KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT) – a handful of employees at a Market Square restaurant were rushed to the hospital Saturday after leaks of carbon monoxide.

The Knoxville Fire Department was called to Soccer Taco on Market Square around 11:15 a.m. for a medical call. when firefighters got on scene, they found a construction worker overcome by carbon monoxide poisoning. The worker had been using a gas-powered concrete saw.

Four employees were also taken to UT Medical Center for treatment. a reading was taken by a Haz-Mat Unit of 200 ppm (parts per million). a normal reading in a business the size of Soccer Taco should register up to 29 ppm.

Firefighters used a “positive pressure fan” to ventilate the toxic fumes.

Signs of carbon monoxide poisoning are: headaches, dizziness and flu-like symptoms. Exposure at over 100 ppm can be deadly.
