Share it: Tweet Share RSS Feed (PR NewsChannel) / January 04, 2011 / DAVENPORT, Fla. / Cervical cancer used to be one of the top cancer killers among women, but better and more frequent screenings prove that is no longer the case, says Dr. Randy Heysek, founder of the Central Florida Cancer Institute.

“The number of those diagnosed has dropped dramatically in the past 40 years,” says Heysek. “About 12,000 women are diagnosed with cervical cancer each year.”

There are no real symptoms in the early stages of cervical cancer. that is why Dr. Heysek says it is important for women to receive annual Pap smear exams. He also adds that the screenings have helped lead to better treatment of the disease.

“With regular screenings, doctors are able to catch cervical cancer in the early stages, when treatment is not as radical and the survival rate is higher,” he says.

Dr. Heysek explains the three main treatment options for those diagnosed with cervical cancer:

Surgical TreatmentSurgery is a common method used to treat cervical cancer. in many cases, surgery is combined with other treatment methods, like radiation therapy or chemotherapy.

Conization: this is a procedure when a cone-shaped tip of the cervix and cervical canal are removed surgically. the tissue that is removed is then examined by a pathologist to determine if cancer cells are present. this can be used as a diagnostic tool, as well as a treatment for early stage cervical cancer.

Hysterectomy: Depending on the severity of the cancer the cervix, uterus, fallopian tubes, ovaries and nearby lymph nodes may be removed. It may not be necessary to remove everything but all tissue with cancer cells present is taken.

Trachelectomy: this procedure removes just the cervix and its surrounding tissue. the uterus remains intact. this is a good option for women in the early stages of cervical cancer who still want to remain fertile.

Radiation TherapyRadiation therapy is a treatment option that uses high energy beams to kill cancer cells and reduce the size of a tumor. this can be done internally with radioactive materials or externally with the use of radiation therapy machines.

Radiation therapy is an effective method of treating cervical cancer and is often used in conjunction with chemotherapy. the use and duration of radiation treatment depends on the stage of cervical cancer and if other treatment methods are being used.

ChemotherapyChemotherapy is common cancer treatment. Chemotherapy drugs work by killing cancer cells and preventing them from multiplying. There are several chemotherapy drugs to treat cervical cancer. Those medications are prescribed based on the stage and type of cancer.

Chemotherapy is also used to help radiation therapy be more effective.
