Q my husband has been having a problem for at least a year with having to get up several times at night. then he had a burning sensation when he went to the bathroom.

He started taking a product called Super Beta Prostate. he went to a urologist, who gave him antibiotics and said he was retaining a day’s urine in his bladder.

Is there anything he can do, take or eat to help with the retention? the urologist said he could wear a catheter, but my husband is 83 years old and will not do this.

A my guess is that your husband suffers from prostatitis, the swelling and inflammation of the prostate gland. This walnut-sized gland is located directly below the bladder in men.

Diagnosis might begin with a digital rectal exam so a physician can determine if the gland is enlarged or inflamed, blood and urine testing, cystoscopy or urodynamic testing.

If a cystoscopy is performed, a urologist then inserts a camera into the bladder to rule out other possible causes for symptoms.

Urodynamic tests can determine how easily a man can empty his bladder when he feels the urge to relieve himself and allow his urologist to make an appropriate decision regarding the next step.

Treatment might include an antibiotic to fight any bacterial infection, over-the-counter pain relievers such as aspirin or ibuprofen, or through the assistance of a group of drugs known as alpha blockers that should reduce his symptoms.

Moving forward on the home front, he might soak in a bath with about 2 inches of warm water, sit on a pillow to lessen any pressure placed on the prostate, try acupuncture, or eliminate excessive alcohol and spicy foods.

If need be, have him request a second opinion through another urologist who might have a different point of view.

The Super Beta Prostate to which you refer is an herbal remedy for the treatment of an enlarged prostate. the key ingredient in this remedy is beta-sitosterol, a white plant sterol found in almost all plants, rice bran, wheat germ, soybeans and corn oils.

I have not had any experience with Super Beta Prostate, nor have I ever recommended it, but am led to believe it is not as effective as one might hope.

Perhaps you might save your money, see a top-notch urologist and put the money toward an effective treatment deemed appropriate for his condition.

Those are just the basics. if you are really concerned go to the doctor. Becasue if it is a cysts, when it burst the pain will increase 100X. Not kidding.

I recently took 10 days worth of antibiotics for a urinary problem I am having. I did not see any change in my symptoms through the course of antibiotics. I am wondering if I have prostatitis. If I do have prostatitis would I see any change my symptoms through the first 10 days of antibiotics? I know the treatment for prostatitis is 6 to 12 weeks.

I went to several GPs over a period of several years for what turned out to be prostatitis. They gave me antibiotics, but nothing seemed to help. then I went to a urologist who took x-rays. Seeing that several courses of antibiotics had not touched the problem, he had to go in there with a rod and stir things up a bit. It didn't hurt when he did it as he did a local anesthetic, but he told me to sit down to pee for several days, else I would probably fall down from the pain. that procedure and more antibiotics did the trick and I am pain free for many years and
never had the problem again. I am not saying you will need anything like this, but my advice is to go see a urologist if your GP hasn't been able to help you.

A unicameral bone cyst or a simple bone cyst is a disease usually found in children or persons who are less than twenty years old. this condition leads to the formation of a bone cavity which contains a straw color liquid. this condition is usually asymptomatic in many children and also a non-cancerous one. it is not exactly known, what causes this disease.

Unicameral Bone Cyst: this non-cancerous cyst usually develops either in the thigh bone or the upper arm. although unlikely, the ankle, pelvis and heel may also have the presence of these cysts.

Exact causes of the disease are still unknown, but it is possible that the epiphyseal plate which contains hyaline cartilage (acts as a lubricant between joints) and is present in the long bones (like the arm and thigh) in the body may possess a growth defect. although, this is just a theory and not conclusive.

Symptoms: as mentioned above, these cysts are usually asymptomatic. these cysts are lesions when closer to this epiphyseal plate are called active cysts and as their distance from the plate increases, they are called latent cysts.

• These cysts have to treated immediately if they begin to weaken the adjacent bones. Thinning of the bones can render them vulnerable to fractures and micro fractures.
• Micro fractures can cause immense pain and swelling in the region containing the cyst along with a deformity.
• Also, weakened bones begin to pain upon trying to perform any weight bearing activities.

Diagnosis: Children between the ages 5-15 are known to be the ones most vulnerable to the development of this cyst. on an average, a child can develop this cyst during his/her 9th year.

Imaging techniques like X-rays, MRI and tomography easily spot the cavity in the bones.

