a LEGAL secretary is summoning up support for a cervical cancer charity’s sponsored walk, after fighting her own battle against the condition last year.

Mum-of-one Karen Holroyd is urging others to join her at Barry’s Porthkerry Park next month and take a big step towards raising funds and awareness for Jo’s Cervical Cancer Trust, as its annual 5km walks arrive in Wales for the first time.

Karen, who lives with her partner Anthony Frost and young son in Barry, will embark on the 5km Welsh Walk for Fun on Sunday, June 12.

Karen, 31, said: “I was diagnosed with cervical cancer in August.

“I had been having problems for a while and it had gone undetected.

“I was referred to the University Hospital of Wales where I had a biopsy and within four weeks I was starting treatment.

“I was at stage two by the time it was detected.

“I couldn’t believe it.

“You never expect it to happen to you.

“I’d looked on the internet at my symptoms and thought no, because they say it’s more common in older people,” she added.

“It was a shock.”

Karen underwent chemotherapy, radiotherapy, and brachytherapy and experienced side effects including exhaustion and a DVT, and she still takes medication.

but she has returned to her job at JA Hughes solicitors and is undertaking a law degree, with the hope of becoming a solicitor practising in family law.

Karen, who is also urging women to go for smear tests when invited, said: “I really want to raise awareness because when I finished my treatment I sat home thinking I wanted to show my support for everybody.

“This is a great way to raise funds for the UK’s only charity dedicated to women and the people close to them dealing with cervical cancer and abnormalities.

“But most importantly, it’s a chance to remember, to celebrate and to have fun.”

Zumba instructor Christian Bullen will lead a pre-event warm-up, and participants all get a medal.

If you are thinking there is a serious chance the dog may be infected then alert your neighbor of the situation. They should take it to the vet to be quarantined and watched for a week or so. this way they can see if the dog shows signs of rabies. the only way to test for rabies is to test the euthanized animal.

Edit- please don't assume the neighbors dog has rabies just from seeing the dog foaming at the mouth. many things cause dogs to do that.

When Andrew Frankish became slightly breathless carrying his bins out, his GP initially suggested it might just be a bug.

But after a month the 38-year-old still felt out of sorts and asked to be referred to a specialist. Andrew was astonished by what the expert told him — his lack of breath was due to a heart attack.

In fact he’d had not one, but two — with no obvious symptoms.

like most people, Andrew associated heart attacks with high drama — people suffering crushing pain and clutching their chest in agony while collapsing to the floor.

In his surgeon’s opinion, however, he’d suffered what is known as a silent heart attack — where symptoms are vague or even non-existent.

This can be just as serious as a ‘classic’ heart attack — sometimes worse, as the damage can go undetected for many years, with worrying consequences.

There are around 124,000 heart attacks recorded in the UK each year — and experts believe thousands more go undetected.

‘It’s estimated that between 25 and 30 per cent of all heart attacks are silent,’ explains Dr ever Grech, a consultant cardiologist at the Northern General Hospital and BMI Thornbury Hospital in Sheffield.

‘with silent heart attacks, you don’t get the typical crushing chest pain. Some people may get vague symptoms such as feeling generally unwell for a few hours, accompanied by a bit of jaw ache as the pain can spread, or what they think is indigestion, but nothing like the classic symptoms.’

Yet despite the lack of symptoms the heart can still be damaged. any heart attack usually begins with a sudden blockage in one of the coronary arteries that supplies the heart muscle with blood, causing part of the muscle to die.

Once the heart is damaged and scarred from a heart attack, it can’t repair itself.

‘If any heart attack symptoms go unnoticed then it’s not unusual for someone to go on and suffer heart failure as a result,’ says Professor Peter Weissberg, medical director at the British Heart Foundation.

‘in fact, unrecognised heart attacks are often only picked up when the patient presents with symptoms of heart failure, such as breathlessness, and we track backwards to work out why.’

Andrew, from Nottinghamshire, is the managing director of a financial services company. He only realised something was wrong when everyday tasks suddenly became more arduous. 

‘I found myself short of breath when I took the bins out or carried the kids upstairs at night,’ he recalls.

‘I couldn’t understand it, as I play quite a lot of football and squash so have always considered myself to be quite fit and healthy. I’ve never smoked and I am by no means a heavy drinker.  

‘at first, I presumed because I was nearly 40 that everything was slowing down and it was going to be harder to keep in shape. But as the weeks went by, I felt increasingly out of sorts.’

