Well, now I know for sure what my answer will be when my almost 11-year-old daughter‘s pediatrician asks if we want the HPV vaccine at her next check-up: An emphatic “NO.” I was leaning in that direction anyway, for various reasons (more on those in a minute), but the latest news on Gardisil pretty much sealed the deal — and if you have a tween girl, it might do the same for you.

In a study of 900 girls and young women between the ages of 11 and 26 who received the HPV vaccine, it was the 11- to 12-year-old group who experienced the worst side effects, from pain, dizziness, bruising, and swelling at the injection site to (in rare cases) fainting. These symptoms generally showed up about two weeks after the vaccine was administered.

What bothers me about these findings isn’t that any of the side effects are so horrific or life-threatening — though of course it doesn’t help that my daughter happens to be at the riskiest age. what bothers me is that researchers are still in the process of finding out what Gardisil is capable of doing to kids, but the CDC and the American Academy of Pediatrics are acting like it’s perfectly safe.

Maybe it is perfectly safe. Unfortunately, we don’t know that yet. Unlike all of the other vaccines my kids have gotten so far, the HPV vaccine is new — so new that it’s impossible to tell at this point what the long-term “side effects” could be. and like I said, maybe there aren’t any. But why should I allow my daughter to be a guinea pig?

Are you concerned about Gardisil’s potential side effects?

Chief Justice Rehnquist’s Death Focuses Attention on Thyroid Cancer

Kensington, MD (PRWEB) September 6, 2005

The news that the Supreme Court’s Chief Justice William Rehnquist has died of thyroid cancer on September 3, 2005 has increased awareness of this fairly uncommon cancer.

The thyroid is the butterfly-shaped gland that lies at the front of the neck, beneath the voice box, and behind the “Adam’s Apple.” The thyroid’s function is to produce hormone that helps the body utilize energy, and regulate metabolism. in rare cases, the thyroid becomes cancerous.

It’s estimated that this year, there will be 25,690 new cases of thyroid cancer in the U.S. Of these, about 19,190 will be in women and about 6,500 in men. about 1,490 people (860 women and 630 men) are expected to die of thyroid cancer in 2005. Thyroid cancer is actually one of the few cancers that are becoming more common in the past several years, with a growth rate of 3% per 100,000 people each year.

A healthy thyroid is around the size of a quarter, and cannot usually be felt through the skin. But an enlarged thyroid, and benign or cancerous lumps in the thyroid can sometimes be felt or seen externally.

“It’s estimated that more than 13 million Americans have undiagnosed thyroid conditions,” said thyroid patient advocate Mary Shomon, who has been publishing books and newsletters about thyroid disease and advocating on behalf of thyroid disease patients since 1997.

Millions of Americans have undiagnosed thyroid problems, including an underactive thyroid (hypothyroidism), an overactive thyroid (hyperthyroidism), nodules, goiter (enlarged thyroid), and thyroid cancer.

It’s thought that Rehnquist had a particularly rare, fast-moving and almost always fatal form of thyroid cancer known as anaplastic cancer. most thyroid cancer, however, is highly treatable and survivable.

Could you have thyroid cancer? to aid in early detection of thyroid enlargement or nodules, you can perform a simple self-exam of the thyroid, looking for lumps or enlargements in the neck that may point to thyroid conditions. to detect a thyroid abnormality, follow these steps:

1. Stand in front of a mirror

2. Stretch your neck back

3. Swallow some water

4. while swallowing, look for enlargement in your neck (below the Adam’s Apple, above the collar bone area)

5. Feel the area to confirm any enlargement or bump

6. if you feel or see anything unusual, see an doctor for evaluation and further testing

Your physician should also perform a manual thyroid examination at every physical.

In 2005, 25,690 new cases of thyroid cancer are expected in the U.S. — 19,190 in women and 6,500 in men.

Currently, there are more than 200,000 thyroid cancer patients in the U.S.

About 1,490 people (860 women and 630 men) are expected to die of thyroid cancer in 2005.

About 1,460 people (840 women, 620 men) are expected to die of thyroid cancer in 2004.

Thyroid cancer is one of the few cancers that are becoming more common in the past several years, with a growth rate of 3% per 100,000 people each year.

Thyroid cancer often goes undetected because patients do not experience any symptoms.

If untreated, thyroid cancer can spread to other areas of the body.

10-15 million Americans have nodules that may be a sign of a thyroid disorder.

Men who have nodules are three times more likely to have thyroid cancer.

Thyroid cancer is more prevalent in people exposed to head/neck radiation for medical treatments, and in people exposed to radiation via the nuclear testing in the 40s and 50s, nuclear accidents, living or working near nuclear plants, or situations such as the Chernobyl disaster.

There are four types of thyroid cancer: Papillary, Follicular, Medullary, and Anaplastic.

