Often called the clap, gonorrhea is caused by the Neisseria gonorrhea bacteria. this bacteria can be found in moist areas of the body including the vagina, penis, eyes, throat, and rectum. Infection can occur with contact to any of these areas. an infected person may also spread gonorrhea from one part of their body to another by touch. Gonorrhea can be spread through all forms of sexual activity including oral, vaginal, and rectal sex. Mothers who are infected at the time of childbirth can pass gonorrhea on to their infants.

Who gets gonorrhea?
Although any sexually active person can get gonorrhea, it is most prevalent among those from 15 to 30. Women who have vaginal intercourse with an infected man have a 60 to 90 percent chance of becoming infected; while men who have vaginal sex with and infected women have a lower 30 to 50 percent chance of becoming infected by this sexually transmitted disease.

What are the reproductive health risks to women who get gonorrhea?

The Bartholin's glands may cause problems for women with gonorrhea. the ducts can become blocked and swell until a sore is formed. if this happens the lower area of the vulva will turn red on the infected side. if the infection is allowed to spread, untreated, it can affect the uterus with a high risk that a woman will contract pelvic inflammatory disease (PID) leading to possible future fertility problems.

Men who have untreated gonorrhea risk the bacteria spreading up the urethra where it possibly affect the prostate, seminal vesicles, Cowper's glands, and the epididymis where it will form a painful sore, and fever with chills. if the epididymis is scarred men may encounter fertility problems later.

What are the symptoms of gonorrhea?
The symptoms of genital gonorrhea differ in men and women.

The cervix is primarily affected in women infected with this sexually transmitted disease; however gonorrhea can spread to the uterus and fallopian tubes if left untreated. many women may not experience recognizable symptoms; however when symptoms do occur they can include:

abnormal bleeding
a burning sensation during urination
vaginal discharge
general irritation of the outer area of the vagina
The primary point of infection in men is most often the urethra. about one in five infected men may not experience symptoms of gonorrhea; however the majority who do have symptoms may experience:

a yellow pus-like discharge from the tip of the penis
stinging during urination
frequent urination
blood in the urine
swelling of the glands in the groin
the head of the penis may turn red
Other symptoms such as are pain, swelling, discharge can occur when gonorrhea affects the throat or rectum of both women and men.

What are the treatments for gonorrhea?
The CDC recommends several treatment options which include:

Cefixime 400 mg orally in a single dose,
Ceftriaxone 125 mg IM in a single dose,
Ciprofloxacin 500 mg orally in a single dose,
Ofloxacin 400 mg orally in a single dose, PLUS Azithromycin 1 g orally in a single dose,
Doxycycline 100 mg orally twice a day for 7 days
Patients who are unable to tolerate these treatments can be offered alternative pharmaceutical treatments.

How to prevent gonorrhea and other sexually transmitted diseases…
Condoms provide your best protection against gonorrhea and other sexually transmitted diseases. of course you have to know how to use a male condom , or you can choose to use the female condom– just don't try using both a male and female condom at the same time. STDs are divided into two broad categories, those caused by viruses and those caused by bacteria. Viral infections include Human Papillomavirus (HPV), Genital Herpes, and HIV.

Bacterial and protozoa infections include Chlamydia, Gonorrhea, trichomoniasis, and Syphillis.

Bacterial and protozoal infections are much easier to treat than viral infections.

In most cases, your health care provider will give you a prescription for an antibiotic or an antibiotic injection. in general, there is no cure for viral STDs, but medications and other treatments are available to control symptoms.

STDs are spread by sexual activity, including vaginal, anal and oral sex and can cause infection in not only the sex organs but also in the anus and the mouth.

Some infections, such as HPV and herpes, are even spread through skin-to-skin contact without any sort of penetration.

You can’t always tell by looking at someone that they have an STD. Overall, 80 percent of people with an STD have no symptoms or don’t recognize their symptoms but can infect their sexual partner.

Twenty-five percent of college students will contract an STD.

HPV is the most common STD in America, with at least 50 percent of sexually active men and women becoming infected in their lifetime. this virus may cause not only genital warts, but also cancer of the vagina, penis, anus, or mouth.

Chlamydia is the second most common STD in America, and over half of those infected have no symptoms. Left untreated, chlamydia infection can result in permanent infertility.

One in five Americans have genital herpes, but up to 90 percent of people don’t recognize the symptoms.

Alabama is ranked in the top five states in rates of chlamydia, gonorrhea, and syphilis infections.

How to protect yourself?