Andrew’s GP suggested he might be suffering from a bug. But four weeks later, he felt no better. ‘It wasn’t anything that stopped me from working, but I just knew I didn’t feel right.’

Because heart problems run in his family — his father survived a heart attack at 51 and two of his brothers have had heart issues — he asked to be referred to a specialist under his private medical care.

‘My wife Verona thought I was being paranoid and my GP was actually quite sarcastic, but I didn’t want to take any chances.’

It’s a decision that probably saved his life. Referred to a cardiologist in Sheffield in January last year, Andrew had an exercise electrocardiogram (ECG) test, where patients run on a treadmill to see how their heart copes.

‘after a few minutes I began to feel quite uncomfortable and breathless and had to stop much earlier than the average person my age — I was told I should be able to run for ten to 15 minutes. that really worried me.’

Andrew then had an angiogram — where a flexible tube is inserted to check for narrowed or blocked arteries. He was completely unprepared for the news that followed.

‘the doctor said that two out of the three major arteries in my heart were blocked. the third was also significantly narrowed.

‘I was told I’d almost certainly suffered two heart attacks. and I was heading for a third, and probably fatal, one. No one could say when I’d had the attacks, but it’s likely my arteries had been blocked for a few years.’

Despite his diagnosis, Andrew could not recall any previous occasion when he felt pain.

‘I can only think that one of the heart attacks might have happened when I was playing Wii (a computer game where players mimic real-life exercise) with the family and I thought I’d pulled a muscle in my chest from over-exertion.’

But why do some people like Andrew feel nothing when they suffer a heart attack?

Usually in a heart attack the body produces chemicals that then affect the nerves, causing symptoms such as chest pain.

In some cases the nerves aren’t stimulated, perhaps because fewer chemicals are released.

‘the problem with heart attacks is that when it comes to a patient noticing them there are various shades of grey,’ says Prof Weissberg.

‘I always ask my patients whose ECG shows they’ve had an unrecognised heart attack to really think back.

‘they can normally remember a time when they had an odd sensation but put it down to indigestion or the odd twinge.’

Occasionally, people don’t feel a heart attack because over time the heart has successfully managed to compensate for the lack of blood supply by using other coronary blood vessels.

This appears to be what happened in Andrew’s case.

‘Fortunately for him, the little capillaries around the blockage had created their own bypass around the artery. Effectively, the heart had done its own bypass,’ explains Dr Grech, who treated Andrew.

‘There are some patients, however, who have no idea they’ve suffered a heart attack until they present with symptoms such as lethargy and severe breathlessness — and we discover they are suffering heart failure following the undiagnosed heart attack.’

So who is most at risk? Diabetics, because high blood sugar levels can damage nerve endings so they are less likely to feel tell-tale chest pain, according to studies.

And Dr Grech says evidence suggests that women and those over 65 are also more at risk.

But while heart attacks are linked to heart disease, smoking and high cholesterol, for Andrew it was his genes that let him down.

‘Family history is a very important independent risk factor, regardless of how healthy you may think you are,’ explains Dr Grech.

‘Patients like Andrew who have a parent or other first-degree relatives with premature coronary disease (less than 55 years) will have to be extremely careful.’

Andrew also believes his weight didn’t help. at 6ft 3in and 17st, he needs to lose about 3st to be considered a healthy weight.

‘I know I am overweight, but I didn’t think I was heading for a coronary at 37,’ he says.

‘I’m sure there are lots of men like me who think they’re “not that bad” — hopefully my experience will make them think about their health.’

Fortunately — and unusually — Andrew has not suffered any severe long-term damage. He was lucky his blocked arteries could be opened up using stents (small metal tubes) rather than undergoing major heart surgery.

Like all patients with stents, he now takes blood-thinning drugs to prevent clots from forming around them. 

‘I feel great now,’ says Andrew. ‘I can run around the garden with my three-year-old son and six-year-old daughter and have a lot more energy. I feel very lucky that my problems were caught.’

Stephen, 37, said when their first child, four-year-old Eden, was diagnosed with cystic fibrosis, the pair had no idea they were both carriers of the “faulty gene” which causes it.

He said: “There is no history of it in either of our families so we didn’t suspect a thing.”

The couple, from East Lothian, decided on the treatment when trying for a second child, as they said the one-in-four chance of them having another baby with the condition was too big a risk.

Lee, 40, said: “We probably spent the first three years in shock, and trying to make sure we could deal with Eden’s symptoms.

“Although she is generally quite well we have to be careful she doesn’t catch any infections, as her immune system isn’t as able to fight infection.