Papillary, Follicular, and Medullary cancers are the most common types of thyroid cancer, and affects mostly women age 25 – 65. These cancers are almost always treatable and curable when detected early. Treatment involves surgery and radioactive iodine to remove and ablate any cancerous thyroid tissue. Long-term survival rate is high.

Anaplastic is a rare and serious thyroid cancer that usually causes a large mass, spreads quickly, and is more common in those over 65 and in men. Long-term survival is poor, and 80% of patients die within a year.

Thyroidectomy — surgical removal of the thyroid — followed by radioactive iodine, is the typical treatment for thyroid cancer.

State health officials are warning Harrisburg area residents about possible exposure to measles. Measles is a highly contagious illness that, in rare cases, causes severe illness or death. it can cause pregnancy complications in pregnant women.

The warning is related to five confirmed measles cases in Perry County, according to the Pennsylvania Department of Health. It’s aimed at people who visited the Newport Public Library between 5:50 p.m. and 8:30 p.m. on Wednesday, and the Lowe’s store at 4000 Union Deposit Road in Lower Paxton Township between 4 p.m. and 7:45 p.m. Friday. the possible exposure at the library involves people who attended a book sale in the basement of the library on North Fourth Street in Newport, Perry County.

The health department is warning people present at those locations to be on the lookout for measles symptoms, which can include runny nose, watery eyes, cough and high fever. after several days, those symptoms are followed by a raised, red rash that begins on the face and spreads down the body. Symptoms begin one to two weeks after exposure.

The five Perry County cases involve members of one family, said Dr. Stephen Ostroff, Pennsylvania’s acting physician general. a sixth person, who isn’t a member of the family but had contact with them, is suspected of having measles. That person, a child, was present at the library and Lowe’s store, and could have spread the illness, Ostroff said.

While measles are highly contagious, the odds of spreading them in a large area such as a department store are low, Ostroff said. Also, the vast majority of Americans are immune to measles because they’ve been vaccinated, or were exposed to measles during the pre-vaccine era, according to the health department.

The people who are at risk include infants less that a year old who haven’t yet been vaccinated, people who received an inactivated vaccine used from 1969 to 1967, and people born after 1957 who received only one dose of the MMR vaccine, which includes vaccine for measles, mumps and rubella. Also at risk are people who refused vaccine or come from areas were vaccination wasn’t available.

In the days before vaccine, Ostroff said, children commonly got measles and made a full recovery. however, some had to be hospitalized, and the disease caused several hundred deaths annually, Ostroff said. “this is a very good reminder of why it’s important to be vaccinated,” he said.

People who are at high risk can obtain protection through a dose of immune globulin given within six days of exposure, according to the health department.

Ostroff said anyone who develops measles symptoms should contact their doctor. Doctors or people with symptoms who need information, or want to obtain the immune globulin, can call the health department at 877-724-3258.

Information is available on the health department’s website at health.state.pa.us/pdf/epi/MeaslesFactSheet.pdf.

Like can a 3 year old show symptoms?

Yes, in very rare cases a 3 or 4 year old can show symptoms.
Absolutely not. Schizophrenia usually manifests in late adolescence and early adulthood. VERY RARELY older children can be diagnosed with early onset dementia (which is a precursor to schizophrenia), but this diagnoses is very, very uncommon, and would never be given to someone as young as 3.

“Kids are not getting diagnosed early enough,” he said. “There’s a watch-and-wait cycle in many pediatrician’s offices so the time to referral can be over a year. Then there’s more wait to see a specialist.” Typically, diagnosis occurs around age 4 or 5.

Autism spectrum disorder is the fastest-growing developmental disorder in America, believed to affect 1 in every 110 children, including up to 1 in 58 boys. It’s a “pervasive developmental disorder” with symptoms that are both behavioral and complex across three domains: language, repetitive behaviors and social behaviors. Children with ASD frequently fail to relate to their environment or age-appropriate activities. Symptoms usually appear by age 3.

Early diagnosis makes a profound positive difference to ASD children and their families, according to major studies, including “The Early Start Denver Model” recently published in the journal Pediatrics. Early behavioral therapy improves IQ, communication and social skills and the ability to “maintstream” children, it said. It may in rare cases remove the diagnosis of ASD.

Autism’s heritability factor is estimated at about 70 percent. Breast cancer heritability is around 30-40 percent, Paul said. most diseases also have an environmental component. But the strength of that genetic component in autism is why genetic counseling is so important for families, and Paul said that is why Lineagen built it into the test in the report that explains the results, guidance for the local doctor and the ability to talk directly to one of Lineagen’s genetic counselors as part of the testing process.

Consumers cannot buy the test directly but must go through a physician. many insurance policies will cover its cost.

Lineagen also offers an on-line version of the Modified Checklist for Autism in Toddlers (M-CHAT) at m-chat.org , a developmental screening tool for toddlers 16 to 30 months old,?and plans to add other free Web tools.
