Residents of Acholi-bur Sub-county in Pader District are living in fear after one person died and two other suspected cases of Hepatitis E were reported in the area.

The deceased, Christine Anek Oloya of Ogago Parish, is said to have died after last week after showing signs and symptoms similar to that of the disease, which left scores dead in Kitgum and Pader districts last year.

Hepatitis E is a condition related to unhygienic environments and its earlier outbreak in the region in 2008 was associated to the unfriendly conditions in IDP camps.its symptoms are mild and last for a couple of weeks. they include fatigue, a sore throat, joint pain and excessive tiredness. Hepatitis is an inflammation of the liver, most commonly caused by a viral infection.

Although not chronic, the disease has no cure and the only action that can be taken is to relieve the symptoms through rehydration. If the patient survives the infection, the virus disappears and the liver recovers.

Although many people have left the IDP camps to return to their homes, many health needs are still unmet as latrine and clean water coverage is still minimal.according to the Sub-county chairperson, mr Charles Okot, his office has launched an awareness campaign for all residents in the Sub-county and nearing areas to observe maximum hygiene in their homes.

“Sanitation in the sub-county has drastically dropped. the community does not seem to care anymore, thus creating room for the disease to re-emerge,” mr Okot said.the in-charge Acholi-bur Health Centre III, mr Michael Owiny, said with the laxity in the area, the disease is bound to spread further.

“We diagnosed the deceased at this health centre but we have to wait and come out with detailed information to confirm the outbreak,” mr Owiny said.

The District Health Officer, Dr Jane Oola, however, said her office is not aware of the disease outbreak but pledged to send a team of health officials on ground to ascertain the reports.

The United Nations World Health Organization (WHO) has provided essential drugs to help treat an outbreak of dengue fever that has affected an estimated 1,000 people in the north-eastern Kenyan district of Mandera, which borders Ethiopia and Somalia.

There have been four unconfirmed deaths and some patients have been showing symptoms of Dengue Haemorrhagic Fever, a more severe form of the disease, the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), reported in an update.

All neighboring districts have been alerted and people advised to seek early medical attention if they become ill.

Meanwhile, anaemia prevalence among children under the age of five in the refugee camps in Kenya’s Dadaab area is above 40 percent, according to OCHA. the camps host nearly 470,000 refugees, the majority of them from Somalia.

Three of 6 suspected cases of cholera in the Dadaab camps have been confirmed and all the patients arrived recently from Somalia. Some 82 percent of the refugee population have received measles vaccination during a recent mass inoculation campaign.

An estimated 3.75 million people in Kenya have been experiencing food shortages a result of a prolonged drought in the Horn of Africa, and relief agencies are working with the Government to scale up distributions to the affected populations through one coordinated pipeline from October.

In August, the overall number of admissions to hospital of children with severe acute malnutrition declined from 6,379 to 5,560 cases, but an increase in admissions has been reported in the districts of Marsabit, Samburu, West Pokot and Laikipia.

Most HPV infections have no signs or symptoms. so someone can be infected and pass the disease on to another person without knowing. however, some people do get visible warts.

i know for hpv2 (genital herpes) usually when someone gets infected with it they have a really bad cold/fever and then bumps show up within a couple of days and if you get on medication they will be gone within 2-4 days

In most cases there are not any symptoms of HPV and the only way that you can tell is by having regular smear tests. in some cases they can cause genital warts.

I recently returned from two days with our cholera response team in the region of Petit Riviere in Artibonite. I was there to support our team and to collect information from the local population about existing water sources, their access to basic hygiene facilities such as showers and latrines, and their knowledge about cholera and cholera prevention. The first cases of cholera were reported in Artibonite in October and the region continues to be one of the worst hit by the outbreak. as such, it is a focus for Oxfam’s cholera response.

I visited rural communities and talked with people, some of whom proudly showed me their newly constructed family latrines. before Oxfam began its cholera response program, the majority of communities lacked toilet facilities.

In a number of locations, Oxfam has additionally set up ORS (oral rehydration solution) “corners“ ORS is the most effective way to keep people with cholera hydrated until the cholera-causing bacteria has passed through the body. Community volunteers, trained in treating water to ensure it is safe to drink, in hand-washing practices, and in ORS preparation, staff these sites. if community members suspect they have cholera, they can get instant assistance from the corner volunteer who supplies them with enough ORS and clean water to ensure they stay hydrated on their journey to hospital. Oxfam staffers carry out regular spot checks of these corners to ensure the quality of the treated water and that ORS is being prepared correctly.I was very happy to hear the corner volunteers report a decrease in the number of people presenting cholera symptoms in the past few weeks. It was also good to hear community members speaking repeatedly about the importance and benefit of having such ORS corners within easy reach of their homes as a means to help treat and prevent the spread of cholera.

Before the cholera outbreak, many community members were unaware of the symptoms of the disease, how it is transmitted or how to treat it. Since the outbreak, Oxfam has been working hard to educate people about these issues.

I attended two local meetings during which community members were encouraged to share what they had learned about cholera symptoms, ORS preparation, and how to handle the bodies of people who have died from cholera to prevent further spread of the disease. It was great to watch each and every person at the meeting stand up and with confidence l shout what they knew through a megaphone!

It was also reassuring to find the mystery and fear surrounding cholera– prevalent during the early weeks of the outbreak–dissipating. Oxfam’s health and hygiene messages are clearly getting through to increasing numbers of people who now have the knowledge, skills, and resources to effectively treat and manage cholera within their communities.

yes, herpes may heal now but it will come back again for some time.. lysine can help prevent the virus.. hope this helps

As the person above said^^^ yes the symptoms come and go. For most people usually every few months dependant on how long you have had the virus for. this does sound like herpes. The first time you have symptoms will be alot worse than any other outbreak you will have.

Once you have been exposed to the herpes virus through direct skin-to-skin contact, the infection is everlasting that makes it more distinct to other viral infection

Two to seven days is a rather large window, but most people tend to see symptoms within approximately five days. some people never catch it. some people will catch the virus, but will experience no symptoms. Often times, someone won’t experience symptoms for years after exposure. the virus can be passed to another individual whenever the virus is present on the skin surface. once we are exposed to genital herpes, the virus can live in our bodies for years without us even realizing it.

The outbreak of Vibro cholerae 01 Inaba has led to the hospitalization of 913 people since it was first reported on 23 February.At present, the outbreak’s spread is slowing: 11 new cases were recorded on 6 April and the fatality rate fell from 14.4 to 5.5 percent over the previous three weeks. in mid-March, 189 cases were recorded in a single week in the city’s Lubunga district.It is also confined to Kisangani’s five zones. Even though treatment is free, “some come to the health centre too late, when fatal dehydration is too advanced”, he added.
