For people with asthma and allergies, the Santa Ana winds are still a daily nuisance. the unusually strong winds kick up allergens, causing a host of miserable symptoms.

You might be feeling it in your nose, throat and eyes. Thanks to last week’s strong winds and the continuing Santa Anas, allergy doctors are reporting a boom of business. But you don’t have to continue suffering.

Once that wind blows we have several days afterwards that we’re dealing with people that suffer from allergies having persistent symptoms, because it does bring up a lot of mold, it brings up pollen and it brings up a lot of dust that irritates people’s symptoms, said Dr. Joseph Shapiro, Northridge Hospital Medical Center.

Those 90-mile-per-hour gusts kicked up buried soot and carried pollen and pollution from miles away.

Dr. Shapiro says allergy sufferers should continue to take cover.

Keep the windows closed,said Shapiro. You also want to keep your air purifiers going so you can filter out any of the allergens and irritants that get into the house. Make sure you change your filters on a regular basis.

But you’ve got to go out some time. so Dr. Shapiro recommends taking precautions before you head out.

These include antihistamines and nasal decongestants, as well some of these sinus-irrigation techniques that allow a person to clean out the irritants that build up inside their sinus cavities and nasal cavities, said Shapiro.

Your nose and throat aren’t the only things affected by the high winds. Doctors report many patients are complaining about dry skin and irritated eyes.

There’s some great over-the-counter eye drops and also, even better prescription eye drops, as well as saline eye drops that can be very effective with just washing out whatever irritants are getting in their eyes, said Shapiro.

Dr. Shapiro also recommends drinking plenty of water and keeping dry skin moisturized.

Dr. Shapiro says the change in barometric pressure can also trigger allergic symptoms.

If your symptoms persist, he recommends you see an allergist to create a long-term treatment plan, which may include regular medication and/or allergy shots.

The carpets on our floor is a perfect environment for gathering dust mites, pollen, mold dust, dirt and other common household allergens, not to mention food crumbs. When people go to the mat, the two things, move up solid pieces of the allergen causing them to become airborne and grind them into the fibers of the carpet. Airborne allergens are easily inhaled and can trigger an allergic reaction

The number one way for people with allergies to treat and control allergens in the carpet is to get rid of it. the reason this advice is that it is impossible to really clean carpet.

You can pay to have them professionally cleaned, rent a carpet cleaning machine and do it yourself, or you can buy one of hundreds of carpet cleaning products available that your local grocery store. the carpet can see cleaner but none of these choices really clean carpet.

You can think of it this way, suppose you took a heavy sweater or shirt (with lots of thick fibers) and threw it on the floor and went on for six months. it would become quite dirty, right? then suppose you splashed the dirty shirt / sweater with a little warm water and then vacuumed up the water with a wet vacuum extraction system.

Do you think that shirt would be clean? Of course not, and neither are your carpets after to make use of some of the many methods of carpet cleaning. this is why people with allergies or asthma are told to get rid of carpet.

Unfortunately it is not realistic for everyone to just get rid of their carpets. We lived with it in our house seven years before we could get rid of it and it made a huge difference. the alternative is to focus on allergens in the carpet and target their destruction.

Alkaline Laboratories makes a product specifically for allergy control carpet. X-Mite Anti-Allergen Carpet Cleaning Treatment Powder uses the power of the acids in the tannins to denature (or disable) the allergenic proteins of dust mites, pollen, mold and animal dander. is the tannin found in woods like oak, mahogany, redwood and other hardwoods. it is also found in tea. Alkaline Labs uses a patented process to convert this to a 3% tanacetane formulation which is very effectively denature proteins from animals, mold, pollen and dust mites.

They combine this allergy control denaturant to an aqueous solution of surfactant, so that they absorb some of the dirt contained in the carpet. the result is that with denatured proteins and thus made harmless and some of the dirt removed to make the carpets displayed cleaner.

To use X-Mite Anti-allergen carpet cleaning product for the treatment, you sprinkle damp powder on the carpet. Since there is a fine, dry powder that does not float in the air as the products of in with Johnson & Johnson a few years back. X-mite allergy control carpet comes out in “clumps” that must simply be brushed into the carpet with a broom. by sweeping them in the carpet also cause allergy control product that is further processed into fibers, which enables more efficient denaturation action.

After about 3 hours, the carpets are vacuumed to remove the powder and absorb dirt. there is no need to move furniture and process for furniture. each treatment lasts about 90 days, but it really depends on what’s happening in your home.

As always the manufacturer recommends that you test its products on a small hidden area of carpet before using it. the concern is that all previous chemicals or cleaning agents that you have used to interact with tannin and stain or discolor the carpet.
