Over the last two months, I've had so many problems. it started with my recurring colds. I get a cold once a month, and it generally gives off the symptoms of chronic sinusitis (entire left side of head is in pain – teeth, ear, eye pressure, runny nose, etc). Doc says I do not have sinusitis, but prescribed me flonase anyway.

Then came on blepharitis, with occasional flareups. took me 8 weeks to rid myself of it after doing the treatment every single day.
Then comes on the urinary tract infection, which is not responding to antibiotics.
Then comes on another sinus infection.

Right now, I have 4 things – Sinusitis, Blepharitis, a UTI, and a stomach flu.

What the hell is causing this? do I have the scurvy? I spend all of my time indoors, so could it be vitamin d deficiency?

If you did not have your blood levels checked lately, I would advise you to.

You may have a more generalized condition that makes you more susceptible to the ailments you listed. for one reason or another, you may have a weakened immune system. You should try doing things that will bolster your immune system, like adding more vitamin C to your diet for example. Talk to your doctor and ask him what are some other things you can do to strengthen your ability to fight off these infections.

You do need to make sure you're taking multivitamins every day, and lots of folic acid too, about 1600mg a day. at the moment, you're body is very weak.

I had an allergic reaction to amoxicillin that i took for a sinus infection and had an allergic reaction to it. i'm not itchy any more but my mom is really getting on me about taking a medicine my doctor said was optional for me since my skin is still red and blotchy. i'm sick of taking all these medications for symptom after symptom for almost a month so i was wondering if there was a way to get rid of the redness so i wont have to take the medication. i'm not itchy, just red.

nope, you either take the medication or you wait it out.

Many people are familiar with sinus pressure symptoms.  It may begin as a headache in the middle of the forehead.  It could be pressure felt at the temples.  The pressure may make the eyes feel as if they are about to pop out or like there is fluid in the ears.  If you feel this way you may be wondering if there is help.

There can be several different causes of sinus pressure, but most are related to some type of blockage that does not allow these cavities to drain properly.  The blockage may be related to a sinus infection, allergies or a plethora of other causes.  Most of these causes are related to an irritant that causes the tissues surrounding the opening to the cavity to swell and prevent fluids from draining correctly.  Another cause may be an over production of fluids like when you are suffering from a cold.

Many doctors today are prescribing nasal steroids.  The steroids have a build upon effect.  They are generally used before the beginning of the allergy season so that the effect is already built up before the season begins.  these steroids are a preventative option for many patients. 

Once only available by prescription, Claritin is now available in many places without the doctor’s orders.  while this medication uses a different pathway than that of the steroids, it also can be used as a build upon medication that is effective as preventative medication for allergies.  in addition, this medication can be used in combination with the steroids.

In the cases of severe sinus infections, sometimes doctors prescribe antibiotics to fight the infection.  there are some serious health problems that are developing from the overuse of antibiotics, so individuals will want to consult with the doctor about the benefits as well as risks of this medication.

There are many herbal remedies as well for sinus infections that work suprisingly well.  you may also want to consider alternative treatments to find relief for sinus pressure symptoms.  Natural remedies do not cause the unwanted side effects described above but are just as effective if not more so.

First of all let me say…I’m sorry!

Having a sinus infection is a miserable experience.  particularly one you’ve had for any length of time.  and I know from personal experience.

I had never had a sinus infection before so when I finally got one it took me by surprise.  It went on for weeks.  I had extreme head pain.  was sensitive to light and if I blew my nose just perfectly I could hear (and feel) a little ‘release’ in my nose.  It almost sounded like a slow, high pitched tire leak.

That would give me a little bit of relief but then it would build back up and I was to square one.

Eventually, with the help of a same day care doctor I discovered that I did indeed have a “raging” sinus infection (in his words).  but, enough about me.

With what you are telling me it’s frankly, hard to say if it is a sinus infection.  but, with the general symptoms you are listing there is a good chance it’s a sinus infection.  also, because you said you had a cold it makes me think it’s a sinus infection as they often follow a cold or a flu infection.

But, to help you (and your doctor) let’s ask a few more questions and look at a true sinus infection in a little more detail.

Acute vs. Chronic Symptoms

From what you’re describing you appear to be in the acute phase since it has been occurring less than 4 weeks.  A chronic sinus infection would run out past eight weeks.