“Having two children with cystic fibrosis can mean they constantly keep passing infections back and forth.

“We decided we couldn’t risk our children’s health like that.

“Looking after one child who has cystic fibrosis can be tough at times, but if you had two children with the condition, trying to ensure both were kept well and didn’t cross-infect each other would be much more difficult.

“We knew we wanted another child, and were really pleased when we got the opportunity to undergo this treatment.

“We were really lucky that it worked for us first time. I was keen to get things moving as my biological clock was ticking.”

Stephen added: “We’ve been lucky in many ways because no other children at Eden’s school have cystic fibrosis, so the chance of cross-infection there is low.

“but we always wanted her to have a younger brother or sister while keeping them both as healthy as possible.”

The Western General Hospital in Edinburgh is Scotland’s only hospital to offer the pre-implantation testing, and can take up to 15 couples a year.

Around one in 25 people carries the faulty gene, but it is only when two carriers have a child together that the condition can be passed on.

There is a one in four chance that a child born from two carriers of the faulty gene will have cystic fibrosis, with a one in two chance of it being a carrier.

Pre-implantation genetic diagnosis involves the testing of embryos, created through IVF treatment, to ensure they are free of genetic conditions, before they are implanted.

Dr Mary Porteous, a consultant in clinical genetics for NHS Lothian, carried out the genetic testing for the treatment.

She said: “it is fantastic that we are able to offer this treatment for couples who are affected by single-gene defects, and I am pleased that Lee and Stephen were the first couple to benefit.

Shanel Cornille is going to enjoy Christmas a whole lot more this time round.

On December 23 last year the Hamilton woman was diagnosed with cervical cancer.

But after fighting through the disease, the 29-year-old is back to full fitness and is set to prove her oncologist wrong when she returns to triathlon again sooner than she expected, starting with the Port of Tauranga Half Ironman in two weeks.

Dr Herman van der Vyver had told Cornille she probably wouldn’t be competitive for two years and that she should take it easy while recovering. But a determined Cornille told him she was out to prove him wrong, which he was happy to hear.

Cornille registered for the Tauranga event on the day entries opened, just three months after she finished her treatment with the race date adding to her motivation.

But it’s a been a long road since that first diagnosis last December.

Home no more than a month after competing at the Long Distance Triathlon World Championships in Perth, Cornille, who was living in Tauranga at the time, got a massive shock when delivered the news that she had cancer.

Her initial reaction was “disbelief”‘.

“That I was supposedly so fit and healthy and that that could happen to me.

“It shows you that cancer just doesn’t look at who you are, it doesn’t miss anyone out. I hadn’t had any symptoms, I don’t smoke and I have a really healthy lifestyle, so it hit home that this can happen to anyone and it’s pretty scary.”

Cornille moved back to Hamilton and had to endure six weeks of intense chemotherapy and radiation at Waikato Hospital.

Last Christmas was spent in Christchurch with family but they made an effort to ignore the cancer topic because Cornille didn’t want it to dampen the festive spirit.

“My sister had just had a baby and that was all exciting and so I didn’t want to bring down the enjoyment of Christmas with the family,” she said.

being single and going through the ordeal by herself was tough, but Cornille’s family, which includes three sisters and a brother, played a huge part in getting her through.

“They all had turns sitting with me at chemo and coming to my specialist appointments. they took time off work when they could to help support me.

“I think it brought us a lot closer together as well.”

Another person who she absorbed motivation from was rower Fi Paterson, who also went through cancer and returned to sport.

Cornille was introduced to Paterson through a friend and they met in Cambridge for coffee a few times.

“It was just really nice to have someone to talk to who had so many similarities to me,” Cornille said.

During her treatment Cornille managed to get some work as a physiotherapist a couple of afternoons a week at Lisa Hansen Physiotherapy, and now she is there fulltime.

a month after her treatment started in February she began running again to maintain some fitness. But some days she could hardly find any energy as she lost a lot of muscle mass and her red and white blood cells, which are used to transport oxygen around the body, were down at low levels.

“I’d try and go for a little jog some days when I was feeling good. Some days I felt really good and other days I felt crap.

“I’m not one to sit back and go `I can’t do that’, I always think I should be able to do it.

“I probably did underestimate the effect it had on my body.”

and the severity of Cornille’s condition didn’t completely register with her initially and she never feared the worst.

“Even right from the start it never actually crossed my mind that this was something I could die from. I always had the attitude that I was going to beat cancer and not the other way round.” Now she has to have six-monthly MRI scans with her specialist and it will be another five years or so before she can be considered clear.

