I get this deal, sometimes. my head gets all jittery. it is like I am shaking my head, from side to side, as if to say, "no".
I am not overly intoxicated. there are no drugs involved, other than a couple of asprin. my hands don't shake, just my head. and yes, I have been to the doctor, several times. Apparently, I'm just fine, but this stuff is driving me nuts. do you have any ideas ?

My father in law, who is 58, recently went to the doctors with a tingling/numbness on one side of his body. the Dr.s did a brain scan and have told him he has parkinsons disease. I've looked all over the web at parkinsons sites and they all seem to agree that there should be a tremor, stiffness, or slowness of movement. none of which he has. it seems more like he might have had a silent stroke or mini stroke. my husband is looking into trying to get him to get a second opinion since we both feel the doctors are wrong but we aren't entirely sure. So what does this sound like? does my father in law have a really early case of parkinsons or could it have been a stroke?

While tingling/numbness could be an early sign of Parkinson's Disease , no doctor can diagnose PD from a brain scan. almost always the only way to diagnose is to give the patient PD medications and see if they relieve the symptoms. Symptoms are often vague in the beginning but I would not trust this diagnosis. please encourage him to get a second opinion .

Numbness and tingling are a sign that there is a nerve issue. they are a symptom which can indicate a spinal injury or stroke but they are also a precursor to tremor or other neurodegenerative conditions. I know this personally because I have Parkinson's disease.

There are no lab diagnostic tests in place to diagnose Parkinson's disease yet although they are in the works. Brain scans such as a CT scan is, however, used to diagnose strokes – looking for blood flow interruption. One of the reasons for using various scans is to rule out other conditions which can be diagnosed with these lab tests.

The tingling and numbness on one side does indeed sound like a stroke and that is one reason your father-in-law was tested. Apparently the tests ruled out stroke.

Please understand that the neurologist – at least I assume that your father-in-law was referred to neurology because it is best to have that PD diagnosis made by a motion specialist – also did other testing.

The most common test used is both verbal and observational. the doctor will use the UPDRS or the revised version to assess body function. Specifically: non-motor aspects of daily living; motor experiences of daily living; motor exam of the entire body and complications:

It never hurts to get a second opinion because these sensations did occur throughout one side of his body as opposed to just a hand, leg or foot which is more common. the symptoms which sent me to the doctor for (referral to neuro) a diagnosis was the numbness and tingling in my thumb. I was hoping for a carpal tunnel diagnosis but I already knew that I had other early symptoms (precursors) of the disease. I also felt that I had balance issues and was no longer comfortable on a ladder – which was serious for me because I needed to be able to make both home repairs and to use a ladder while at work on occasion.

Have you or your husband talked to your father-in-law about what the full exam and lab testing involved? you may find that your father-in-law has other early symptoms such as depression, change in handwriting or voice, sleep issues, loss of sense of smell, leg drag, loss of arm swing (on one side) and a few more which begin before the extreme dopamine neuron loss.

What medication did the doctor prescribe? When I was diagnosed, Azilect was not available although I did switch from Selegiline and Mirapex to Azilect once it was available because it is supposed to slow progression of PD. I was very insistent that I was not ready to take levodopa/carbidopa (Sinemet) because I didn't want to rush the time when the drug would begin to wear off.

You may find that a second opinion appointment might not be covered under his health insurance so be prepared for that. Nonetheless, it is a good idea in order to be sure that he is being properly treated and I join the others in encouraging you to do so. even if the diagnosis is the same, there may be some benefit. When you are looking, please try to find a physician with whom ideas can be shared. it the long run, this will be very important to your father-in-law and the family.

For several years now, the dr. has been treating me for allergies. BUT even when I take the meds as directed, I still come down w/respiratory infections, at least once per year. on top of that, I take thyroid medication, a daily vitamin, and additional iron supplements yet I'm still exhausted when I get home from work. (The last time I went to the dr he said I was "down a pint," meaning that there is a low red-blood cell count, as I underestood.) Also, I haven't been able to smell anything or taste anything for months now–everything tastes/smells like either wet sawdust or ashes, whether I cook it or eat out, whether it's gas being pumped into the car or flowers. Any comments?? TIA.

Sounds like your body is toxic. Could be fungus/candida in the body.

There are so many symptoms that it could hardly be caused by allergies. Find another Dr. for a second opinion and treatment. good luck.

Consider your activities, and decide for yourself what you can do for yourself to lower your risk of URI's. Antibiotics can help. I think your Doc is just getting more visits out of you! If your Red is Low then white is high, which only confirms infection. I had the same crud. and I am still hacking! Try some B vitamins. maybe a better brand of vitamin.

Try changing your diet. Drink more water. You may try saunas.

Another suggestion would be to invest in a good air cleaning system for your home.

My daughter has had a chronic cough since January, she's now almost 15 months old. We've had countless trips to emerg, walk-in clinics, and we are currently on our second pediatrician, who now thinks she may have asthma. Having severe asthma myself, I realize that she has a good chance of developing asthma, but her symptoms really don't appear to be asthma symptoms, and she has no allergic reaction – other than coughing – to our cats and dog (no sneezing, runny nose or itchy, watery eyes). She coughs more at night. anyway, our first pediatrician conducted a sweat conductivity test to rule out Cystic Fibrosis. Although we were told that the test was negative, we just found out from our new ped that it was actually borderline with a level of 46 (one of the many reasons for the second opinion!). What are other symptoms of CF? She has a very rattly chest, especially after eating, and has the chronic cough.

You may perhaps get her motion examined and dewormise the child under medical supervision.

Hi, Karla, you've gotten some very good answers already. Follow up on that sweat chloride test.
Because there are over 1500 known mutations of the CFTR gene, it is entirely possible that your daughter has pulmonary symptoms only, or that her gastrointestinal symptoms are mild (if she had CF, that is). I work in a CF clinic and I know a patient who has the most common CF mutation (delta F508) and his only symptom is nasal polyps.
But the only way to know is to get a follow up test. if the second test is borderline, then there's genetic testing to do, which will be definitive.
If your daughter does have CF, she will still be able to live a long and healthy life, as long as she (and you) do all the treatments needed.

Generally speaking, a positive sweat chloride test is distinguished by a reading of > 60 mEq/L. CF has both pulmonary and digestive symptoms, however the pulmonary symptoms are often more pronounced. in the pulmonary system, excessive mucus is the hallmark of CF.

I would get another sweat chloride test. a level of 46 mEq/L is above normal (10 – 35 mEq/L), but is technically not a "positive" sweat chloride test (this is where the discrepancy between the 2 pediatricians is most likely arising).

The good news is that we have come a long way in the treatment of CF. CF patients are living much longer than they ever used to, and establishing an early diagnosis and treatment plan predicts better success.

For your own peace of mind, I would consider consulting a specialist (perhaps a pediatric pulmonologist) and having another sweat chloride test performed.

It sounds exactly what my nephew had for the longest time. They also said it was Cystic Fibrosis. It turned out to be RSV. Respiratory Syncytial Virus Infection. I would have them check the baby out because its very contagious amongst kids. my nephew had it for at least 4 months before they figured out what it was. it usually only last about a week or two, but I have seen it last months.
