hepatitis (hepatitis plural) involves injury to the liver characterized by the presence of inflammatory cells in the tissue of the body. The name is from ancient Greek Hepar (????) liver or hepato-(?????-),, sense and the suffix-itis, meaning “inflammation” (c. 1727) [1]. The condition can be self-limiting, healing on its own, or may progress to scarring of the liver. Hepatitis is acute when it lasts less than six months and chronic when it persists longer. A group of viruses known as hepatitis viruses cause most cases of liver damage worldwide. Hepatitis can also be due to toxins (especially alcohol), other infections or autoimmune processes.

how hepatitis affects the liver?

liver breaks down waste products in the blood. When the liver is inflamed, it does a good job of getting rid of waste. A waste product in blood, called bilirubin (such as “billy-roo-bin”) begins to accumulate in the blood and tissues when the liver is not functioning well. The bilirubin makes the skin of a person with hepatitis turn a yellow-orange. This is called jaundice (say “john-des “).

What are the signs and symptoms?

hepatitis infection causes inflammation of the liver, which means the liver becomes inflamed and damaged and begins to lose its ability to function. People with hepatitis-like symptoms often caused by viral infections, such as weakness, fatigue and nausea. because the symptoms of hepatitis are similar to other conditions, it is easy for people to be confused with other illnesses. In addition, people with hepatitis A can not show any symptoms of infection, so infection is not diagnosed.

What causes it?

hepatitis B virus (HBV) is transmitted from person to person through contact with infected body fluids such as blood. because chronic carriers of HBV are often unaware they have the virus, they may transmit the disease to others unknowingly. Injecting illegal drugs with contaminated needles or unprotected sexual contact with an infected person are the most common forms of infection. S

hepatocellular carcinoma is more common in men than in women, although much of this is probably due to differences in behaviors that affect risk factors are described below. The subtype of fibrolamellar hepatocellular carcinoma occurs in approximately equal numbers in both sexes.

Autoimmune chronic hepatitis accounts for about 20% of cases of chronic hepatitis. Like other autoimmune disorders, this condition develops because a genetically defective immune system attacks the body’s own cells and organs, in this case, the liver, after being triggered by an environmental agent, probably a virus. Suspects include the measles virus, hepatitis virus or Epstein-Barr virus, which causes mononucleosis. It is also possible that a reaction to a drug or other toxin that affects the liver also triggers an autoimmune response in susceptible individuals.

hepatitis vaccines available are the following:

hepatitis A vaccine is available for people in high risk groups, like day care and nursing homes, laboratory workers, and traveling to parts of the world where hepatitis is common.

What is the treatment?

Most people with hepatitis B do not need specific treatment other than rest and eventually recover completely.

If the infection lasts longer than six months (chronic hepatitis infection), a hospital liver specialist may recommend treatment with antiviral drug called alpha interferon. This treatment aims to reduce the risk of permanent liver damage (cirrhosis) and liver cancer.

medical

If you are dehydrated, your doctor may prescribe IV fluids to help you feel better.

If you are experiencing nausea and vomiting, you will receive medications to control these symptoms.

She won't die, don't worry.

I believe so, I had a pitbull female that went into heat every six months and she acted the very same way. It is funny because I think they experience the same symptoms we go through when we have our periods. I think they do get the cramping and mood swings lol. I think its normal expecially since it would be her first heat cycle. If your really concerned call your vet to see what they have to say, but I can ensure you that everything is okay, she is still a puppy and probably doesnt know what it is going on with her body.

The treated group showed a 23.1 percent improvement on a scale of Parkinson’s symptoms six months after treatment, compared to a 12.7 percent improvement for patients who received sham surgery, according to the published research.

The trial results include only those patients with infusions delivered to the correct area of the brain. there were also a few cases where the pumps delivering the treatment malfunctioned and those cases were also taken out of the analysis.

The final analysis included 16 patients who received active treatment and 21 who received the sham surgery.

