I think my dog may be having seizures, but I need to know the symptoms. she is 7 months old, weighs 4 pounds and is a chihuaha and rat terrier mix.

and yes, I am taking my dog to a vet tonight, asap.

You're little pup could be getting over excited, when my moms pup gets excited he has asthma attacks until he calms down. But if the asthma proceeds it can lead to a small seizure. either way the vet will tell u what meds to get or how to calm ur puppy down. her pup is a chihuaha too. so they do tend to get wired from time to time.

My beagle/dachshund mix has epilepsy. Before she has a seizure her nose runs (drops hang off the end of it), she pants, and she has a funny far off look in her eyes. When she has a seizure she drools a lot and shakes. She can't walk, so we just pet her until it's over. Now that we know what to look for we give her a pill before the seizure starts and that stops it. She hasn't had one in over a year. If your dog has epilepsy, medicine will probably help. Good luck!

Well there are different types. Mild ones where they get shaky and jerky then go around in circles after words they seem disoriented. then there whats called "Grand Mall" where they lay on their sides feet kinda thrashing like they are running and mouth clenching sometimes losing consciences, losing their functions urinating and pooping then slowly come out of it acting disoriented and spacey until they are back to normal. Its hard to find reasons why some all of a sudden start , blood work looks perfect and have had no head trauma. Some animals may have just one or don't have them very often. It is said one never dies from seizing unless they fall from a high place. usually a Vet will advise you to wait and see how frequent they have them and explain that the medications to prevent them (Phenobarbital or Valium) can make them tired all the time and they seem dopey and not active or no personality and if they only have them every once in a great while you may just decide to ride them out and not put on drugs as long as they don't get more and more frequent..On some occasions they can determine if its related to a certain problem like low glucose or a lactating female can get calcium deficiency and once treated they stop..

They can have different symptoms. Shaking badly, unresponsive, seeming to stare off into space, sometimes just going stiff where you think they are dead. I had a Chihuahua with hydrocephalus and she had seizures. She died a year ago today. She was 4 years old. Your dog may be hypoglycemic(low blood sugar). Give her some nutrical if you have it, if not, give her some karo syrup or honey to help bring her sugar back up. Hope she will be okay.

eyes roll back, convulsions, drop in tracks to sleep, just take to vet to ck because there could be more to it then just what symptoms then which ones that you have not given, to compare for anybody to give an honest answer, but these are just some of the ones I have had happen to mine and that was just some of what the vet explained to me and these are the extreme.

I have a 16 week old puppy that i recently rehomed from a stray i'm unsure of the breed but looks like a doberman cross dachshund (dont know if it is that is the breed), I wasnt really aware of the term lockjaw when i looked up further i found it is a symptom of tetanus. when taking the new pup on a walk she plays with her ball and her mouth seems to lock around the ball, she paws at her mouth as if uncomfortable and my boyfriend manages to get the ball out of her mouth but then her mouth stays in the same locked position. I am aware that dogs do not have the ability to lock their jaws…but what is my pup doing??? her mouth returns to normal after a short while so do think it is tetanus as she seems well otherwise and has been checked over by a vet only recently. My boyfriend is convinced that all SBT, APBT etc lock their jaws i explained that they just use their strength, but he says the same thing happens they bite onto a stick and even when removed cannot move their jaws.. has anyone any answers as to what it is and hy it happens!!

For the record, APBT do NOT have "locking jaws." The only reason they bite and don't let go is because that is what they where bred to do – be tenacious, stubborn, and strong. TO please their masters. Back in the day when they where used for dog fighting and bull baiting, letting go meant sure death.

If your dog's jaw gets "stuck" in any position it is a question to ask the vet. Period.

thats a common feature that dobermans have, being able to lock their jaw around something and not letting go. it sounds like ur puppy just isnt used to it yet. a doberman i know does the same thing but as he got older he was able to unlock his jaw faster. i think ur puppy will grow into the ability to unlock her jaw again, but if you really think its something more serious than take her to a vet so she can get checked out

how long does rabies appear? bacause i bit by my puppy now my wound is healed but i have no symptoms like itching numb also infection on it does it have rabies?