“So I guess it’s always a bit of a scary thought to think `will it come back’ but I’ve taken the attitude that you’ve got to live your life to the full and have no regrets. This process has shown me you never know what’s around the corner.”

The harshest outcome of the illness for Cornille is that her fertility has been greatly affected and for someone wanting kids, she is going to find it a lot harder.

She has visited fertility specialists and had some of her eggs harvested so they can be implanted later when she’s ready to start a family.

Cornille’s race on January 8 will be her fourth half ironman and she has also been accepted as part of triathlete Sam Warriner’s Sweat7 team made up of seven women of various abilities, who Warriner will coach toward the national triathlon championships in Wellington in March.

Last time at Tauranga Cornille was fourth in the women’s 25-29 years age group and she has ambitions to again be in the top five.

“I’ve got to appreciate everything from here,” Cornille said. “I am just lucky to be out there competing.

“But I’m still very competitive by nature and I don’t want to be out there just to race, I want to be out there to do well.”

Cornille said the key message to other cancer sufferers was to stay positive.

“I think that is a huge thing. your state of mind is so important through treatment.”

Now she is helping to raise funds for the new Zealand Gynaecological Cancer Foundation to help prevent other women from going through what she did.

It was unclear if he had died from the effects of his illness or from another cause with Hawaii’s Star Advertiser reporting that his death was being investigated as a possible methadone overdose. the newspaper said the Tarrant County medical examiner had found methadone, and other medications, in Irons’s hotel room.

Australian rookie Owen Wright was due to surf against Irons in the first round of the event in Puerto Rico, but said he was not surprised when the triple world champion withdrew. He said both he and Irons had contracted an illness at the tour event in Portugal.

"I almost didn’t turn up for this event myself," Wright said from his hotel room in Puerto Rico. "there had been a bout of this going round from Portugal. it didn’t hit me as a surprise that Andy was sick."

Wright said fellow Australian Chris Davidson, South African Travis Logie and Kelly Slater’s girlfriend Kalani Miller had also been struck down by symptoms including exhaustion, fever and headaches.

"From the symptoms I heard he had, there’s a massive possibility that Andy had a similar thing," Wright said.

Wright said there had been a big storm while the tour was in Portugal, which had washed the local rivers out, which might have increased mosquito activity.

Wright said he hadn’t had his condition diagnosed, but was now seeing a doctor. He said the mood at the event site was one of shock.

"It’s such heavy news," Wright said. "Everyone is really shaken up. Everyone is just speechless. I always looked up to him as a hero. I still do."

Retired former world champion Mark Occhilupo received the news via a phone call from compatriot Joel Parkinson.

"I just broke down," Occhilupo told Fox Sports. "I went and saw my wife and couldn’t stop crying. I’m flying to Hawaii on Saturday, the funeral is probably going to be one of the biggest ones in history because he was loved by everyone.

"He was such a vibrant, lovely person to be around. one of my best mates.

"It’s really, really heart-wrenching."

He said Irons had previously contracted dengue fever on a trip to Bali. Medical experts say the mosquito-borne disease is far more dangerous if contracted a second time.

The most serious haemorrhagic strain has a death rate of up to 20 per cent if left untreated, according to the World Health Organisation.

In Puerto Rico, the Association of Surfing Professionals suspended its tour event yesterday as officials and surfers discussed whether it would be appropriate to continue with the contest.

ASP chief executive Brodie Carr struggled to hold his composure as he described the sense of loss within the close-knit community.

"We’re all deeply, deeply saddened and our thoughts go out to all his family and friends and it’s a sad day for surfing when one of our tribesman and friends has been lost," Carr said.

"(His partner) Lyndie is pregnant and due to give birth to their baby boy in less than a month."

Irons, who grew up on Kauai, Hawaii, won three world titles from 2002-2004, and 20 pro tour events.

He was known for his powerful style, which he combined with a respectable bag of aerial manoeuvres, and was the only surfer to consistently challenge nine-times world champion Kelly Slater in the last decade.

Let's say someone was..I don't know, donating blood or something. and the doctor or whoever was taking the blood took way too much. I know that wouldn't happen, but it's just an example. what are some symptoms that person would have?

Lightheaded, dizzy, sweating, pale, rapid breathing and fast heart beat. with drastic blood loss the person would be cold, clammy, shivery and might pass out.

Pallor, faintness, palpitations, shock, death!
