According to the Parkinson’s Disease Foundation, nearly one million Americans are living with Parkinson’s disease.

Legendary boxing champion Muhammad Ali is one of those million.  Rasheda Ali, one of his daughters, spoke with Dr. Manny Alvarez, senior managing health editor for FoxNews.com, about her father’s struggles and her work to find a cure through stem cells.

Muhammad Ali was diagnosed in 1984, but Rasheda said she noticed early signs of the disease in a tape of one of his last fights in 1981.  She said the early years of his diagnosis were particularly trying for her and her family.

“It’s really nice that now we have so many resources and materials and information,” Rasheda said.  “But back in the ‘80s, we had nothing.  We were literally embarking on this tragedy, because we didn’t know what we were going into.  It was hard for us.”

Because Parkinson’s is a progressive disease, Rasheda witnessed her dad slowly deteriorate over the years, all the while not really understanding what was happening to him.  But after years of struggle, Rasheda said her father is currently doing great and is now focusing intently on his lifestyle.

“He takes care of himself, even now,” Rasheda said.  “Physical therapy is very important for people who have neurocognitive disorders.  He’s in the gym regularly.”

In an attempt to help find a cure for her father, Rasheda has collaborated with a biotech company called “BrainStorm Cell Therapeutics,” which has been experimenting with stem cell treatment on patients with Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) – also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease.  Through their efforts, many of these patients’ symptoms have greatly improved, and the degenerative properties of the disease have started to slow.

“If you can have these incredible results for what I think is the most severe…neurocognitive disease there is, what kind of promise will they do down the pipeline for other neurocognitive diseases such as multiple sclerosis and Parkinson’s?” Rasheda said.

After seeing the amazing results this company has achieved, Rasheda is convinced that stem cells hold the key to treating these diseases in the future.

Someone dying of liver failure has cirrhosis of
the liver. usually a liver problem starts out
as inflammation of the liver cells. if treated
and the cause of it is stopped, then the cells
can heal. however, if it isn't treated in time and
the liver cells start to die off…then it means
the patient is in liver failure. Liver failure
is a progressive disease…it means that the
cells of the liver have died off to the point
that the functions they do to keep the body
healthy are deteriating or stopped.

Usually, the liver doesn't show any signs of
a problem until the functions of the cells
does this…that is why it is not diagnosed
by the doctor right away…people can walk
around with this problem and not know it.
However, it can be treated so that the liver
cells that are left may continue to live or not
die as soon as they normally would.

Usually, the first signs, depending on what
the cause of the liver problem is…is extreme
tiredness; some people develop flu like
symptoms. The very first visible sign
may be the yellowing of the whites of the
eye and skin, with darker color urine and
possible almost white colored stools.
As the disease progresses, they may
develop fluid in their abdominal area known
as Ascites. This fluid can be removed by
a procedure known as a paracentesis if
it build up too much. it helps give the
patient more comfort then when it is gone and
they are able to breathe much better. however,
this fluid will rebuild inside of them to be
drained again since it comes from the lack
of a protein that the liver used to make
efficiently, known as albumin. They
may also develop fluid in the legs and feet and
other areas of the body. This fluid is different
than the one above, as this fluid comes from
the body retaining too much sodium when
the liver is in failure. The doctor sometimes
places them on a diuretic, tells them how
much fluid they are allowed to have each day
and puts them on a "lower" sodium diet.
They may develop a condition known as
Encephalopathy. This is because the liver
isn't able to handle toxins in the body like
it once did. therefore, these toxins go
out into the blood and pass the barrier there
and into the brain. it can cause memory
problems and having a hard time to think
clearly. The doctor can help this by giving
medication that will cut down on the toxin.
Another thing they can develop is Portal
hypertension. The portal vein is what
carries blood from all our abdominal area
to the liver. since the liver cells are damaged,
the blood doesn't flow well to the liver anymore.
It backs up in this portal vein and goes into
smaller vessels that is not used to handling
this amount of blood. These vessels may
be weak in areas, like the esophagus, and
balloon outward and break open. This is
an extreme emergency them. The doctor
go into the esophagus, by way of the throat,
and can band these areas so they stop
bleeding…these areas are known as "varies".
The patient tend to bleed easily and their
blood doesn't clot as well. That is because
the liver doesn't make the factors, like it used
to, to help the blood to clot. so any bleeding
from the esophagus is a dire emergency to
get it taken care of.

Liver failure means that the cells of the
liver are not functioning well because some
of them are damaged and died off. however,
it is progressive but not complete liver failure.
There is a difference. Complete liver failure
is when almost all the cells of the liver are
gone and the functions they do can not be
enough to keep the body alive.
A patient with cirrhosis of the liver, should
try to be placed on the transplant list.
This requires much testing and evaluation by
different doctors.

I have a question about one of the disorders of the ear. can one have Ménière’s
disease, but only show the symptoms of tinnitis, rare(once every 2 months)
occurrence of dizziness? On that note, can a person still have Ménière’s disease
if the hearing loss was from birth, not a progressive disease?

As we know, this killer disease has no symptoms and only diagnose when it's too late. what could be done to avoid this or what to do to find out if you are not getting this? does it start by having stomach aches or similar to indigestion or colon cancer symptoms?

It isn't just pancreatic cancer that has no symptoms until it is advanced . . that is true of all most every single cancer . . and there are over 200 different types and just as many rare subtypes. Cancer is a progressive disease which means it start out microscopic and grows indefinitely. Tiny. big. Bigger. Large. Enormous. When it is tiny no one can find it in a body . . it is too small to be noticed . . cancer is not something foreign . . it is your own DNA that has mutated . . so the body considers a cancer just another part of the body. Small cancer can co-incide quite nicely inside the body . . it isn't until the cancer begins to invade surrounding tissue at the Bigger or Large stage that it may be noticed.

So . . no cancer does not 'start' by having stomach aches or similar indigestion . . by the time you feel any of that . . the cancer is advanced. you literally . . feel nothing . .when cancer first starts. and the rest will depend on how aggressive the type of tumor you have .. some grow very fast and can take days or weeks . . but some grow very slowly and can take years. If you have a fast growing tumor than the cancer may be noticable sooner but it is hard to get into treatment quick enough to stop it or slow it down . . if the tumors are slower growing than you may have more 'time' to make decisions about treatment. This fact is often confusing to people . . they do not realize that many cancers are aggressive and fast growing and that time is critical (you don't have time to 'experiment' with treatments to see what will work – you might only get one chance to control the disease). and, than there are other types of slower growing cancers in which people do have more time to try out treatments. Treatment for cancer can be complicated by many factors . . which is why it is difficult to treat and why there is no 'cure' for all cancers at this moment. There is treatment though for all cancer types and that treatment could lead to an individual remission or 'cure'. . no guarantee though.

A well known survivor of pancreatic cancer is Steven Jobs, the founder of the Apple Computer who was diagnosed in 2004 and is doing very well.

My aunt unfortunately has this. she started having problems with her stomach, like bad indigestion and pain in the stomach. she had tests, barium meal which showed up nothing. Then a year ago, she developed jaundice, which after that they discovered it was pancreatic cancer. she is now really thin, but getting chemotherapy, and has gained a few pounds. she has been told there is no cure and all they can do is try and shrink the tumour.
