<p>“The number of those diagnosed &#104;&#097;&#115; dropped dramatically &#105;&#110; &#116;&#104;&#101; &#112;&#097;&#115;&#116; 40 years,” says Heysek. “About 12,000 women &#097;&#114;&#101; diagnosed with cervical cancer &#101;&#097;&#099;&#104; year.”</p>
<p>There &#097;&#114;&#101; no real symptoms &#105;&#110; &#116;&#104;&#101; early stages of cervical cancer. &#116;&#104;&#097;&#116; is &#119;&#104;&#121; Dr. Heysek says it is important for women to receive annual Pap smear exams. He also adds &#116;&#104;&#097;&#116; &#116;&#104;&#101; screenings &#104;&#097;&#118;&#101; helped lead to better treatment of &#116;&#104;&#101; disease. </p>
<p>“With regular screenings, doctors &#097;&#114;&#101; &#097;&#098;&#108;&#101; to catch cervical cancer &#105;&#110; &#116;&#104;&#101; early stages, &#119;&#104;&#101;&#110; treatment is &#110;&#111;&#116; &#097;&#115; radical &#097;&#110;&#100; &#116;&#104;&#101; survival rate is higher,” he says.</p>
<p>Dr. Heysek &#101;&#120;&#112;&#108;&#097;&#105;&#110;&#115; &#116;&#104;&#101; &#116;&#104;&#114;&#101;&#101; main treatment options for those diagnosed with cervical cancer:</p>
<p><strong>Surgical Treatment</strong>Surgery is a common method used to treat cervical cancer. &#105;&#110; many cases, surgery is combined with &#111;&#116;&#104;&#101;&#114; treatment methods, like radiation therapy or chemotherapy. </p>
<p>Conization: &#116;&#104;&#105;&#115; is a procedure &#119;&#104;&#101;&#110; a cone-shaped tip of &#116;&#104;&#101; cervix &#097;&#110;&#100; cervical canal &#097;&#114;&#101; removed surgically. &#116;&#104;&#101; tissue &#116;&#104;&#097;&#116; is removed is then examined &#098;&#121; a pathologist to determine if cancer cells &#097;&#114;&#101; present. &#116;&#104;&#105;&#115; &#099;&#097;&#110; be used &#097;&#115; a diagnostic tool, &#097;&#115; &#119;&#101;&#108;&#108; &#097;&#115; a treatment for early stage cervical cancer.</p>
<p>Hysterectomy: Depending on &#116;&#104;&#101; severity of &#116;&#104;&#101; cancer &#116;&#104;&#101; cervix, uterus, fallopian tubes, ovaries &#097;&#110;&#100; nearby lymph nodes &#109;&#097;&#121; be removed. It &#109;&#097;&#121; &#110;&#111;&#116; be necessary to remove everything &#098;&#117;&#116; all tissue with cancer cells present is &#116;&#097;&#107;&#101;&#110;.</p>
<p>Trachelectomy: &#116;&#104;&#105;&#115; procedure removes &#106;&#117;&#115;&#116; &#116;&#104;&#101; cervix &#097;&#110;&#100; its surrounding tissue. &#116;&#104;&#101; uterus remains intact. &#116;&#104;&#105;&#115; is a &#103;&#111;&#111;&#100; option for women &#105;&#110; &#116;&#104;&#101; early stages of cervical cancer who &#115;&#116;&#105;&#108;&#108; want to remain fertile.</p>
<p><strong>Radiation Therapy</strong>Radiation therapy is a treatment option &#116;&#104;&#097;&#116; uses high energy beams to &#107;&#105;&#108;&#108; cancer cells &#097;&#110;&#100; reduce &#116;&#104;&#101; size of a tumor. &#116;&#104;&#105;&#115; &#099;&#097;&#110; be done internally with radioactive materials or externally with &#116;&#104;&#101; &#117;&#115;&#101; of radiation therapy machines.</p>
<p>Radiation therapy is an effective method of treating cervical cancer &#097;&#110;&#100; is often used &#105;&#110; conjunction with chemotherapy. &#116;&#104;&#101; &#117;&#115;&#101; &#097;&#110;&#100; duration of radiation treatment depends on &#116;&#104;&#101; stage of cervical cancer &#097;&#110;&#100; if &#111;&#116;&#104;&#101;&#114; treatment methods &#097;&#114;&#101; &#098;&#101;&#105;&#110;&#103; used.</p>
<p><strong>Chemotherapy</strong>Chemotherapy is common cancer treatment. Chemotherapy drugs work &#098;&#121; killing cancer cells &#097;&#110;&#100; preventing them from multiplying. There &#097;&#114;&#101; several chemotherapy drugs to treat cervical cancer. Those medications &#097;&#114;&#101; prescribed based on &#116;&#104;&#101; stage &#097;&#110;&#100; type of cancer.</p>
<p>Chemotherapy is also used to &#104;&#101;&#108;&#112; radiation therapy be more effective. </p>
