Neurofibromatosis is the name for a disorder that affects the skin and nervous system. this disorder is divided into two groups: Neurofibromatosis Type 1 (NF-1, also known as von Recklinghausen’s disease) and Neurofibromatosis Type 2 (NF-2). Type 1 is the most common. this disorder is occurs in approximately 1 in 40,000 people. some experts suspect that it is an inherited disorder which can affect both males and females alike. Mutations of the affected gene can cause the disorder even when no one else in the family has it. only one copy of the affected gene needs to be passed on in order for it to develop. The child of an affected parent has a 50% chance of developing this condition. To diagnose this disease the medical doctor will take a family medical history and do a physical exam. Testing will be done on hearing as well as an EEG. X-rays of the bones and a CT scan or MRI scan of the head may also be done. Neurofibromatosis symptoms usually show up by the age of 10.

Neurofibromatosis symptoms for Type 1 are usually limited to the skin and eyes, nervous system and may present joint and bone manifestations. The common symptoms include markings on the skin called Café au lait (“coffee with milk”). it is common to find 5 or more of these tan patches on the skin. These spots usually develop within the first few years of life. They are commonly found on the scalp, palms of the hands and soles of the feet but they can also occur on other parts of the body. during puberty the spots multiply and darken when exposed to the sun. Such spots can look like freckles only they appear where the sun does not reach, like the arm pits or groin. this freckling is not dangerous but may cause the skin to itch.

Lisch nodules, pigmented bumps found within the iris of the eyes, are associated with Type 1 Neurofibromatosis. The lisch nodules usually do not cause vision problems for most people and usually do not occur until late childhood. These nodules are one of the major signs of neurofibromatosis. The skin can also develop small, rubbery skin lesions called neurofibromas. These tumors consist of an intense co-mingling of nerve cells and fibrous tissue. Bone defects and visual disorders may also be symptoms of this disease. Type 1 can also be complicated by masses on the brain or spinal column.

Neurofiromatosis Type 2 is the rarer form of this disease and is diagnosed in only about 10% of the cases. Symptoms of Neurofibromatosis Type 2 include bilateral acoustic neuromas. These neuromas are tumors on the eight cranial nerves in the brain. Hearing loss, headache, facial weakness and loss of balance are all symptoms of Type 2. Other symptoms can include brain tumors and abnormalities in the eye lenses. Café-au-lait spots are not as common in Type 2 Neurofibromatosis. Skin tumors are not as common in this type either but may also be present. People who are diagnosed with Nerurofibromotosis Type 1 have a better prognosis then those who are diagnosed with Type 2.

There are no treatments for Neurofibromatosis symptoms other than removal of the tumors if they are causing vision loss or other complications. The neurofibromas are small pea-sized nodules that develop along the nerves in the body. They are slow growing and not cancerous. some people with this condition can be afflicted all over their body with these tumors. others may only have a few. People who are diagnosed with this condition are given genetic counseling and made known of their chances for passing this condition to their offspring.

How is a DX of cancer found? how would you know if
you have some sort of cancer? Worried about myself and hubby, whom both have cancer history in family.

The problem with cancer is that it if there are symptoms such as a visible tumor or pain, you are probably too late for a cure.

Doctors sometimes do an early detection cancer screening with an annual physical exam, but on the most common cancer such as breast for women or prostate for men. this assumes that you faithfully call every year for your annual physical exam. Unless you tell the doctor which cancers run in your family, you will not get screened for those cancers. You need to ask your doctor to screen you regularly for all the cancers that run in your family.

There are early detection tests for all major cancers except pancreatic cancer. Early detection makes most cancers treatable and/or curable. a common example is Prostate Cancer. a rapidly rising PSA (blood test), taken every 6 months if you have a family history of this cancer, will detect this cancer in most cases. this must be followed by other tests to confirm a positive diagnostic.

It depends on the type of cancer. if you have breast cancer then do self exams monthly and don't forget to run down your side and up in your pit. if your hubby is in the age range of 15-25 he needs to examine his testicles for lumps to check for testicular cancer, he should continue these exams past the age of 25, but most testicular cancer hits men within this age group. if there is colon cancer or colorectal cancer then colonoscopy should be performed at a younger age and on a regular basis if their is a family history. Ovarian Cancer should be taken seriously if someone has a family history of it.
Other signs of cancer are unintentional weight loss, fatigue, persistent cough, NEW symptoms of indigestion, gas, and abdominal bloating that is persistent for more than 2-3 weeks, anemia, lumps under the skin, petchiae, easy seity, vaginal discharge, bloody mucus, anal bleeding, coughing up blood, night sweats, high fever, persistent low grade fever, swollen lymph glands, and there are many more signs of cancer, like moles and skin distubances, it all depends on the cancer…. but most cancer is not symptomatic until the cancer has progressed to a latent stage.
So, precancer screenings are available for cervical and prostate cancer and if their is family histories these tests should be addressed with your physician to see when you should start screening. be aware of the onset of any symptoms that are new or persistent. be proactive with your health. but do not worry so much that you end up creating cancer for yourself. Other preventative measures are to keep stress levels at a minimum, and eat well, stay away from high fat foods and integrate a high fiber diet into your lives as well as exercise.
And by all means do self exams and pre screening for cancer.

