I've been suffering prostate problems for almost 2 1/2 years. I've been to my MD office too many times including a Urologist.
I started with urination frequency 2 1/2 years ago and I was referred to a Urologist. he did DRE twice in 4 months 2 times (normal) and 2 times PSA, they were both also in normal range. he told me if the PSA go up at next blood test and he will do a biopsy but 1 year later, the PSA actually went down. both my Docs think my prostate was inflamed (prostatitis). It's been on & off with frequencies, little discomfort in the perineum (no pain) and 2 times my urine stream was weak a day after sex (I think it was swollen) and went away after a few days. And one time in 2 years (in the last 3 months), all the symptoms seemed to be gone completely for 3 months. It's now back and It's been almost 2 weeks now with discomforts in the perineum (again, no pain) and frequencies, I can feel it's swollen but my urine stream is OK.
Had prostatectomy 2 years ago. All PSA's since then < 0.1 inlcuding the one in Feb 07. Have had mild, dull hip pain for last 4 weeks (right side only). only hurts when sitting. Have a new bicycle with narrow seat. Pain worse after riding so I quit riding. my doctor (GP) did a quick exam and is sending me for bone scan, supposedly suspecting a hairline crack in hip bone. Do the symptoms fit this preliminary diagnosis? by the way, had MRI bone scan before surgery in 2005 which was negative for bone cancer. should I go ahead with the bone scan for the value of it finding other things?

Whom do you trust more on medical advice? Is it your doctor or a bunch of ordinary people ?

There may be other factors your Dr is considering: If you are slender build, there is a greater chance of osteoporosis. If you are taking meds to reduce testosterone or its effects, you are at greater risk for bone loss. the scan is painless and lasts about 20 min. No big deal. Better than a broken pelvis or snapped femur head.

Your over 50 right? a little Te isotope won't hurt you. Check your body for any hot spots. good to know.

My husband had prostatectomy 2 years ago, all PSA's since then 0.0; clear bone scan before the surgery. So I know a bit about it.

I would say not to worry…sounds like you are having a problem from the bicycle seat, or as your doc says, a crack in the hip bone. go ahead with the bone scan…it never hurts to double check. Chances are it will be ok, though.

hairline crack after riding a bike….nyaah…
unless you are SWEVERELY osteopenic or porotic….i highly doubt that…
the first thing that i would look at would be disc disease and do you have a sciatica from sitting on that teeny bike seat….
i would usggest a CT or MRI of the LS spine
NOW, did you have the prostatectomy for prostate CA? If so, then maybe doing a bone scan is in order, but not for trauma (riding the bike) but for a late metastatic spread of the cancer…
if you had your prostate removed, of course your PSA would be <0.1…
so, maybe he is looking for a recurrent CA and not telling you…
good luck

Prostate cancer has no symptoms in the early stages, but it can be detected with a simple blood test. Elevated levels of a protein in your blood suggest something is amiss in your prostate. Which can be confirmed by follow up testing including a biopsy of the prostate if necessary.

But is all the attention paid to PSA testing merited? what unintended consequences does this produce as a result? do enough good outcomes result to make pre-emptive screening worthwhile?

That’s a good question or two or three, don’t you think? Because if more cancers are detected then more are treated. the issue of monitoring for prostate cancer symptoms aside, over treatment is one potential result. Which is a problem in its own right because not all prostate cancers warrant treatment. With a secondary issue being that treatments often produce unpleasant side effects which would be avoided had not a course of treatment been under taken in the first place.

So while it’s true we wish for a simple formula that produces easy to understand recommendations, cancer often doesn’t work like. and prostate cancer doesn’t work like that even more.

Just had my third annual routine prostate rectal exam but noticed two symptoms afterward. the next day, I had to urinate over a dozen times (I generally average 4 times a day). I have also been experiencing difficulties maintaining an erection, which has never happened to me before. the doctor found no problems in my exam at all. I haven't informed him about these post-exam symptoms as yet. I'm just afraid that he'll balk at my claims because he might fear a lawsuit (I wouldn't sue him anyway).

Anyone ever have similar experience or know why this is happening? I'm guessing that the doctor bruised the prostate and urethra tissue during the exam, which may take a while to heal. Sound reasonable?

Actually, it sounds like you may have a bladder infection. I'd see the doc again

Sounds like either your own assumption is correct or it maybe that you are having,at least in part,a psychological response to the prodding and probing..Also did he do a PSA? if he did not I would urge you to get one done. It is possible to have prostate cancer that is undetected by the "finger test"

I usually experience soreness and sometimes a little blood in the urine.

I also recently had a rectal prostate exam. Afterward, I experienced loose bowel movements and more frequent urination for about three days. I'm not sure if it was from the exam or from the anticipation of the exam. It cleared up in a few days. I'd say just give it some time.

It would take quite an intense exam to do that!!
