick. Susan J. Loring, director of the Horace Mann Educational Association’s Autism Resource Center of Central Massachusetts in West Boylston, said younger autistic people, especially those who have profound symptoms of the disorder, can be affected more dramatically by the sensory overload of the holiday season. like Richard Gentile, some autistic people learn what to do to lessen their anxiety as they get older, she added. Mrs. Loring’s son, Eddie, is 26 and autistic, and even though he can’t tell people exactly what he is experiencing during the holiday season she knows it can be stressful for him. Through the years, efforts have been made to lower her son’s stress level. “The holiday season for my son is fairly enjoyable, “Mrs. Loring said. “We’ve scaled back the activities of the holiday season. we celebrate Christmas in a calm way.” One of Eddie’s favorite activities is looking at the Christmas lights and decorations. “Eddie likes the visual aspect of Christmas,” Mrs. Loring said. so does Jason T. White, 31, who lives on West Street in Southbridge, where he has his own apartment. “I like the decorations at Christmas. I like the pretty colors of the lights all lit up on the Christmas tree,” said Mr. White, who is autistic. “I like putting presents under the tree and I like hearing Christmas carols.” Mr. White works two days a week at Angel Guard Products on Goddard Drive, where he assembles items such as brushes people use to clear snow from their cars, and three days a week at Yankee Spirits in Sturbridge, where he is a custodian. “Jason is a really good, hard worker,” said Angel Guard Products owner Frederick P. Cormier. while he finds the holiday season exciting, Mr. White acknowledges he can get overwhelmed at times. when he does, ““I’ll go to my room and play Nintendo by myself,” he said. going outside and walking around is Timothy Heard’s strategy for dealing with the stress that come with the holidays. “I just walk away, that’s all. Elizabeth Keirns, 43, a file clerk for a Worcester accounting firm, lives on Addison Drive with her cat, Brent. she is autistic and is looking forward to a quiet Christmas. “he came to me during the Advent season,” Ms. Keirns said of the cat. “For me, the Christmas season actually isn’t that bad,” she said. “There are certain parts of Christmas that I enjoy, like the reason for Christmas is celebrating the birth of Jesus. OTTAWA — a year of attention on multiple sclerosis and a potential treatment for the degenerative disease has been good for patients, the MS Society and a patient advocate agree.

The controversial CCSVI procedure, also known as the liberation treatment, theoretically unblocks neck veins to ease symptoms.

Last year, Italian doctor Paolo Zamboni pioneered the procedure. The disease was always thought to be a neurological disorder, but Zamboni suggests some of the symptoms could be caused by blocked neck veins. The procedure inserts a stent or uses an angioplasty to unblock them.

A spokesman for the MS Society of Canada says it’s been good to have so much media and political attention focused on the disease.

“However it plays out in terms of whether CCSVI becomes a treatment for MS or not, we’ve at least studied it,” Stewart Wong said.

“Any efforts we make at furthering our understanding of any aspect of MS I think is a positive thing and hopefully will lead to an accelerated process of discovery.”

Rebecca Cooney, who runs the MS liberation support group in Ottawa, says she’s frustrated because angioplasty is an approved procedure for other medical problems. she doesn’t understand why it’s different for MS.

But the attention the issue has garnered has made for “an incredible year.”

“In terms of public support it’s been wonderful,” she said.

“What’s amazing to me is that it has stayed in the media so much. … every month there has been almost one major shift in the story.”

The liberation treatment isn’t approved in Canada, although several provinces and the MS Society are paying for observational studies to see if patients who have the procedure outside Canada show improvement.

Patients who have gone to other countries and paid for the treatment say they see immediate and noticeable results.

MS symptoms can include extreme fatigue, speech impairment and paralysis, but many say they have more energy and much less severe symptoms after having the procedure. They’re pushing for the federal government to approve it before it’s studied. for those facing a constant degeneration, an untested treatment doesn’t seem like much of a risk.

Doctors at the Canadian Institutes of Health Research said last summer there need to be preliminary studies before starting clinical trials. aside from the risks that come with any surgical procedure, there’s a chance of clotting, or the stent can travel through a patient’s veins and into the heart.

After one Canadian died in October of complications following the procedure, the MS Society said it wants the government to create registries for patients who have the procedure abroad, and to ensure doctors don’t deny followup care to Canadians who undergo CCSVI abroad.

The attention on the liberation treatment is likely to continue in 2011, with the MS Society having committed to report back on the seven studies they’re currently funding. Earlier this month, the government of Saskatchewan posted its request for proposals for $5 million it’s offering to run clinical studies on the procedure.

Cooney says MS sufferers made a lot of progress through 2010, but Canada is on the wrong track.

“Especially for people who have progressive forms (of MS), where there’s no other treatment, because there are no drugs approved for progressive MS, why can’t you try this?” she said.

“They don’t have any other choice.”