if your dog doesnt become sick and die with in 3 weeks you should be fine, if it gets sick you need to go get the post exposure treatment, if you do have to see a doctor about it make sure you are given the rabies immunoglobin and the vaccine, but make sure they dont put any of the shots in the gluteal reagion(butt),
if the dog was rabid and at an infectious stage when it bit you and it dies with in 3 weeks, the disease has a 5-80% chance of becoming an infection(reproducing in your body) it depends on the site of the bite, what stage the animal was in when it bit you and the severity of the bite. Syptoms then can appear anytime between 4 days to a year after the time of the bite, most people with dog bites got infected with in 6 months the average is 2-3 months, then the victim will feel ill, get pain/numbness,along with tingling/itch stating at the bite site and continuing upwards and it may lead to paralysis. Dog bites are normally atributed with classical "furious" type rabies that involves hydrophobia(50% of victims), aerophobia,seizures,and halicuicnations. some victims of bat bites and in rare cases of dog bites have a slowly developing paralysis usually starting at the site of the bite and the legs. a victim after the symptoms appear would die in 2-17(average is 4-9 days in classic rabies(dog bites,cat or bat) but paralytic rabies(bat bites,organ transplant from infected person) victims usually die with in 2 weeks, but from what i read 17 days is the absolute longest a person can survive if not of life support but there's never been a documented case in the united states in the last 30 years of someone living 17 days with out ventelator support)….watch your dog carefully but there's no need to worry as long as your dog stays in good health for the next 3 weeks, the vaccine is expensive in the US i had it with all 5 doses, cost around $2,000 usd

If you live in America it is highly unlikely that you got rabies from a dog (bats, skunks and raccoons are another story). If you are worried check with your Dr.

I do have to ask why on God's green earth would you bite your dog?!? You are lucky that the dog didn't bite you back.

also to find out if i got bitten by a rabid puppy i have to watch them for 10 days after the bite ryt? and if so, if the puppy doesn't die in 10 days and still acts normal then their are not rabid ryt?

After a visit to the emergency vets i was told my dog had a temperature and a stomach infection due to vomitting, panting, and lethargic symptoms, i have to take her back in a day if she hasn't perked up… She's been given antibiotics and hasn't moved very much all day and constantly sleeps… is this normal for a dog with this diagnosis and would the medications make her sleepy?

This can and does kill dogs. the best advise I can give you is leave food down but don't panic if she doesn't eat it. the main thing is to give her water every 15 minutes. Every 5 minutes or so pinch and pull up the skin at the back of her neck (it will not hurt her) once pulled up see how long it takes to go down. If it goes down straight away shes ok. however if it goes down slowly get her straight to the vets DO NOT WAIT TILL MORNING PLEASE because it means she is dehydrated and the slower it goes down the worse it is. I lost a 6 week old puppy 3 weeks ago with the same thing. Its not nice. please post another one to say how she goes on THANKS AND GOOD LUCK x

Oh dear, that must be so worrying for you. I can't help you but, but I really feel for you. I love my dog (and the one that has passed), but they are your babies and when you see them in pain and can't ask them what is wrong you feel so helpless. I really hope that she gets better. good luck xx

hi yes, my dog had the same last week, he was given paste to dry him up, antibitoics, injection for pain then pain releif tablets. my dog responded on day 3, you need to make sure she doesnt get dehyrated, feed on small amounts of boiled chicken and rice. he was very quit, sleepy, no energy, painful stomach, not a happy little pomeranian at all.
I think the gerneral feeling poorly makes your dog more sleeply just the same for us, we only want to lay down and sleep. If she doesnt pick up in 5 days take her back.
Do you no what caused it? because she could be still eating it etc. a lot of plants in your garden can cause this so go careful. I no that my baby got it from eating a stuffed soft bone type chew i brought from pets at home, so thats a no no from now on.

Get the dog to the vet – if you can't right away – go to the grocery store to the baby food department and pick up some Pedialyte – it is electrolites. You may need to fill a syringe and squirt some directly in the side of your dogs mouth if she won't drink it directly. You have to force fluids and now.

LIft up her lips and look at her gums – are they pale? If so get some Molasses or dark Corn Syrup and dab some on her tongue.

Make sure she goes back – even if she seems a little better. Gastroenteritis, by experience, is often 'mild' but can be far more serious, depending on the age and condition of the dog. A little chicken can help encourage a dog to eat, as can 'chicken flavoured water to encourage drinking. on one occasion, the vet gave my dog medication to encourage sleepiness, to just break the cycle of sickness. If she has been drinking and is in no pain, leave sleeping dogs lie, until the next appointment… good luck.

Some of the meds given to settle her stomach can make her sleepy. Gastroenteris can be very severe and life threatening if it stops them from eating and being able to absorb nutrition. If you are concerned call your vet.
