“Ike is not contagious, is not taking any medication for his condition and does not currently exhibit any of the outward symptoms associated with Valley Fever,” the statement continued. “However, Ike has been instructed to avoid extreme fatigue. No additional tests or examinations are pending, but Ike will have a follow-up exam when the team returns to NYC in early April.”

Valley Fever is caused by breathing in a fungus that exists in dry desert areas, according to the website WebMD. Davis lives in Phoenix, where the disease is much more familiar to people there than it is on the East Coast.

Symptoms, the website said, include feeling like you have a cold or the flu, fever, chills, chest pain, a dry cough and a rash. Many people who have it never exhibit any symptoms, and most people with the disease get better without treatment.

but people with weak immune systems are more vulnerable to the disease spreading to the skin, bones, lymph nodes and organs, which can lead to bigger problems, such as meningitis, “a very serious infection of the coverings around the brain and spinal cord,” the website said.

A person close to Davis said, “I can tell you he’s not concerned, and everyone around him isn’t concerned. He’s never been symptomatic and he feels great.”

It’s unclear now what impact — if any — this might have on Davis’ season, in which he is trying to come back from last year’s serious ankle injury. he certainly seemed just fine on Saturday, participating in a full pregame workout before going 2-for-2 with a double and an RBI in an intrasquad game. WEST ALLIS, Wis. — Paintings in Barbara May’s two-story home depict a cabin in a sunny meadow, an abstract flower in shades of orange and green.

May, 49, created those scenes. Three years ago she played guitar, painted and cleaned homes. Now she uses a walker for balance, fighting spasms in her legs when she stands. sometimes she struggles just to breathe.

“I don’t go anywhere. I don’t work anymore,” May said. “It feels like I’m wearing a corset. my hands constantly sting. It’s hard just to write a couple of checks.”

May has severe, chronic spinal disease in her neck, her medical records show. She can walk because two years ago she had urgent surgery to remove discs that were compressing her cervical spinal cord, making it swell with fluid. She also has spinal osteoporosis — weak, brittle vertebrae. Spinal manipulation — commonly known as chiropractic adjustment — can be dangerous for patients with spinal nerve damage or osteoporosis, states the Mayo Clinic website, which offers comprehensive information on hundreds of diseases.

But before May knew she had spinal disease, she spent almost a year in the care of a Milwaukee man named Sik Kin Wu. And May says she paid Wu, a self-described “intuitive healer,” to adjust her neck — not once or twice, but 11 times during a year.

Wu, a Shorewood, Wis., restaurant owner with a history of federal tax fraud, says he can tell what’s wrong with people by looking at them. he acknowledged he isn’t licensed to provide health care in the United States, instead providing a certificate stating he completed a four-month acupuncture and Chinese massage program in Shanghai.

But a Journal Sentinel investigation found Wu has used spinal manipulation — considered the work of a chiropractor or, in some cases, a physical therapist or credentialed massage therapist — on May and many others for years. by his own account, Wu also charges $350 to put his hand in people’s vaginas and rectums to “heal” conditions such as ovarian cysts and erectile dysfunction.

The Wisconsin Department of Safety and Professional Services wouldn’t say whether Wu’s activities are legal, but Wisconsin statutes prohibit the unlicensed practice of medicine, surgery or chiropractic care.

May’s story raises questions about who, if anyone, ensures alternative treatments are safe for the nearly 1 in 4 American adults who use them.

“No matter how you look at it, (intuitive healing is) false,” said Wallace Sampson, clinical professor emeritus of medicine at Stanford University and former editor-in-chief of the journal Scientific Review of Alternative Medicine. “Even though they believe what they’re doing is right, it’s intellectually and scientifically fraudulent.”

Indeed, there is little proof many alternative therapies work — even though more than 88 million adults use them, based on the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s 2007 National Health Interview survey.

In an interview, Wu admitted he has no health care license — and initially maintained he doesn’t need one.

“My daughter has a license, and I’m almost retired,” he said. In the same interview, he said he sees so many clients he doesn’t need to advertise.

Wu also said he doesn’t manipulate people the way a chiropractor does. but eight of 11 current and former clients interviewed (five referred by May, six by Wu) said Wu adjusted their spines.

Wisconsin law prohibits the unlicensed practice of medicine and surgery, which it defines to include penetrating “the tissues of a human being” to treat disease.

Not all alternative care is quackery.

For example, peer-reviewed studies suggest mindfulness meditation can prevent recurrent depression and that the Alexander Technique — a mind-body practice to improve posture — reduces back pain.

