I just bought a cat from a friend. she was shy at first but she sometimes scratches and bites a little. recently she would jump out the window and stay out side for the whole day, sometimes 2 days. I'm worried if she caught rabies and can transmit them to me. if so should i get checked or if the symptoms show will it be too late??

If a person is bit by a rabid animal, it takes a few weeks for the foaming-at-the mouth thing to happen. if that happens, it's way too late. right after you get bit, I would go to the ER or something and get the shot, because it would be better then than later on.

I seriously doubt your cat has rabies. Some cats just have an attitude. every rabid animal I have ever seen or heard about had to be killed to prevent it from attacking you. They cannot be scared away, as their brain has (deteriorated for lack of a better term) beyond the point of rational thought. you can get a mild infection from cat scratched though and should clean them with an antiseptic.

my cat was let outside for a few hours. when suddenly we heard a cat cry and we ran outside to help him. We found him in the bushes hissing at something, we couldn't see what, but he let us pick him up and take him back inside. when he came in, he continued to act strange. (breathing hard, but laying down, he is eating but did not want to drink water, could he have rabies? or is it too soon to tell?

The incubation period (the time it takes for symptoms to show) can be a few days to several years. it normally takes a few months though. I suggest calling your vet anyways in case she has been injured. her behavior may be strange because she was so scared.

The symptoms of rabies take a long time, sometimes years, to start showing. And unless he was bitten by a rabid animal, then he didn't contract rabies. you should take him to the vet and have him vaccinated against rabies. then you won't have to worry about it. Rabies is a very serious and usually fatal, but preventable, illness. Rabies is less of a threat then it used to be, but it still does occur.

Its not rabies, that takes months. he probably had a fight with another cat, but could have been attacked by a dog or coyote or been bitten by a snake or spider or bug. he could have been hit by a car, too, or have an illness. If he is still breathing hard or his gums are pale, he needs to go to the emergency clinic NOW. If he is breathing ok and his gums aren' pale, take him to your regular vet tomorrow and have him checked out.

Pets with Rabies can take weeks to months to show signs. your cat probably got spooked, or chased by something which got him very scared! In the future, for public safety and for your cats safety, try to keep him inside or at least make sure he is always up to date on vaccines, especially Rabies! Animal Control will never hesitate to seize a pet not up to date on Rabies vaccines if they ever receive a bite wound of unknown origin, or bite another animal or person.

Almost half of people vaccinated with ‘old stock vaccine‘ may have appreciable local side effects and only 5 in 10,000 may have serious side effects. The latest anti-rabies vaccines have minimal side effects. The Purified Chick Embryo Cell (PCEC) and Human Diploid Cell (HDC) vaccines give 100% protection not only to those who are bitten by rabid dogs but also to those who work with rabies virus and handle reservoir animals. all vaccines are easily available worldwide at reasonable rates. Neurological complications may develop in persons vaccinated with ‘old stock vaccine‘.

Incubation Period: The incubation period of rabies disease is usually between one and two months. in extreme cases incubation period may be a few days or rarely, even years. The site of the bite is indicative in determining the length of incubation period. Infants and children have a shorter incubation period than adults. Restlessness, agitation, excitation, confusion, muscle spasms, hallucinations, thought disorders and hydrophobia are common signs of possibility of development of rabies in person infected with rabies virus.

Diagnosis: The diagnosis of rabies in animals is made by microscopic examination of stained brain smears or histological sections for Negri bodies. The biological test for rabies is intra-cerebral inoculation of mice with the nervous tissue squash of animals or body secretions of infected human beings and isolation of virus from inoculated mice after an incubation period of 1-2 weeks. in human beings the rabies virus can directly be isolated from saliva, urine and cerebrospinal fluid, and revealed by electron microscopic study.

a dog bit me when i was only 9 or 10. im now 23. the dog died several years after that incident. is there a possibility that the dog was rabid and that symptoms may show sometime later? I've heard that rabies symptoms may show even 30 years after a person was bit by a rabid animal. how true is this? please share as much knowledge as u have regarding this topic.

The puppies are a little more than 4 weeks old and were born in a neighbor's shed, so they can't have been infected after birth. the mother was a street dog and hasn't shown any symptoms of rabies yet, but I heard it can take up to 6 months for symptoms to show. is it safe to adopt and handle the puppies? they haven't shown any symptoms either. Can rabies be transmitted through the father?

Well they still could have been affected after birth with being in a shed, but if a rabid raccoon or bat or something had been in there with them chances are you would have a couple dead puppies. Puppies can get rabies from any mammal that has rabies, but they won't have rabies just because the father had rabies, unless the father was there after they were born and was able to trade saliva with them…Rabies is passed through saliva problem being rabies causes increased salivation so more rabies for everyone. If an unvaccinated dog comes in contact with a rabid animal there is a very good chance that the dog will be infected. the survival rate for puppies with rabies is only 20% so you'll know if they have rabies. Puppies don't take that long to show. very few dogs do. it takes longer for rabies to show in cats because their immune system is naturally stronger than a dog's. but for all intents and purposes the puppies can't get rabies from the father unless he was there after their birth which is highly unlikely in the dog world…it isn't sexually transmitted it is transmitted through bites because it's in the saliva. anyway all you can really do is wait and see, but I would say the puppies are fine to handle unless you see them acting crazy and trying to bite and maul everything. If they are acting ok you would be unlikely to contract rabies anyway because they won't be biting you. No real way to tell. It's a risk you take with wild animals. the chances of rabies also vary greatly depending on your area.

Rabies is not usually transmitted from mother to pups. If the mom has circulating virus, she should be showing symptoms already, and likely wouldn't have survived to give birth.

In any event the puppies must stay with their mother until weaned, ideally at least 8 weeks and possibly longer. If you're in doubt about safety, have your local Animal Control or humane society take the mother and puppies for the next few weeks. Perhaps you can contribute something to their care and upkeep, and commit to adopting one of the puppies.

Ok- does the mother have rabies? Rabies is transmitted through the bite of an infected animal. the saliva of the infected animal gets into the blood stream. Rabies is a fairly quick disease. in a matter of days after the bite, symptoms will appear. not months. obviously all the pups should see a vet and should have been handled daily from day one. I fear for the adoption prospects of these pups since the mom was a street dog and obviously the pups have gone 4 weeks without human socialization.

the safest thing is to cull them- goodness knows what else they could be carrying (rabies is the least concern here, other diseases are easier to pass from father and/or mother to puppies) and what they may infect other dogs with- plus, the mother being a street dog, chances are that she's wild, and wouldn't be adoptable.