Treatment: Since the cyst goes asymptomatic usually, the progress of the cyst is usually monitored from time to time by doctors. But once the unicameral bone cyst starts growing big and thin the bone leaving it vulnerable to fracture, a doctor would drain the cyst and inject steroids until the pain recedes and the healing starts.

Sometimes, even a surgery or internal fixation techniques are also suggested for healing the cysts.

NEW YORK (Reuters Health) – In some teenage girls, very painful menstrual periods that interfere with daily life may signal an increased risk of developing the most extensive form of endometriosis, a preliminary study suggests.

In a study of 229 women undergoing surgery for endometriosis, French researchers found that those with the most extensive form — known as deep infiltrating endometriosis (DIE) — were more likely to have had particularly painful periods as teenagers.

As a group, they were four times as likely as women with non-DIE endometriosis to have used birth control pills to treat severe menstrual pain before the age of 18. And they were 70 percent more likely to say they'd missed school days because of menstrual symptoms.

The findings, published in the journal Fertility and Sterility, suggest that such problems in adolescence can sometimes predict a later diagnosis of DIE.

In endometriosis, pieces of the tissue that lines the uterus (the endometrium) also grow outside the organ — often on the ovaries, the fallopian tubes or elsewhere in the pelvis. like the endometrium, this misplaced tissue changes with each menstrual cycle, thickening and then breaking down and bleeding.

This leads to a buildup of adhesions, or scar tissue, outside the uterus, with symptoms including pelvic pain and heavy, painful menstrual periods. Some women also have difficulty becoming pregnant.

There are three forms of endometriosis: superficial endometriosis, ovarian endometriomas and DIE, with the latter being the most extensive. Women with DIE usually have adhesions in multiple areas of the pelvis, including the vagina, bladder, bowel and the ligaments attaching the uterus to the pelvis.

Endometriosis can be tricky to diagnose, and many girls and women go years before a diagnosis.

The condition may, for instance, be mistaken for other causes of pelvic pain, like ovarian cysts, pelvic inflammatory disease or, depending on the symptoms, irritable bowel syndrome. In addition, while a pelvic exam or ultrasound test are often used to help diagnose endometriosis, the only way to definitively diagnose it is through minimally invasive laparoscopic surgery to take a tissue sample.

Compared with the other forms of endometriosis, DIE appears to have a longer delay to diagnosis.

So for the new study, Dr. Charles Chapron and colleagues at Universite Paris Descartes tried to find out whether women undergoing surgery for endometriosis had any early symptom history that was associated with a greater likelihood of having

The study included 229 women who had surgery at a single medical center between 2004 and 2009; 43 percent had DIE, while the rest had the less-extensive forms of endometriosis. all of the women were interviewed about their symptom history; their average age at the time of surgery was 32.

Overall, 58 percent of women with DIE had ever been prescribed birth control pills to treat severe menstrual pain, versus 26 percent of women with non-DIE forms. Similarly, 21 percent of women with DIE had their first prescription before the age of 18, compared with 6 percent of those in the non-DIE group.

When it came to missed school days, 38 percent of DIE patients said they'd had absences due to menstrual symptoms, versus one-quarter of women in the non-DIE group.

Women with DIE were also more likely to report a family history of endometriosis; 13 percent did, compared with just under 5 percent of women with non-DIE endometriosis.

The study has a number of limitations, including the fact that it surveyed women at one time point and asked them to recall symptoms from adolescence. a study that followed young women over time to see whether symptoms predicted a later diagnosis of DIE would be more informative.

These findings now set the groundwork for such a long-term study, Chapron told Reuters Health in an email.

but the "crux of the issue," he noted, is whether diagnosing endometriosis earlier will eventually lead to fewer cases of DIE and less need for surgery.

"Today, there is no effective way to prevent the progression of endometriosis to its most severe stage, DIE," Chapron said.

And the current results, he noted, suggest that treating severe menstrual pain with birth control pills does not prevent progression to DIE, as a history of such treatment was linked to the condition. Chapron also pointed out, however, that this does not mean that birth control pills contributed to the development of DIE either.

Still, even though it is not clear whether progression to DIE can be prevented, an earlier diagnosis of endometriosis would at least allow girls and women to know the cause of their symptoms.

according to Chapron and his colleagues, girls and women with severe menstrual pain that does not respond to pain relievers like ibuprofen should see their doctors, and, if appropriate, be evaluated for endometriosis.

Besides painkillers and birth control pills, non-surgical treatments for endometriosis include several types of hormonal medications that inhibit the growth of the endometrial tissue.