But alternative therapies often lack scientific evidence, said Sampson, the Stanford professor.

“It’s unfortunate that people, before they would go to someone like (Wu), would not ask him to prove it,” he said. “Prove you can do what you say you do.”

Several factors can drive consumers to seek alternatives to conventional medicine. when a person’s symptoms cause worry, Sampson said, he or she might avoid a medical diagnosis and embrace false hope in a cure, thereby delaying effective treatment.

And while physicians’ ability to understand diseases has improved markedly in the past century, the U.S. health care system doesn’t adequately emphasize wellness or patients’ needs, said Timothy Bartholow, physician and senior vice president of the Wisconsin Medical Society.

“Part of the (alternative care) industry may well be thriving on that alone,” he said.

The Centers for Disease Control survey also found that when people can’t afford conventional care, they’re more likely to seek alternative treatments, as May did.

Cervical spondylosis results from chronic degeneration of the cervical spine including the cushions between the neck vertebrae (cervical disks) and joints between the bones of the cervical spine. There may be abnormal growths or “spurs” on the vertebrae (the bones of the spine).

These accumulated changes caused by degeneration can gradually compress one or more of the nerve roots. this can lead to increasing pain in the neck and arm, weakness, and changes in sensation. In advanced cases, the spinal cord becomes involved. this can affect not just the arms, but the legs as well.

Pain in the neck. this may spread to the base of the skull and shoulders. Movement of the neck may make the pain worse. The pain sometimes spreads down an arm to a hand or fingers. this is caused by irritation of a nerve which goes to the arm from the spinal cord in the neck. The pain tends to wax and wane with flare-ups from time to time. however, some people develop chronic (persistent) pain.

The following methods are used to diagnose arthritis of the neck:

MRIs – Particularly useful for viewing the condition of the spinal nerves, MRIs take pictures from many angles.

CT scans provide good views of the encroachment on nervous tissue caused by the remodeling/reshaping of bones.

Myelogram – this imaging technique enhances the visibility of X-rays. they are especially good for seeing problems located at nerve roots.

The goal of treatment is relief of pain and prevention of permanent spinal cord and nerve root injury.

In mild cases, no treatment is required. Symptoms from cervical spondylosis usually stabilize or regress with simple, conservative therapy including a cervical collar (neck brace) to restrict motion and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medications (NSAIDs). Cortisone injections to specific areas of irritation may also be helpful.

There’s an old adage that cowboys don’t cry.

They are said to have a tough interior that matches their rugged exterior.

For country-music star Clay Walker, the cowboy in him was put to the test in 1996 when he was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis.

“I was visibly upset. I was shaken to the core – the world kind of started spinning. Literally, I felt like I was going to faint when they said it. it wasn’t real. And it scared me to death,” Walker said.

“I prayed a lot, and then I really started searching out what MS was and trying to learn about it, because I didn’t even know what it was. I thought it was muscular dystrophy. I didn’t know.”

Multiple sclerosis is a disease of the nervous system that affects the brain and spinal cord when there is damage to the myelin sheath – the material that covers and protects nerve cells – according to the National Institutes of Health.

Symptoms can include vision problems, muscle weakness, trouble with coordination and balance, sensations of numbness or prickling, pain, and thinking or memory deficits. MS affects more than 400,000 people in the U.S., and 2.1 million worldwide, according to the National MS Society.

Walker’s disease presented itself first with double vision, and he then started having weakness and tingling in his right hand and right leg.

After an MRI and spinal tap, he was diagnosed with MS and was told he would be in a wheelchair within four years and dead in eight.

Fifteen years later, the 41-year-old continues to prove that prognosis wrong as he kicks off a U.S. tour tonight at the San Bernardino County fair.

At the time he was diagnosed, new medications were becoming available for treatment of MS, but his first doctor did not prescribe him any, Walker said. his second doctor put him on a drug that did not work.

Finally, a third doctor prescribed him Copaxone, which Walker says has kept him in remission – minimal symptoms and no progression of the disease – for the past 13 years.

So, he says, his message to people suffering from MS is: “If at first you don’t succeed, try, try again.”

“People talk about attitude all the time – having a positive attitude. I think attitude is such an overused word that people don’t really understand where attitude comes from,” Walker said. “So if I could give a little lesson it would be this: Your will is more important than your attitude, because your will affects your attitude – that is where your attitude comes from.”

Walker’s will during the two years he was suffering from the disease kept him going. he was still performing as a musician, though he had a slightly lighter schedule.