“The treatment was remarkably well tolerated, with mostly only mild adverse events in the AAV2-GAD treated group that were felt to be unrelated to the treatment, and completely resolved,” Dr. Andrew Feigin, the study’s lead author and associate professor of neurology and molecular medicine at the Feinstein Institute for Medical research in Manhasset, New York, said in a statement.

The most common side effects were headache and nausea.

The researchers said it is not clear how long the genes will pump out GAD to make GABA.

US researchers have stated that gene therapy is successful in treating Parkinson's disease, as shown in clinical trials for the first time.

As part of the brain dies, slow movement, stiffness and shaking is caused by the illness.

In about 50 per cent of the patients, there were decreased symptoms due to a virus that was added genes to brain cells.

The study was welcomed by Parkinson's UK and also stated the need of more research was there.

As of now, in the UK, about 120,000 people are affected and all these are more than 50 years of age.

No cure is available for this but benefits are seen with deep brain stimulation and some drugs too.

A chemical called GABA is in reduced quantities in patients who suffer from Parkinson's disease in their brain.

GABA production was made to increase with a virus made by researchers that infects cells with a gene.

About 22 patients were given the virus that was put in their brains and sham surgery was given to about 23 people. Over six months, their motor function was scored

About 23.1 per cent improvement was seen among patients who had gene therapy and people who got the sham surgery did not see more than 12.7 per cent improvement.

Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD) and one of its related disorders, AttentionDeficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), affect between 3%-7% of the population in the United States.

ADD is the most common behavioral problem for children and teens and is marked by an inability to focus or concentrate for extended periods. ADHD is marked by hyperactive and/or inappropriate behavior. There are more than three times the number of cases in boys than girls. Children with ADHD are at a higher risk of developing personality disorders and substance abuse problems.

The 2000 edition of the Diagnostic & Statistical Manual for Mental Disorders(DSM-IV-TR) provides the criteria for diagnosing ADD and ADHD. Six or more of the listed symptoms of inattention must be present for at least six months and be disruptive and inappropriate for the child’s developmental level in order to render a diagnosis of ADD or ADHD.

In 1998, a report published by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) spoke about the inability to find a cause or causes of ADD and ADHD. “After years of clinical research and experience with ADHD, our knowledge about the cause or causes of ADHD remains speculative. Consequently, we have no strategies for the prevention of ADHD.”

Experts can’t agree on the causes of ADD and ADHD. some postulate that it is the result of one or more conditions which include diet, allergies, low muscle tone, intolerance to some foods, anxiety, physical or mental illness, parenting deficiencies and poor discipline.

Some experts feel that ADD and ADHD can be caused by frequent childhood infections, such as ear infections. The ADD child can also have other disorders co-existing with attention deficit such as learning disabilities or mental disorders. often, ADD children do poorly in school due to their inability to concentrate and stay focused. as many as half of children with ADHD have co-existing mental disorders.

One of the coexisting disorders in patients with ADHD is Oppositional Defiant Disorder (ODD). Symptoms of ODD usually appear before age eight and may occur with people the child knows well such as family members or regular care providers.
Jan. 19, 2011 — A supplement containing vitamin E and essential fatty acids may help reduce symptoms of premenstrual syndrome (PMS), Brazilian researchers report in Reproductive Health.

Of 120 women with PMS or the more severe premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD), those who took 1- or 2-gram capsules of vitamin E and a combination of gamma linolenic acid, oleic acid, linoleic acid, and other polyunsaturated acids daily showed marked improvements in their PMS symptoms at six months, compared to women who received dummy pills.

The capsules were provided by the Brazilian supplement company Hebron Farmaceutica.

The women who received the higher 2-gram dose of the new supplement showed greater improvements in PMS symptoms than those who received the lower 1-gram dose, the study shows.

PMS symptoms were assessed over six menstrual cycles using the Prospective Record of the Impact and Severity of Menstruation (PRISM), a standardized tool that measures PMS symptoms and their intensity.

