Let’s face it, there are some things in life that are just plain hard to share and talk about, even to close friends, family and coworkers.

Due to feelings of embarrassment and shame, chronic diseases such as Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis go unacknowledged and continue to negatively affect millions of lives.

these diseases, also known as Inflammatory Bowel Diseases (IBD), can harm one’s ability to lead a normal life both socially and physically.

Jo Bloom, an IBD support group facilitator in Las Cruces since 2006, said she has seen people of all different ages and backgrounds feel “isolated and alone” from being unaware of what is happening or what to do.

“People just want to be able to talk about it, share horror stories and share the small victories,” Bloom said.

there is no known cause or cure of these chronic intestinal disorders, but it is manageable and treatable on an individual basis.

In addition to discussing the everyday dealings with IBD, Bloom said the support group members discuss doctors and treatments that have worked for them, and may be helpful to others.

“the first thing I would tell someone who has IBD is to keep a food chart,” Bloom said. “Eating the right foods won’t make it go away, but eating the wrong foodscan make it worse.”

the most common symptoms people with Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis suffer from are frequent and uncontrollable bowel movements as well as excruciating intestinal pain.

according to the Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation of America (CCFA), IBD is a biological disorder, which is not caused by emotions such as anxiety and stress, although these factors may worsen symptoms.

Las Cruces resident Carmella Myers was diagnosed with ulcerative colitis in 2001, and started attending the support groups, where she said she was more optimistic than most.

“I just see so many other things like cancer and lung disease that can kill people,” Myers said. “as far as I know, I’m not going to die from this, because it is treatable.”

unfortunately, Myers said, it is younger people who don’t deal with the issue well and need the most help and support.

“Parents will come with their children to seek help, and it’s really comforting for them to be open and frank about what is happening,” Myers said.

according to Bloom, finding the right doctor to create an appropriate treatment plan is just as important as telling the people in your life what is happening.

“unfortunately, it can be a very expensive disease because you can’t just go (to the doctor) once and find your magic cure,” Bloom said. “everyone is different.”

the ulcerative colitis andCrohn’s disease support group meets from 3 to 5 p.m. the second Sunday of each month in the Community Education room ofMountainView Regional Medical Center.

AN Enfield hotelier who moved to Spain with her husband to enjoy a retirement has died after contracting a deadly disease from a sandfly.

Susan Hughes, 67, who moved to Malaga with husband Tony in 2004, died of black fever – a parasitic disease extremely rare in the UK – which she got in August through the saliva of the fly which had bitten her.

After being rushed to hospital, doctors gave her a blood transfusion but were unable to save her. The mother-of-two passed away on September 11.

She developed black blotches on her arms and chest and scabs on the roof of her mouth – typical symptoms of the deadly disease, which is the second-biggest parasitic killer in the world, after malaria.

Mr Hughes said that his wife’s immune system was vulnerable because of a liver transplant she had in 1983 – she had been given just six weeks to live before having the operation.

He said: “They tried everything but she couldn’t fight it because her immune system was low from the liver transplant.

“It’s just a shame we came to Spain for a good life, and yet if we’d stayed in the UK she’d have still been alive.

“She did have a chance to enjoy it and we had a good life together – it’s just a shame it was so short.”

The couple met in Wolverhampton in 1983, just months before she had the liver operation that was to grant her 28 extra years of life.

After the operation the couple moved to Wales and ran a hotel in Llandudno, Wales, until deciding to take early retirement in Spain – spending two years living in a caravan while their house in Malaga was built.

It’s not a pleasant subject, but the community must come to grips with African-Americans’ shockingly high incidence of sexually transmitted diseases, a health official says.

“When it comes to sexually transmitted disease, people tend to shy away from the subject because it involves talking about sex,” Dr. David Holcombe, regional administrator and medical director for Region VI of the state Office of Public Health, said Tuesday at a forum in Alexandria on STDs.

“The only way to let people know of the dangers of STDs is to get the message out about them. There’s no shame in talking about ways to prevent sexually transmitted diseases,” Holcombe said.

Not only does Louisiana lead the nation in the rate of syphilis and rank high in the incidence of other STDs, but African-Americans have much higher rates than their white counterparts, officials said.

Health officials and community leaders gathered Tuesday in the Alexandria Museum of Art for the forum titled “Closing the Gap: Addressing STD Disparities in the African-American Community.” They sought to spread the message on the dangers of STDs, particularly in the black community.