Every sexually active person not in a mutually monogamous relationship should be tested annually for STDs or when starting a new sexual relationship.

If you’ve tested positive for an STD it’s your responsibility to tell everyone you’ve recently had any sexual contact with that they may also be infected.

Once you are treated for an STD, make sure your sexual partner is tested and treated also or you will become re-infected. three weeks after treatment you should return to your health care provider to confirm that the infection has cleared.

Ideally, you should not resume sexual activity until the results of the testing.

Condoms are the best way to prevent the spread of STDs, but even consistent condom use doesn’t eliminate a person’s risk of becoming infected. Consistent condom use only reduces the risk of gonorrhea and chlamydia infections by 60 to 80 percent and reduces the risk of trichomoniasis by only 30 percent. Condoms provide even less protection against those infections spread by skin-to-skin contact.

A vaccine is available for the HPV virus, which can reduce your risk of developing genital warts and even cervical cancer.

Cervical cancer is most often detected through pap smears. Cervical cancer usually develops with no outward symptoms. unlike most cancers that develop later in life, cervical cancer is most prevalent in women under 50. somewhere between 11,000-12,000 new cases of cervical cancer are diagnosed each year, with approximately 11 women a day dying from the disease. Therefore, beginning at the age women become sexually active or age 18, it is important to visit a gynecologist annually for a pap smear. there are several factors, however, that may increase a woman’s risk factor for developing cervical cancer:

1.    Smoking. 2.    Diet. Diets low in fruits, vegetables and lean proteins and high in sugars may create a more conducive atmosphere for cancer to grow.3.    Age of first sexual encounter. Women who engage in sexual activity under age 16 are more likely to develop cervical cancer.4.    certain strains of HPV. HPV is a virus carried by millions of Americans. however, only certain strains of HPV may lead to cervical cancer, therefore it is crucial to get an annual pap smear. 5.    Weakened immune system. those with a weakened immune system because of other illnesses, such as HIV, are more likely to develop cervical cancer.6.    Oral contraceptives. while oral contraceptives have not definitively been linked to cervical cancer, it is believe that women who have taken oral contraceptives in excess of five years may increase their odds for cervical cancer.7.    Economics. Women of lower economic means are less likely to have annual pap smears to catch cervical cancer before it becomes widespread or fatal.

Paula, 35, recently came into my office complaining of pain in her vagina and pelvis.

She had been experiencing chronic discomfort with sensations of stinging, itching, irritation and rawness for many months.

Some women also experience burning pain across the pubic bone, shooting pain through the buttocks or thighs and stabbing pain in the vagina.

Paula decided to try a naturopathic approach when a friend of hers also received benefit for a similar condition.

This condition is called Vulvodynia or Vulvar Vestibulitis Syndrome depending on the specific location of the pain. there is much emotional distress that accompanies this condition not only because conventional medicine may have little help to offer, but also a women’s sexual life declines due to pain.

It may have a sudden onset after a vaginal yeast infection, after medical procedures to the vulva or changes in sexual activity. in most cases the vulvar pain becomes chronic, lasting for months to years.

I started with a general assessment including a physical exam including blood work, EAV (Electroacupuncture) testing for underlying organ weaknesses, an evaluation of her diet, stress, exercise and hydration and an evaluation of her food sensitivities.

The biggest underlying culprit is candida or yeast overgrowth in the body though there are few studies to confirm this. Another possible cause is an autoimmunity factor. However, treating the candida works clinically in most cases.

Candida or yeast overgrowth affects over 50 percent of the patients I see to some degree or other. This results in a dysbiosis or mix of unhealthy bacteria in the gut flora that affects the the reproductive organs of both men and women. (In men it can cause “jock itch” and chronic prostatitis)

This dysbiosis can generate foreign substances and toxins in the gut that penetrate the lining of the intestines creating a “leaky gut syndrome.”

When these foreign substances enter the blood stream the body sets up an immune reaction to them resulting in a number of possible symptoms: diarrhea, heartburn, reflux, bloating, fatigue, hives and in this case vulvadynia.

In vulvadynia often fungal cultures are negative and it is theorized that the pain may be caused by hypersensitivity to the candida fungas.

Paula wanted to know what causes the overgrowth of candida in the body? well, she had taken many antibiotics in her life for various infections and she had used the birth control pill for many years as well. She was never breast fed as a baby so her intestinal tract did not get a good inoculation of the proper bacteria at a young age.

She also had a terrible craving for sweets. on the EAV machine she tested a 10/10 for candida overgrowth and I got her started on a three-month candida program right away.