He would take steroids to shrink the swelling in his brain – which occurs when the body attacks the nerve cells – but the drugs made his whole body break out into a rash.

“There was some pretty bad things in the first two years, but nothing was worse than the psychological damage that it was doing on me,” said Walker. “I was just scared. And I had never been scared before in my life. But for those two years I was.”

When Walker was first diagnosed, he was a rising star in the country music world. just three years prior, his first two singles – “Live Until I Die” and “What’s it to You” – reached no. 1 on the Billboard country chart. “Dreaming With my Eyes Open” and “If I could make a Living” did the same in 1994.

He decided he had to announce his condition to the music industry and to his fans. it was something he says he couldn’t hide and thought it was fair for people to know the truth.

He also wanted to prove a point.

“I think it can be inspirational because it has not affected my touring or my singing or anything,” Walker said.

“It’s important that other people who are diagnosed with MS, other neurological disorders or any other thing, that they know it doesn’t mean a death sentence and it doesn’t mean the end of your life as you know it,” he said. “It means that you can conquer a lot if you want to, and I’ve done it.”

Though Walker is now in remission, there are still days MS makes him feel weak. he tries to exercise every day because he says circulation is important for those with MS, and it helps boost the immune system.

He is constantly seeking a cure for MS and holds an annual MS fundraiser – the Clay Walker Charity Classic. The golf tournament will take place June 30 through July 2 in Pebble Beach.

He also performed in April, in Century City, at the Race to Erase MS benefit sponsored by the Nancy Davis Foundation for Multiple Sclerosis.

Walker says he feels a sense of duty to help those who are suffering from the disease. his prognosis tested his will, but it proved cowboys are tough and they don’t give up – at least not him.

“The cowboy in me made me want to find a cure and to fight for it. That’s the way I look at it,” Walker said.

“People that know me know I still rope and ride, and I still do all the things I did before I was diagnosed. so that’s important, you know, not to let anything, no disease, nothing, take away your passion and happiness.”

Multiple sclerosis (MS) can be thought of as an inflammatory process involving different areas of the central nervous system (CNS) at various points in time. as the name suggests, multiple sclerosis affects many areas of the CNS.

Multiple sclerosis is more common in individuals of northern European descent. Women are more than twice as likely to develop multiple sclerosis as men. Multiple sclerosis usually affects people between the ages of 20 and 50 years, and the average age of onset is approximately 34 years.

The central nervous system is made up of the brain and spinal cord. They process information from our environment and control voluntary muscle movements to allow the body to do certain things.

When you touch something hot, for example, signals are sent from sensory nerve endings in your hand up long nerves in your arm, eventually reaching the spinal cord. From there, the signal is transferred up your spinal cord to your brain, where the information is processed. your brain then sends a signal back down the spinal cord to the nerves in your arm. These nerves cause the muscles in your arm to contract, pulling your hand away from the heat.

This neural system works efficiently, unless there is a disease process affecting the pathways in the spinal cord and brain. Multiple sclerosis is one of the diseases that can affect these pathways. Signals are transmitted within the central nervous system along pathways.

These pathways are made up of long fibers called nerves. Nerves are capable of transmitting information from the environment to the brain. Everything you see, touch, taste, smell, or feel is transmitted along nerves to your brain.

Nerves also carry information responsible for our alertness, behavior, ability to understand and think rationally, capacity to communicate with others, and feeling and interpreting emotions.

To help transmit all this information in a timely manner, the nerves are covered by a fatty substance called myelin. Myelin insulates the nerves and allows them to transmit information to and from the brain in a fraction of a second.

If the myelin is disrupted in any way, the transmitted information is not only delayed, but it may also be misinterpreted by the brain.

Multiple sclerosis results in destruction of the myelin surrounding the nerves of the CNS. the destruction is thought to be caused by the body’s immune system attacking the myelin sheath.

This autoimmune destruction of the myelin sheath leads to areas of demyelination (also known as plaques) in the brain and spinal cord.

These plaques disrupt the transmission of information in the CNS and lead to the symptoms seen in multiple sclerosis.

The symptoms of multiple sclerosis can be different from person to person. Visual, sensory, and motor signs and symptoms are all part of multiple sclerosis. the clinical manifestations are varied, and therefore there is a wide range of symptoms that can appear. some people have mild cases of multiple sclerosis with little or no disability over the years. others have more severe types of multiple sclerosis, requiring confinement to a wheelchair or bed.