Sometimes you will experience symptoms such as trouble urinating or pain on urination. Though symtoms do not always appear until it's too late and you already have cancer, it's very important to have your prostate checked once a year. Any type of cancer can spread to other organs in your body. if you are concerned and do have some symptoms, see your doctor early on. an early diagnosis is the best way to keep cancer in check.

There ARE symptoms but in the early stages the ONLY one worth noting is to be found by physical examination (the rectal digital exam). Other symptoms are to be found in the sampling of the blood for antigens (known as a PSA test) although a negative on this test is not definitive that there is NO cancer.

The best method is to have physical exam every year and a PSA test at that time.

Once any visible manistation of the disease is determined, (usually severe pain in some joint or body area) it is usually too late to do much for it as the cancer has matasticized into the blood stream and settled into other major organs, bones, etc.

Many times there are no prostate cancer symptoms, therefore all men need a PSA exam.

SUMMIT — Experts at the Movement Disorders Program at Atlantic Neuroscience Institute at Overlook Hospital would like to find out if a medication used to help patients with Parkinson’s disease also has any effects on the symptoms of restless legs syndrome.

Restless legs syndrome is a neurological disorder recognized by unpleasant sensations in the legs and the uncontrollable urge to move the legs when resting. As a result, those affected with this syndrome report having trouble falling asleep or staying asleep, leading to severe exhaustion and daytime fatigue. The disorder affects as many as 12 million Americans, and is often misdiagnosed or overlooked since it can resemble common conditions such as anxiety, insomnia, stress or aging.

A recently-launched study at the Neuroscience Institute will seek to determine whether the medication rasagiline, which is currently used to treat symptoms of Parkinson’s disease, is useful in treating restless legs syndrome, because of its ability to increase the level of the chemical dopamine, in the brain.

The study is open to adults, 18 years old and older, who have been diagnosed with restless legs syndrome. The study will include completing a physical exam and questionnaires and taking study drug, an oral medication, for 12 weeks. Participants will need to make four study visits, with each visit lasting about one hour, and a brief follow-up phone call two weeks after completing the drug regimen.

The study is sponsored by Tiffini Voss, MD, of the department of neurology at the University of Virginia, who is the principal investigator of the overall study, through a grant from Teva Pharmaceuticals. At Overlook Hospital, Roger Kurlan, MD, medical director of the Movement Disorders Program, is the principal investigator.

Paula, 35, recently came into my office complaining of pain in her vagina and pelvis.

She had been experiencing chronic discomfort with sensations of stinging, itching, irritation and rawness for many months.

Some women also experience burning pain across the pubic bone, shooting pain through the buttocks or thighs and stabbing pain in the vagina.

Paula decided to try a naturopathic approach when a friend of hers also received benefit for a similar condition.

This condition is called Vulvodynia or Vulvar Vestibulitis Syndrome depending on the specific location of the pain. there is much emotional distress that accompanies this condition not only because conventional medicine may have little help to offer, but also a women’s sexual life declines due to pain.

It may have a sudden onset after a vaginal yeast infection, after medical procedures to the vulva or changes in sexual activity. in most cases the vulvar pain becomes chronic, lasting for months to years.

I started with a general assessment including a physical exam including blood work, EAV (Electroacupuncture) testing for underlying organ weaknesses, an evaluation of her diet, stress, exercise and hydration and an evaluation of her food sensitivities.

The biggest underlying culprit is candida or yeast overgrowth in the body though there are few studies to confirm this. Another possible cause is an autoimmunity factor. However, treating the candida works clinically in most cases.

Candida or yeast overgrowth affects over 50 percent of the patients I see to some degree or other. This results in a dysbiosis or mix of unhealthy bacteria in the gut flora that affects the the reproductive organs of both men and women. (In men it can cause “jock itch” and chronic prostatitis)

This dysbiosis can generate foreign substances and toxins in the gut that penetrate the lining of the intestines creating a “leaky gut syndrome.”

When these foreign substances enter the blood stream the body sets up an immune reaction to them resulting in a number of possible symptoms: diarrhea, heartburn, reflux, bloating, fatigue, hives and in this case vulvadynia.

In vulvadynia often fungal cultures are negative and it is theorized that the pain may be caused by hypersensitivity to the candida fungas.

Paula wanted to know what causes the overgrowth of candida in the body? well, she had taken many antibiotics in her life for various infections and she had used the birth control pill for many years as well. She was never breast fed as a baby so her intestinal tract did not get a good inoculation of the proper bacteria at a young age.

She also had a terrible craving for sweets. on the EAV machine she tested a 10/10 for candida overgrowth and I got her started on a three-month candida program right away.

I suggested she come in for a free candida retest on a monthly basis to assess her progress. some need to be on the program longer.

Once Paula had improved, the trick was to maintain her gut flora and immune system so the candida would not have a chance to re-colonize.

I educated her on other treatments for her frequent infections so she could avoid the antibiotics as much as possible, and we discussed alternate birth control methods.