The forum was a collaboration with Central Louisiana AIDS Support Services and the Office of Public Health.

In addition to being first in syphilis incidence, Louisiana is No. 2 in the nation in gonorrhea, No. 3 in chlamydia and No. 4 in HIV, officials said.

A PowerPoint presentation was given on the number of STD cases.

Sexually transmitted diseases affect 15 million people each year in the United States and cost

$8.4 billion in medical costs and lost wages. By age 25, one-third of all sexually active young adults will have been infected by one or more STDs, Holcombe said.

Kevin Bonton, an Office of Public Health disease intervention specialist, talked about the number of gonorrhea, chlamydia and syphilis cases in Rapides Parish, citing statistics from the Louisiana Office of Public Health 2009 STD annual report.

Females and males ages 15 to 29 carry the burden of STD infections, and gonorrhea rates are 20 times higher in blacks than in other minorities, Bonton said.

He said individuals should discuss their sexual histories with their partners before engaging in any sexual act.

“We see a lot of African-American women getting tested for STDs but not African-American men,” Bonton said.

“So many African-American men have multiple sex partners. We recommend getting tested when a person has multiple sex partners.”

Chaquetta Johnson, Office of Public Health regional nurse consultant, showed how a female infected with an STD could pass the symptoms to her unborn child.

Johnson also talked about Pelvic Inflammatory Disease and cervical cancer.

“Eighty percent of sexually active women will be tested positive for HPV (which can lead to genital warts) in their lifetime. Congenital syphilis is on the rise 23 percent between 2005 to 2008,” Johnson said.

“I think factors like living conditions and education can play an important role in STDs. you have to educate people on STDs, and that comes from community organizations getting involved to eliminate the problem.”

Sandra Bright, nurse educator at the Huey P. Long Medical Center facility at England Airpark, said African-Americans represent 14 percent of the U.S. population, but half of HIV victims are African-Americans.

As of Dec. 31, 2009, 30,876 individuals were diagnosed with HIV-AIDS in Louisiana, Bright said.

She said 78 percent of the HIV victims in Louisiana are black.

“This is due to factors like access to care, social, economic and cultural factors. the African-American community must educate in places like home and church. Sororities and fraternities can also help educate on diseases that are killing the black population,” Bright said.

Who Suffers from Depression?

Every type of person suffers depression. People from all cultures or socioeconomic classes suffer depression. Men are also 4 times more likely to take their own life, which makes their depression even more troublesome. Hormones that causes puberty and menopause, pregnancy and menstruation can also create the chemical imbalances which lead to many kinds of depression. changes in body chemistry affect both men and women as their grow older, so even people who have never had depression can find symptoms appearing as their body chemistry changes. For these people, treating the chemical imbalance can have profound results in the quality of their lives.

Depression is not always caused by chemical imbalances in the brain, though. Depression is really a collection of symptoms, which can be brought on from one person to the next by wildly different causes. Anxiety, isolation, the loss of loved ones, or stress can cause depression. Follow the depression management tips below to see whether you can treat your own depression. if this doesn’t work, get psychological or medical assistance.

Change Your Diet

Eating the proper foods is more than just about weight loss and weight gain. It’s more than just feeling good or getting your body to function properly. these are all incredibly important concerns, and could be contributing to your depression. But eating a different set of foods changes your body chemistry.

Your mom used to tell you, “You are what you eat”. if all your eat are fried foods, processed cheese, and desserts, a large percentage of your body is going to be built from those foods. For the sake of depression management, the most important of those is sugar intake.

Scientists have linked depression to low serotonin levels in your brain. Sugar temporarily raises the serotonin levels in your brain. Serotonin has been shown to function in the regulation of human sleep, muscle contraction, memory, learning, appetite and mood. when we eat sugar, it lifts our mood and suppresses our appetite. Unfortunately, this is only a temporary boost. when we come down off our sugar high, our mood crashes (and our body is apt to tell us we need to eat again, whether we do or not).

Regulating your sugar intake therefore keeps you from having unnecessary swings in your mood cycle, dominated by the down mood swings. so if you want to manage you want to manage depression without pills, eat fewer sugary foods.

What to Change Your Diet To

To replace your sugar intake, eat proper foods like vegetables and fruits (which contain healthier levels/types of sugar) and take a multivitamin regularly. when you have a well-balanced diet, your body undergoes wild swings in body chemistry and blood sugar levels, which makes you healthier and makes you feel better.