Precisely how these supplements combat the symptoms of PMS is not fully understood. But the researchers speculate that the essential fatty acids may affect production of chemicals called prostaglandins, which, in turn, reduce the effects of the hormone prolactin. Too much prolactin or an abnormal response to this hormone may cause PMS symptoms.

The physical and emotional symptoms of PMS symptoms can range from the mild to severe; they usually begin five to 12 days before menstruation and disappear once menstruation starts.

“The results of the current study present some evidence in support of the use of essential fatty acids in PMS patients,” conclude researchers who were led by Edilberto A. Rocha Filho, MD, of the Federal University of Pernambuci in Recife, Pernambuco, Brazil.

The new supplement was safe and the fatty acids did not raise women’s total cholesterol levels.

Potential PMS Remedy

“A lot of women don’t like to talk about PMS because it is the brunt of bad jokes, but PMS symptoms are no joke and can range from the annoying, like acne and bloating, to serious mood and sleep disruptions,” says Donnica Moore, MD, president of Sapphire Women’s Health in far Hills, N.J. “PMS is a serious medical problem that affects a majority of women to varying extents.”

“This PMS remedy in the new study can’t be interpreted as a cure, but it is very promising option for women with PMS,” she says. ”The only cure for PMS is menopause.”

Other PMS treatments include oral contraceptives which stop ovulation, exercise, antidepressants, calcium and vitamin D supplements, and nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory medications, Moore says. “Some women respond to all of the above, and some don’t respond to any.”

More PMS treatments are needed, agrees Samantha Meltzer-Brody, MD, director of the perinatal psychiatry of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill’s Center for Women’s Mood Disorders.

“Currently available treatments only help half of women with PMS, which means that the other 50% continue to struggle. So anything that shows a promise, such as essential fatty acids, and has minimal side effects, would be a useful contribution,” she says.

Women who think they may have PMS should keep a daily mood-rating diary and follow their moods for two months consecutively, she says. “Really track how your mood fluctuates and correlate it with your menstrual cycle.”

The first step is to make lifestyle changes such as eating a healthy diet and taking a daily multivitamin, exercising, minimizing caffeine intake, and getting good sleep, she says.

These may help minimize PMS symptoms. Also, “Talk to doctor about available options, which would include oral contraceptives and antidepressants,” Meltzer-Brody says.

As a parent, you probably want to believe that no harm can befall your child. However if your child is autistic then early detection is the key to effective treatment and recovery.

A neurological disorder that results in developmental disorders, autism is actually not a single disorder but is in reality a spectrum of disorders also known as Autism Spectrum Disorder.

The signs of autism can be detected in infants as young as six months of age. Toddlers with autism have developmental difficulties such as trouble interacting, playing and talking. The severity of the symptoms may vary with some children showing mild impairment symptoms while others have more problems and obstacles to overcome.

However some of the basic signs of autism in toddlers include a delay in communication. Autistic toddlers appear withdrawn and solitary, preferring to keep away from people. they do not make noises to get attention and do not reach out to be picked up.

They may not like loud noises or enjoy too much attention. Instead they may be obsessed with certain things like a piece of paper which can keep them engaged for hours. Preoccupation with certain activity like walking around in circles or clapping hands for hours can be a red alert for parents.

Children with autism may also have difficulty communicating and often seek assistance from others to convey their needs. The delayed speech and small inventory of sounds results in restricted communication with others. moreover they may have trouble making eye contact or imitating facial gestures.

They may be unaware or just disinterested in people around them. some of them may have violent outbursts or throw temper tantrums.

The lack of response of toddlers is one of the most common symptoms of autism in toddlers. if your child does not respond to his or her name or does not smile back or respond to hugs and cuddles then you might have a reason to be concerned. If by six months to nine months you do not observe big smiles or a happy expression along with a lack of response to name and no babbling by twelve months then you might want to consult your pediatrician.

Your pediatrician may in turn recommend screening and formal evaluation of autism so that effective treatment may be provided.