Still others may live their entire lives symptom-free (some individuals without multiple sclerosis symptoms are found incidentally to have multiple sclerosis lesions by MRI, or individuals in whom an examination of their brain after death unexpectedly reveals that they were affected by the disease). this variability makes it difficult in some cases to diagnose multiple sclerosis. often the signs and symptoms are mistaken as being psychiatric in origin.

The first symptoms of multiple sclerosis are often visual changes. Large number of people with multiple sclerosis develop optic neuritis (inflammation of the optic nerve, which is an extension of the central nervous system), described as a painful vision loss. If a patient is diagnosed with optic neuritis early, treatment could change the course of the disease.

Before the actual loss of vision, the patient may have visual changes described by many people as blurred or hazy vision, flashing lights, or alterations in color. the tissues around the eye and moving the eye may be painful. most people recover over several months. others are left with permanent visual defects. Double vision occurs when the eyes move in different directions and is another common symptom of multiple sclerosis.

Multiple sclerosis commonly affects the cerebellum, the portion of the brain responsible for balance and fine motor coordination. consequently, people with multiple sclerosis often have difficulty maintaining their balance when walking and performing delicate tasks with their hands. Unexplained dropping of a cup or other object or unusual weakness can occur.

Patients may experience facial pain, a sensation of spinning referred to as vertigo, and sometimes hearing loss. Virtually any area of the body can be involved, making this disease the great imitator of other disorders of the nervous system. the patient may experience painful muscle spasms or loss of strength in one or more of the arms or legs.

The nerve fibers that conduct touch, pain, and temperature sensations are often affected, causing tingling, numbness or electrical-type pain sensations in the chest, abdomen, arms or legs. Multiple sclerosis can involve the nerves responsible for involuntary actions of the bladder and intestines. the pateint may often have constipation and urinary retention. These symptoms lead to other complications, such as infections of the bladder, kidney, or blood.

Most people with multiple sclerosis complain of a constant state of tiredness. something as simple as carrying groceries up a flight of stairs may become an impossible task for someone with multiple sclerosis.

A peculiar trait of multiple sclerosis is the relationship between higher temperatures and the worsening of symptoms. People often complain of worsening of any of their symptoms after taking a hot shower, or participating in strenuous exercise.

The exact reason this occurs is unknown. Perhaps it is because at higher temperatures nerve conduction decreases, which could lead to further slowing in the transmission of messages in nerves that have already lost myelin.

A physician should be notified if you or someone you know have any of the signs and symptoms associated with multiple sclerosis. Also check with a doctor if you or someone you know have any signs or symptoms that may not be associated but that are of concern. the person may not have multiple sclerosis, but because of the nonspecific nature of this disease, it is best to let a qualified professional make that determination.

Several of the symptoms of multiple sclerosis may send the patient to a hospital’s emergency department. If visual changes and painful eye movements are experienced, visit the nearest emergency department. the patient could have optic neuritis, one of the most common early signs of multiple sclerosis.

If the patient experiences personality changes or sudden loss of strength in the arms and legs they should go to the emergency department for evaluation. These symptoms are common with multiple sclerosis, but they can also be signs of other serious diseases, such as stroke, infection, or chemical imbalances.

Diagnosing multiple sclerosis is difficult. the vague and nonspecific nature or this disease mimics many other diseases. Doctors combine history, physical exam, laboratory work, and sophisticated medical imaging techniques to arrive at a diagnosis.

A complete blood count, blood chemistry, urine analysis, and often spinal fluid evaluation are all routine laboratory tests used to rule out other diagnoses and help confirm the diagnosis of multiple sclerosis. An MRI, which creates an image of the brain or the spinal cord, is used to search for changes within the brain or spinal cord that are particular to multiple sclerosis. more often than not, a neurology specialist is required to make a diagnosis.

There are several treatment options for multiple sclerosis. the following is a brief summary of the drugs approved by the FDA to treat multiple sclerosis. For more information, consult your physician.

Substances called interferons are immunomodulatory (meaning they affect the action of the immune system) drugs that have been approved to treat multiple sclerosis. Interferons are also made by the body, mainly to combat viral infections.

Interferons have been shown to decrease relapses by about one-third (if compared to patients receiving placebo) and delay progression of the disease. Common side effects include flu-like symptoms (which tend to disappear with time) and injection site reactions (which can be minimized with analgesics, rotation of injection sites, and local measures to prepare the skin prior to injection).