Also, you have more than just one ‘sinus’ – as the name confusingly implies.  the area that you are describing, above your eyes, is very commonly affected.  but, without getting into too many specifics lets just focus on some of the more common symptoms that you might experience with a sinus infection and that way it will give you a better idea of your next course of action.

Common General Symptoms

While the following tend to be seen in most sinus infections they may not all be present at the same time.

• Nasal discharge:  Because sinus infections often follow colds or flu’s nasal discharge can be common and actually thicken and become worse over time.
• Chronic Dry Cough
• Pressure in the face
• Teeth pressure (particularly as you bend over)
• Pain around the eyes (especially if a child has a sinus infection)
• Bad breath
• Post nasal drip (where nose discharge literally drips back into your throat causing you to clear your throat constantly)
• Fever
• Fatigue
• Lack of response to antihistamines or decongestants

Sinus Infection Treatment

I’m pretty confident that your doctor will likely conclude that you do have a sinus infection and will likely prescribe you some antibiotics to treat it like Amoxicillin.

Now, while antibiotics will likely bring you relief in my experience they aren’t a long term solution because they aren’t fixing the actual cause.

Without getting into too much detail your sinuses are basically air filled pockets in your skull.  and, as you learned above, with the right conditions (say a cold or a flu) they can become inhabited with bacteria, fungus or viruses.  They set up camp in your sinuses and make you miserable.

So, while treating the actual bug that is causing the sinus infection is helpful, unless you control your overall health and keep the sinuses clear you may likely have a reinfection with your next cold.  That’s why the most helpful thing for me to prevent (and even treat a mild sinus infection) has been sinus irrigation.

It keeps your sinuses flushed out and makes it difficult for bacteria or other bugs to call it home.  plus, it’s extremely safe and approved by a lot of ear, nose and throat doctors.  but, just to make sure, discuss it with your doctor.

I’m a big fan because it helped me when prescription medications couldn’t.  That’s why when I feel a cold coming on now I immediately start irrigating my sinuses.

i feel lightheaded all day and have allergies. i was wondering if a sinus infection could cause this and what are the symptoms of a sinus infection so i could tell if i have one. thanks

I am on penicillin and am concerned that I don't feel that much better. I had been told by a relative that improvements should be remarkable and immediate, even after a dose or two. That has not been the case.

I have been searching the internet and have not found much information on strep throat from the PATIENT'S point of view – e.g., what he/she might feel after taking antibiotics, and what the perceived effects and benefits should be.

Days 1 and 2 I felt sore throat, ear pressure, swollen glands, sinus infection, no coughing. Day 3 I went to the doctor and tested positive for strep (rapid test). That evening I took my first dose of 2x daily 500 mg penicillin VK (ten day course). Now is the morning of Day 5 (only 4 doses so far – meds started in the evening of Day 3 ) and I feel about the same. Given that it is Memorial Day weekend, do I have the doctor paged to get me on something else? Or does this require patience?

You certainly should have noticed a drastic difference by day 5. you should have the doctor paged or go to a walk-in clinic that is open to get another prescription. since this antibiotic isn't effective against the strep, you're basically walking around with an infection that's just getting worse. One of the main complications of untreated strep throat is meningitis. Call your doctor immediately.

i've had strep throat twice. i did not not take penicilian. i drunk green tea with chinese honey and in two days, it was gone!! you need to buy the green tea with the chinese symbols on it.

PEPPERELL — the Kelley family shares its story openly. they are fortunate now, but in 2008, it didn’t seem so when Trent, now 8, was diagnosed with T-cell lymphoma.

Lymphoma is a cancer of the white blood cells. It is the most common blood cancer and the third most common cancer of childhood, according to the Lymphoma Research Foundation.

For Trent, it began with swelling in his face and increased difficulty breathing. at first glance, his parents Jon and Rachel said, he was believed to have a sinus infection or a respiratory issue.

Today, Trent is a cancer survivor in remission. He smiles like the happiest of 8-year-olds.

As a way of giving back and to help with the need for special blood transfusions specific to children, the Kelley family hosted a blood drive Saturday at the Pepperell Community Center, their third blood drive in Pepperell, and 12th overall.

With his dad, his mom, Rachel, and his sister, Reagan, 7, at his side, Trent greeted friends and residents as they arrived to register.

“It was a very successful day,” said Jon Kelley, “with the drive bringing in 54 qualified donors. With each donation reaching four children, the overall impact is that much greater.”

According to Jon and Rachel, the long-term prognosis for Trent is very good. half the battle is attitude, they say, and Trent has an incredibly positive one.