NEW YORK (Reuters Health) – Most people with inflammation of the Achilles tendon, a common overuse injury, can recover with the help of exercise therapy alone, a small study suggests.

A full recovery might take time, as tendons are often slow to heal, researchers say, but sticking with exercise could help people avoid more invasive treatments like drug injections into the joint or even surgery.

The study found that among 34 patients who had exercise therapy for so-called Achilles tendinopathy for three to six months, 80 percent fully recovered with no further treatment — though some developed new symptoms over the next several years.

Another seven patients (20 percent) continued to have pain or other symptoms, but for three, the symptoms were minimal, and only one sought a different form of treatment.

Achilles tendinopathy, also sometimes called Achilles tendinitis, refers to an injury in the band of tissue connecting the calf muscles to the heel bone. it is one of the more common sports-related overuse injuries, estimated to account for about one in 10 running injuries.

Exercise therapy is known to be effective for Achilles tendinopathy, particularly so-called eccentric exercises where the calf muscles contract while being lengthened; an example would be rising onto the balls of the feet, then slowly lowering the heels back to the ground.

But it is not clear exactly how long patients can, or should, stick with exercise before moving on to more invasive treatments.

A common recommendation is for people with Achilles tendinopathy to try exercise therapy for three months, and if they have not recovered at that point, to consider other options.

That is a fairly arbitrary recommendation, however, based on studies that have chosen that window of treatment time. In real life, three months may be too short a time for a full recovery, explained Karin Gravare Silbernagel, a physical therapist and the lead researcher on the new study.

It's known that injured tendons need "mechanical loading" — that is, exercise — to heal, said Silbernagel, of the University of Gothenburg in Sweden, and the University of Delaware in Newark.

"But we also know that a tendon can take a year to heal," she told Reuters Health.

If exercise therapy is given time, according to Silbernagel, many people with Achilles tendinopathy will do well. What's more, they need not give up being active in their daily lives during that potentially lengthy recovery, she noted.

The patients in the current study were all originally part of a clinical trial looking at the effects of three to six months of exercise therapy for Achilles tendinopathy. In that trial, half were told that they could continue their usual physical activities during their rehab, while the other half were told to rest for the first six weeks of therapy.

One year later, both groups were showing similar improvements in pain and functional ability — suggesting that people with Achilles tendinopathy can stay active in their day-to-day lives during therapy, as long as they monitor their symptoms and cut back on exercise if necessary.

The current study, published in the American Journal of Sports Medicine, was a five-year follow-up of that original patient group. at the five-year mark, 65 percent had no symptoms from their initial injury, while 15 percent (five patients) had fully recovered but eventually developed new Achilles symptoms. Only one person in that latter group sought treatment, in the form of further exercise therapy.

"I think the bottom line is that exercise is a treatment that can provide a full recovery," Silbernagel said.

And longer duration exercise therapy need not mean six months of sessions with a physical therapist, she said. Instead, people can learn exercises to perform on their own at home, and if needed, see their physical therapist for follow-ups.

Silbernagel and her colleagues also found that patients' "fear of movement" was related to their long-term recovery of functional ability — as measured by a heel-rise test. Those with a greater level of anxiety about exercising causing pain or raising the risk of an Achilles tendon rupture tended to show less recovery of their muscular endurance.

according to Silbernagel, this suggests that reassuring patients that exercise is a key part of recovery from Achilles tendinopathy might ultimately lead to better treatment outcomes.

Short of surgery, other treatment options for Achilles tendinopathy include standard painkillers, injections of medications like aprotinin (a substance derived from cow lungs that may inhibit an enzyme that breaks down collagen), and injections of platelet-rich plasma, which involves infusing a person's own blood plasma into the injured joint to promote healing.

But whether any of those therapies are truly effective remains unclear. A clinical trial published earlier this year found that platelet-rich plasma, used in addition to eccentric exercises, offered no additional benefit to patients with Achilles tendinopathy.