Interferons include interferon beta-1a (Avonex) which is given once a week as an injection into the muscle interferon beta-1a [(Rebif), which is given three times per week as an injection below the skin)], and interferon beta-1b [(Betaseron), which is given every other day as an injection below the skin].

Glatiramer acetate (Copaxone) is a mixture of amino acids used to treat multiple sclerosis. Glatiramer acetate has been shown to decrease the relapse rates of multiple sclerosis by about one-third (if compared to patients receiving placebo) and appears to also have an effect on the overall progression of multiple sclerosis.

Common side effects with Glatiramer acetate include a sensation of chest tightening following the injection, and injection site reactions which may include rare skin lesions referred to as lipoatrophy. Copaxone is given every day as an injection below the skin.

Natalizumab (Tysabri) is a monoclonal antibody that binds to white blood cells and interferes with their movement from the bloodstream into the brain and spinal cord. White blood cells are thought to play a role in causing the nervous system damage in multiple sclerosis.

Tysabri decreases relapses by about two- thirds (if compared to patients receiving placebo) and reduces the accumulation of disability, but carries a warning for increasing the risk of progressive multifocal encephalopathy (PML), a potentially fatal brain infection. because of this risk, Tysabri can only be given to patients that have registered for treatment under a controlled drug distribution program.

Several drugs that suppress the immune system and are used to treat cancer have also been used to treat multiple sclerosis, but they may make people with multiple sclerosis very ill, especially if not used with caution. Mitoxantrone (Novantrone) is a chemotherapy agent that has been approved by the FDA to treat multiple sclerosis.

Treatment with mitoxantrone requires monitoring of cardiac function, and there is a fixed limit to the dose that can be administered to patients. It also carries the long-term risk of leukemia. For these reasons, Novantrone is typically reserved for patients with more aggressive forms of multiple sclerosis.

New research and treatment methods are currently being investigated and are expected to offer some hope to people with multiple sclerosis.

The FINANCIAL — BERLIN. Necropsy results show that Knut, the world's most famous polar bear from the Berlin zoo, drowned when brain swelling caused him to collapse, zoo director Bernhard Blaszkiewitz said on April 1, according to RIA Novosti.

"The cause of Knut's death was viral infection, which led to brain inflammation," he said.

The nature of the infection, which severely damaged the animal's brain and spinal cord, is yet to be established. Experts have already ruled out rabies, botulism and a prion infection.

Knut carried the disease for several months, and it had developed to a stage when it would have killed the animal sooner or later.

Knut, the first bear born in the Berlin Zoo in 30 years, died unexpectedly on March 19 at the age of four after falling into the water in his compound. Drowning was declared the immediate cause of his death.

Male polar bears normally live to their mid-30s in zoos and between 15 and 18 years in the wild.

Neurologist Christian Elger of the University of Bonn earlier said that Knut's convulsionary movements, which preceded his collapse, were symptoms of an epileptic seizure.

Knut was born in December 2006 and his mother rejected the cub shortly after his birth. Knut immediately captured the international community's heart and became a world celebrity – a popular brand, a symbol of the fight against global warming and a "poster-cub" for the polar bear campaign.

Medical marijuana gets a lot of interest as a potential natural remedy for pain and other symptoms of multiple sclerosis.

But precious little research has been done to see if pot actually helps with the symptoms of MS, which affects the brain and spinal cord.

In the meantime, some people with MS have been doing their own experiments on MS and pain relief, also known as smoking dope. about 16 percent of MS patients smoke cannabis regularly, and many say they think it helps provide relief from pain, spasticity, insomnia, bladder problems, tremors, and emotional distress.

Canadian researchers wondered how those people were doing, because one of the hallmarks of MS is increased difficulty with thinking, and pot smoking isn’t known for enhancing mental acuity. So the researchers compared the cognitive function of people with MS who often smoke marijuana.

The verdict: Pot smokers fared slightly worse on tests of thinking speed, working memory, executive function, and other cognitive tasks then their non-toking peers. and they did worse overall on thinking clearly, with 64 percent doing poorly on overall cognitive perfromance, compared to 32 percent of nonsmokers. that troubled the University of Toronto researchers who write:

Given that approximately 40 percent to 60 percent of patients with MS are cognitively impaired to begin with, any drug that may add to this burden gives cause for concern.

The results appear in the current issue of the journal Neurology.

Now it must be said, this study was very small, with just 25 people in each group, so the results may not hold up in the long run. but they do suggest that people who are considering smoking marijuana for symptom relief also consider its impact on their thinking, particularly if they’re suffering from a neurological disorder known to make it hard to think clearly.
