Health bosses raise awareness of ovarian cancer symptoms

MARCH is ovarian cancer awareness month and hospital chiefs are keen to raise awareness of the symptoms to ensure early detection and treatment.

According to statistics, 17 women in the town will be diagnosed with ovarian cancer in 2012 but knowing the signs including persistent pelvic/stomach pain, increased stomach size, persistent bloating and having difficulty eating could help patients seek advice early.

Nigel Holland, gynaecological consultant at the trust, said: “If ovarian cancer is diagnosed at an early stage the outcome is good. “However, because some of the symptoms of ovarian cancer can be vague and similar to those of more common conditions, it can be difficult to diagnose.”

Women are also advised to tell their GP if there are two or more cases of ovarian or breast cancer in their close family.

My Brother told me today that my mum might have lung cancer but ive not said anything.. and he sed she was telling him and my dad because she is coughing up blood etc.. and he sed if she has it she might not have long to live.. my mum is everything to me… soo is there a cure or anything? im really worried :'( x

Got lung cancer 5 years ago, i had a lung resection ,which is just cutting out the infected part( 1/2 of one lung), i was in and out of hospital in 4 1/2 days, i was 45 at the time so not that young and then i had chemotherapy for 3 months and have been clear ever since. i started going out jogging and excercising and now my lungs are in better condition than when i was 30, i did smoke for 30 odd years but not since the surgery, so there is hope for your mum, make sure she does what the docs say, chemo is brutal but works,or it did for me so good luck and god bless

Back in January I had an abnormal Pap that was high risk and was referred on to have a colposcopy done. I just recently found out that the doctor that had done the colposcopy had stated in her note that she had almost been certain after doing the colposcopy that I had cervical cancer. then everything came back as negative and she just told me to follow up with a Pap every 6 months….should I get a second opinion? are there any symptoms of cervical cancer?

never feel that having a second opinion is an insult to your doctor.
You must read the info given on colposcopy.org.uk ..see the iodine results which has definite conclusions.

With cervical cancer it is possible to have no symptoms at all, which is why pap smears are so important.

If you are still concerned, have another test done. it is worth setting your mind at rest.

okay so i've already posted a question about this,

but my mind still isn't at ease.
and i'm still freaking out about it.
im sixteen, only had sex with one guy (almost a year ago), who had sex with only one girl.
i had already had one cervical cancer needle before i had sex with him
protected most of the time (unprotected for about 5 minutes)

i don't have any cervical cancer symptoms really other that,
sometimes burning and pain.
and tonight just got pain in my groin and legs and lower stomach after drinking.
i don't know if i'm just being paranoid or if i could actually have it.
i always worry about diseases. it's silly. but do you think i could have cervical cancer?

I really don't think you have, your too young! It takes between 10 and 20 years for a cervical cancer to develop after HPV infection so your carn't have it (cancerhelp.org.uk/type/cervic… I hope this puts your mind at rest.

Also I would recommend popping along to a local sexual health clinic and getting checked over as its far more likley that you will have contracted an STI if anything..

The early stages of cervical cancer may be completely asymptomatic. Vaginal bleeding, contact bleeding or (rarely) a vaginal mass may indicate the presence of malignancy. Also, moderate pain during sexual intercourse and vaginal discharge are symptoms of cervical cancer. in advanced disease, metastases may be present in the abdomen, lungs or elsewhere.
Symptoms of advanced cervical cancer may include: loss of appetite, weight loss, fatigue, pelvic pain, back pain, leg pain, single swollen leg, heavy bleeding from the vagina, leaking of urine or faeces from the vagina, and bone fractures.
Papanicolaou (Pap) test sometimes with the human papillomavirus test.
Yearly (or every 2 yr if the newer liquid-based test is used) in all women within 3 yr of first vaginal intercourse but no later than age 21.
After age 30, every 3 yr if ? 3 consecutive examinations are normal and risk is not high

Sounds like you just have a urine tract infection, does it burn or uncomfortable when you go to toilet.
I suggest you go to the dr but don't let them give you antibiotics straight away if he does say you have a UTI (urine tract infection), have a urine test first so they no what bacteria is causing it. they try and give it to you straight away but its not a good idea to go on the antibiotics until you know what bacteria it is, make sure you let the dr no you don't want to go on antibiotics till you know the bacteria causing the discomfort. It can take up to 3 days to get test results- if their is blood in your urine or its an orange, coco cola colour it means its a deep infection and you should get to the dr straight away,
If you do go on a dose of antibiotics make sure you take some pro-biotic with and after the antibiotics to build up the friendly bacteria again.

Alcohol will inflame and worsen the symptoms of a urine tract infection so in the mean time stop drinking and drink lots of water to help flush the kidneys out. have lots of fresh fruit and veggies and if you don't want to go to the drs it will most likely cure itself in a weeks time just take lots of probiotics as this will help your immune system.

As with the cervical cancer scare now that you are sexually active you must go and have a pap smear every 2 years- in most cases they prevent cervical cancer from occuring if you get them check ups.

I agree with Clare that you are too young to have cervical cancer as it takes at least 10 to 15yrs for cervical cancer to develop.

I had cervical cancer 3yrs ago & it was found because i had a pap smear (which i hadn't been having regularly enough for a very long time). I didn't have any symptoms & if it weren't for the pap smear i wouldn't have known. my cancer was successfully removed with surgery.

As for you i think you should go to your doctor for a check up & be totally honest with him/her about how you are feeling just in case you may have contracted an STD. Good luck!
