Ischemic colitis is inflammation of the colon. it usually goes away on its own, but can cause permanent damage. Symptoms include diarrhea, vomiting, abdominal pain, bloody stools or passing blood alone, and low grade fever.

Diabetes: In diabetes blood sugar levels are too high. Prolonged high blood sugar can damage blood vessels. Ischemic colitis occurs when there is a deprivation of the blood supply to the colon. Damage to the blood vessel caused by high blood sugar can also cause nerve damage and vision loss.

Hernia: Inguinal hernias are a protrusion of the intestine through the abdominal wall. The bulge can reduce the blood flow to the colon causing ischemic colitis. Other symptoms of hernia include pain in the groin area that is more noticeable when coughing, lifting, or straining and a bulge near the pubic bone.

E. coli infections can also lead to ischemic colitis. it is typically caused by eating contaminated food. Symptoms include diarrhea, bloody diarrhea, vomiting, and abdominal pain and cramping. E. coli infection can be fatal.

Vasculitis is inflammation of the blood vessels. it can cause a shortage of blood to the internal organs, including the colon causing ischemic colitis. Symptoms of vasculitis include loss of appetite, fatigue, fever, weight loss, muscle pain, joint pain, numbness, and weakness.

Zelnorm (tegaserod) is used to treat irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) when there is constipation, but not diarrhea, involved. it was pulled from the market for most uses in 2007, but it still allowed in some cases. side effects of Zelnorm can include heart attack, chest pains, stroke, ongoing diarrhea, ischemic colitis, bloody stools, stomach pain, headache, dizziness, back pain, and nausea.

Lotronex (alosetron hydrochloride) is used to treat IBS when diarrhea, rather than constipation, is the primary problem. In 2008, the FDA issued a warning that Lotronex is known to cause ischemic colitis. Other side effects of Lotronex include constipation, abdominal pain, and nausea.

Digoxin, sold under the brand names Digitek and Lanoxin, is used to treat congestive heart failure, and heart rhythm disorder. side effects can include ischemic colitis, diarrhea, vomiting, rapid heart rate, slow heart rate, uneven heart rate, blurred vision, confusion, and enlarged breasts in men.

Premarin is an estrogen replacement drug derived from the urine of pregnant horses. it is used to treat the symptoms of menopause. side effects of Premarin can include ischemic colitis, diarrhea, breast pain, depression, hair loss, changes in sex drive, vaginal inflammation, leg cramps, nausea, insomnia, and an increased risk of cancer.
