When Sara Burelle got off her bicycle after completing Saturday’s opening trek of the Greater New Bern Bike MS, she had little or no feeling in her lower legs and feet.

It wasn’t from all the pedaling — 75 miles through the countryside. It’s because she has multiple sclerosis.

Still, she was one of many participants with MS who joined the nearly 2,400 riders in the annual two-day New Bern fundraiser to find an MS cure.

The numbness in her feet was one of the early signs that led to her diagnosis in 2009, along with severe pain in one eye, or optic neuritis. the eye problem has subsided with treatment. she noted that having optic neuritis is not always a case of MS.

however, she remains on Avonex doses for her disease.

“You feel like you have flu symptoms,” she said of the weekly dose, adding those side effects lessen over time and by being treated once a week.

She is a former life science teacher at the Epiphany School and she joined the Falcon Flyers team from the school, captained by Morgan Gerdes, which included a combination of students, teachers and parents.

Burelle was also joined by her husband Tim and daughter Kathleen, 14. her other daughter, Meg, 11, worked as one of the more than 600 volunteers at the Union Point event center. Riders must be at least age 12.

Burrelle and her husband previously rode in MS events many years ago, long before she was diagnosed.

At that time she rode to show support for MS victims and for the fun of riding.

She called it a “lifetime” disease and said most people are diagnosed between the ages of 20 and 50.

“I probably had it a lot longer and just didn’t know,” she said. “there is nothing to warn you ahead of time.”

For those who have their lives shaken by a diagnosis, her advice is to get treatment and remain upbeat.

“there are lots of things (medically) that people have and like we all say, ‘You’ve got to just keep on keeping on,’” she said. “You just have to deal with it.”

This year’s event, with a record number of riders is expected to produce another record — $1.7 million in funds raised by the individual riders and teams who came from more than 20 states.

“They do a fantastic job. They have the best ride,” Burelle said. “It is incredibly well organized — all the volunteers out here working, all the rest stops and support. the people out helping people having problems on the road are just awesome.”

I felt like passing out, flushed. I figured it was from not eating so I grabbed a burger and it seemed to alleviate the problems. Well, it happened again around the same time of day a few days later. But this time, eating didn't help as much. Eventually the symptoms went away. my colleagues observed that I looked very pale.
After his best season, Princeton running back Jordan Culbreath suddenly saw his life change in 2009.

Jordan said the symptoms he experienced were “fatigue, soreness, tingling, numbness in my legs.”

It was caused by a rare disease, Aplastic Amenia. So, two games into his junior season Jordan was told he would never play again, because one wrong hit could prove deadly.

“I wouldn’t have been able to stop bleeding in my head or anywhere else in my body if something bad happened,” Jordan explains.

After a year of treatment, Jordan’s improvement shocked everyone, and he returned to the field for his senior season.

“To play again is one of the greatest feelings I’ve ever had,” the recent Princeton graduate said. “It’s very gratifying to know I didn’t let this illness beat me.”

For his courage, Jordan was honored two weeks ago at the College Football Hall of Fame Gridiron Legends Luncheon series by Uplifting Athletes, an organization that helps fight rare diseases.

After the luncheon, Jordan visited Memorial Hospital with NFL quarterback Donovan McNabb. Jordan felt a connection with the kids there.

“I know smiles are tough when bad things happen like that,” Culbreath said. “To be able to help them out and inspire them like that so they can smile is just a great feeling.”

Princeton is just one university working with Uplifting Athletes. Northwestern is starting too.

Proceeds from Northwestern’s fundraisers go to the Ara Parseigian Foundation to fight Niemann Pick C disease.

“Just a great way for us to give back,” says Northwestern cornerback Ricky Wiena. “Brings our team together. We’re going to do a ‘Lift for Life.’ Working hard. Good way for us to connect while giving back.”

Northwestern’s Lift for Life event takes place July 22.

Jordan Culbreath’s amazing story is also told in a new documentary called Running Through.

Cervical radiculopathy is an inflammation of the nerve in the cervical spine from the exit point which is called neuroforamen. most neck pain does go away after several weeks but there are some neck pain that can persist and may radiate to the arms and shoulders. Cervical radiculopathy symptoms may include weakness, numbness or pain in various areas of the hand and arm. Common conditions that are generally linked to cervical radiculopathy include:

Cervical Spondylosis

This condition is the continuing tear and wears changes due to advance age. this is often referred to as degenerative spine disease. most of this condition can be identified through the traditional X-rays and other imaging examinations. Conditions like calcification of disc, narrowing of disc space, bulging of the shape of the disc and bone spurs can be clearly seen in this imaging device.

Cervical Disc Herniation

The disc is located in between the vertebrae. this disc consist of two layers that is the outer layer which is tough and the inner layer which is made up of a gel like material. an injury to the outer layer may change the shape of the disc especially if the inner material is pushed out to the outer layer. this condition is called disc herniation. When this injured disc compressed a nerve then it can result to pain.

Diagnosis of Cervical Radiculopathy

Evaluation and Diagnosis of Cervical Radiculopathy always starts with a physical examination by the doctor. With a thorough and careful physical examination the condition may be detected along of course with the symptoms of the patient.

