Doctors fail to catch it in the early stages because the symptoms often mimic so many other conditions:

First, my mother's diabetes became nearly uncontrollable, but when insulin solved the problem the doctor stopped pursuing the cause, aside from telling her to "eat less sugar."

Second, she had had a back injury many years ago, but her doctor again chalked up the intense low back pain to osteoarthritis and prescribed a stronger painkiller.

When she came to him with stomach issues, and tests were inconclusive, he called her a hypochondriac.

Only when she had lost half her body weight, became jaundiced and was unable to keep food down did the doctor send her for tests. and of course by then it was too late to treat it effectively.

Two major risk factors are Type 2 diabetes and smoking, and my mom did have both.

My advice is to not smoke, eat healthy, exercise, and most importantly; KNOW YOUR BODY. your body is more than capable of telling you something is wrong, and you should listen.

Also, question your doctors: never let them make you feel stupid or inferior just because they have an MD in their name. they are not all-knowing gods, though they seem to think otherwise.

Elizabeth Taylor’s publicist says the actress is being treated at a Los Angeles hospital after exhibiting symptoms of congestive heart failure.

ADVERTISEMENT the 78-year-old star of “Giant,” “National Velvet,” “Cat on a Hot Tin Roof” and “Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?” was admitted this week to Cedars-Sinai Medical Center after falling ill, Taylor’s publicist, Sally Morrison, said in a statement issued to ABC News Friday.

“Her family and close friends are appreciative of the warm support and interest of her loyal fans but have asked that people respect her privacy and allow her medical team the time and space to focus on restoring her back to health,” Morrison said in the statement.

ABC News did not report any other details about her treatment or condition.

The two-time Oscar winner who has been married eight times — twice to actor Richard Burton — has battled numerous health issues over the years and is rarely seen at public events.

In addition to sustaining injuries when she fell off a horse early in her career, ABC News noted she also sought treatment for alcohol and painkiller addictions, and underwent lung, hip, brain and heart surgeries.

Q. I take aspirin for arthritis pain. It’s the only painkiller that works for me, but sometimes if I have a headache, the aspirin doesn’t seem to work.

a fellow worker suggested that I eat a chocolate candy bar when that happens. Though I was skeptical, I tried one. the combination worked, and it has ever since. What’s in chocolate that helps? It’s great that something so delicious is a painkiller!

A. many over-the-counter headache remedies contain caffeine along with aspirin and acetaminophen. This combination can be quite effective for migraines (Headache, March 2006).

Although chocolate does not have much caffeine, it does contain a similar compound called theobromine. Perhaps the theobromine is working together with aspirin to ease your headache pain.

we should note that some people with migraines report that chocolate triggers their headaches, so this delightful remedy may not work for everyone.

Q. Do you know of any home remedies for help in relieving symptoms of eczema? when humidity is low, my skin condition is aggravated something awful. it gets dry, itchy, red and ugly where it cracks and peels.

A. This time of year is exceptionally rough on skin conditions such as eczema or dry skin. there are many remedies that may work together to ease symptoms.

one reader had success by putting Pepto-Bismol on the itchy patches. Others report that old-fashioned Noxzema skin cream can ease symptoms. another moisturizer, CeraVe, also has supporters.

A. Bitters have been used for hundreds of years to improve appetite or relieve indigestion. they contain an extract of herbs and barks. Bartenders use a few drops of bitters in certain mixed drinks such as Bloody Mary, Manhattan, mojito or Old-Fashioned.

Q. I want to let you know about something that stunned me. I have suffered from restless leg syndrome (RLS) for nearly 35 years. a friend casually mentioned that pie cherries had helped her leg pain and thought maybe they would help my RLS.

I was skeptical, since I have tried many treatments, including medications. I had been on Mirapex for years and recently had to increase the dose. nevertheless, RLS was troubling me day and night.

I started eating pie cherries (about two dozen with their juice) each day. I have not had RLS for two weeks since I began.