Also traditional X-rays and MRI will show the bony spur formation in the nerve foramen. CT scans and MRI can show soft tissue structures like the nerves, discs which cannot be seen in X rays thus most conditions can be accurately diagnose or identified in this scans. most important thing is these findings will be associated with the patient’s symptoms. Unfortunately there is a finding that a high rate of spondylosis and disc herniation occurs in individual who never experience any symptoms at all (J Bone Joint Surg Am. 1991)

Non-Surgical Treatment

There are several studies that support for the non-surgical treatment of cervical radiculopathy. there are studies that showed that cervical radiculopathy improves without resorting to surgery at all. In fact two studies showed that cervical radiculopathy has significantly improved using non-invasive form of treatment after repeated of scans ( Spine Journal, 2003). other studies showed significant improvement of cervical radiculopathy treated with non-surgical therapies like using anti-inflammatory, epidural steroid injections, physical therapy, oral corticosteroids and brace ( Eur.Spine J 1996, Spine, 1996)

Fortunately most patients recover from cervical radiculopathy using the non-surgical form of treatment although there are instances that pain still continues despite the traditional treatment. if this is the case then surgical treatment may be recommended

A clinical study that has been recently conducted on Neprinol use to treat Multiple Sclerosis has produced some surprising results.

Multiple Sclerosis (MS) is a progressive disease that damages the nervous system and affects the spinal cord, brain and optic nerves.

Symptoms of MS include numbness, paralysis and possible blindness. MS symptoms occur and disappear, sometimes reoccurring months later and MS is classified as an autoimmune disease. Doctors are unsure as to why the body suddenly starts attacking itself, but it has something to do with genetic and environmental factors.

Neprinol contains several enzymes whose main job is to break down fibrin. Fibrin plays a role in blood clotting and the formation of scars in the body. Fibrin will accumulate on the damaged nerves of patients with MS after myelin breaks down.

Neprinol helps break down the fibrin in the blood which is shown to be beneficial in patients with MS. Many patients suffering with MS have seen significant responses when taking Neprinol and it has even helped to restore neurological function in some patients.

Lately, I’ve been experiencing a headache that I’ve never had before. The top
Of my head gets very cold to the point that I have to wear a hat most times to keep it warm.

Also, my feet tingle and the bottom portion of my legs tingle too and become numb. I have been to the doctors and been tested for diabetes which I do not have. I’ve also had an MRI and they don’t find anything (Thank God for that) but the fact remains they don’t seem to see anything.

I went to a kidney doctor because my creatinine level was up to 1.7. is has come down to 1.3 and I’m on blood pressure medication to help keep my pressure down. But the doctor said something that was interesting to me. he said that my kidney was operating 75% and it could be that it (kidney) was not getting the circulation it needed. I asked him could that be the cause of my headaches/ numbness and tingling in legs and feet? he said no but I disagree; I think they are somehow related.

I have since started drinking cayenne pepper and water to help with my circulation but can anyone give me other remedies that would be conducive to my problem because the doctors don’t seem to know (or care) what’s going on.

If you think all the doctors with great degrees can diagnose disease without the help of blood reports, x-ray, CT scan, MRI etc., the answer is simple no. it is the machines that diagnose a disease and not the doctor. They are only expert in supporting with medicines. They are only worried about fetching big money.

In my opinion, the blood supply to brain and to your leg is poor. start building up your immune system by eating lots of fruits, fruit juice and salad. Your cholesterol level may be little high. start taking 2 raw garlic flakes chopped in fine pieces and gulp them with one glass of hot water on empty stomach in the morning. Eat walnut and almonds. Apply almond oil on your scalp. in case of headache, try to sneeze so that the mucus deposit will flow down and you will find relief from the headache. if you have doubt about your kidney, press the centre point of your palm and if pain persists, it means there is some problem with the kidney. The numbness normally occurs when there is any problem in kidney. for numbness, press the last joint of your middle finger behind nail and you will feel pain. keep pressing intermittently for quick relief. You can rub almond oil on your sole. take 1 tablet vitamin B6 and B12 twice a day. I don't' know your location so I shall not be able to explain about Ayurvedic medicines.

contrary to what acupuncture man says, your blood supply to your brain in not inadequate. if circulation was so bad that your head was cold, you would be dead. and your body makes sure blood gets to your brain, blood flow to your brain is very constant unless there is major blockage in which case you would have a stroke, which you havent had.

im curious, what your blood pressure med is…. if it is a beta blocker (metoprolol (toporol), atenolol (tenormin), propranolol (inderal), Coreg (carvedilol), etc… there are many others, the generic name ends with -olol, the ones i listed are the common ones) the problems you are having could be a common side effect of this class of drugs.

if this is the problem and its really bothering you, talk to your doctor about switching to a different blood pressure drug; dont just stop taking it suddenly without first consulting your doc, theyll give you a taper schedule (quitting cold turkey can potentially cause dangerous heart rhythms)

i dont know about your kidney or the tingling in your legs and feet, could possibly be neuropathy or that could maybe be from poor circulation, but id think the doctors would be able to tell if your leg problems were from poor circulation or not. try exercising on a regular basis if you dont already, this could help you some. but im not a doctor, and its sounds like you have seen many of them and they couldnt help you, so i doubt i can….

Have you tried chiropractics? I'm not a chiropractor but have been a patient of chiropractics since an injury to my neck in a car accident couldn't be remedied by drugs or physical therapy. The pain was so bad I hadn't slept for three days and was in constant pain in my right arm. (like an abscessed tooth).
A chiropractor acquaintance of mine (who I thought was a quack) convinced me to get checked out by him. once he read the x-rays he performed a procedure on me that seemed so simple I couldn't believe it could possibly do any good.
I lost 95% of the pain in seconds. The other 5% went away in a couple of weeks with his chiropractic therapy.
I am a believer.

Since then I have pinched nerves in my spine on several occasions that cause pain and/or tingling in my limbs. I go to him for therapy on a semi regular basis and he makes it go away by straightening out my spine.

Remember, your entire nervous system runs through your spine and a pinched nerve can imitate all sorts of illnesses that drugs can't touch and physical therapy can take years to correct.

Check it out and good luck mate,
