I have had most of my bowel removed already but still have my rectal stump left in which is inflamed and about to be removed in May which will cure me of UC. I have suffered from mouth ulcers since I started to flare for the first time a year ago and have never not been in a flare up since and have been on steroids since then also.

Whenever I come down to a very low dose of steroids or come off them I very quickly (2days) get mouth ulcers. They go away right away when I take steroids again. this is clearly as a result of my UC. will they stop coming once I have had my whole colon removed and thus no more UC? I suppose im worried that when im cured of UC I will still get these ulcers even though I cant see why if I don't have UC anymore. Anyone with experience or any doctors on here would be very much appreciated.

I am one of those people who took accutane for my cystic acne when I was 17. It worked wonders for the acne, but 3 years later when I was 20, I developed ulcerative colitis(UC). I don’t know if it caused it or not and likely never will. Another interesting thing regarding the onset of my colitis is antibiotic use. 7 or 8 months before I started developing symptoms that would later be diagnosed as UC, I had a very bad staph infection–on my face. I was injected with antibiotics and took them orally. I don’t know if it caused my UC but my poops were never the same after that assault on my system!

My Ulcerative Colitis Story:

So have had UC for 5 years now. Right now I am on tons of prednisone. Thanks to the extra energy afforded by the steroids, I was able to stay up into the wee hours of the morning watching Adam’s awesome videos. I don’t know why I’d never thought to search ‘ulcerative colitis‘ on youtube before, but I’m really glad I did.

I started having more and more mucus in my stools. I didn’t think much of it, it just an observation. as soon as I saw a little blood I called my family doctor. He put his finger in my butt and referred me to a GI doc for a colonoscopy. Soon came the excruciating pain, frequent diarrhea, and even more blood. I thought I was going to die waiting to find out what was wrong with me. I kept calling the GI doc and they moved up my appointment. I’m definitely a worry wart. The colonoscopy showed ulcerative proctitis (just the rectum as affected at that time). I was put on rowasa enemas and asacol. That worked great for about 3 months. next was cortenemas.

I didn’t like the original doctor I’d been referred to so I switched after seeing him for a few years. If anyone is reading this who doesn’t like their doctor, please look for a new one! My old doctor would take forever to return my calls. Anytime I had a little flare he wanted to do a sigmoidoscopy (with me a wake, it got really old). When I was stable I switched to another doctor recommended to me in another UC community on livejournal. I had an appointment with him when I wasn’t flaring just to meet him and get a treatment plan if I should flare. I liked him already. Then he told me he wanted to do blood work. He was appalled my other doctor had never done any blood work. I then fell in love with him (in an appropriate patient/doctor relationship way!). He seemed to proactive about my health. The blood work revealed I was a little anemic and his wonderful nurse taught me how to give myself B12 shots. I forgot to mention I was vegetarian at this time. The B12 shots gave me a lot of energy back.

So over 5 years I have so many UC stories to share, they wouldn’t all fit in here. I’ve been through tons of embarrassing things, things that would have destroyed me before I had UC, and am learning to move on. I went from never pooing in public restrooms, pooing in my own pants publicly, was hospitalized once, to proudly leaving my enemas out in the open for all to see during airport scans (you can have liquids on the plane as long as it’s medicine). I was afraid the airport security was going to take me into a room and use one to prove it was medicine, but it turns out no one messes with you when you when you are waving around something that has a ‘for rectal use only’ sticker.

I’ve never really had a good, long remission. 3 months at most usually. I’ve lost track of how many flares I’ve had. I’m tired of doctors telling me I will probably end up having to have surgery. I’ve been on lots of meds. I am still on asacol because if I try to stop or switch to something similar, the flares get worse. I’ve tried 6mp. I’ve tried Some Green Stuff that is illegal in the great state of Missouri where I live(works great for the pain but the idea of getting caught freaks me out too much). The most relief I had was when I started probiotics a year ago and stopped taking 6mp, and started exercising, a lot. I feel like 6mp makes my flares worse. My doctor says the next step is remicade and I’m not ready to go there.

As I mentioned, today I am on prednisone. for the last year for a flare I was doing cortenemas for a week or two and that cleared it up. I fell off my probiotics and exercise wagon and I restarted 6mp last month and I am starting to think having a suppressed immune system allows the flares to gain more power. but I’m not a doctor or a scientist. For the past two weeks I have begun to notice a major uptick in the amount of sweat that comes out of me while I lay sleeping at night. This has hit me as quite strange because my ulcerative colitis symptoms are nearly gone. what I am talking about is the more typical runny bowels and bleeding and cramping. So, why would I be doing this sweating thing while everything else is quiet? I am not too worried anymore, but it sure would be nice for the night sweats to just go away. We will see if that happens once I stop the use of prednisolone steroids.

What is Cushing’s disease?

Cushing’s is a disorder of the adrenal gland which sits on top of each kidney. the disease occurs because the adrenal gland produces an excessive amount of cortisol which is a steroid hormone that is released during stress. This occurs because there is a problem with the pituitary gland that signals the adrenal gland to release cortisol, or because there is a problem with the adrenal gland itself. the majority of cases with Cushing’s disease occur because of a pituitary gland problem. if a dog receives steroids in excessive amounts, this can also result in Cushing’s disease. Both the adrenal and pituitary form of Cushing’s disease usually occur because of a tumor. the tumor is benign in most cases but can be malignant in rare situations.

What are the symptoms of Cushing’s disease?

In the early stages, there may not be any symptoms. As the disease progresses, common symptoms include increased appetite, increased thirst, increased urination, lethargy, a distended abdomen, excessive panting, and hair loss.

What should I do if my dog is showing symptoms of Cushing’s disease?

If you suspect your dog may have Cushing’s, you should have him/her evaluated by your veterinarian. Your veterinarian will likely perform an examination. Diagnostics such as blood work and urinalysis will also likely be necessary to obtain a diagnosis. if your veterinarian suspects Cushing’s after initial diagnostics have been performed, further blood testing called an ACTH stimulation test or low dose dexamethasone test will likely be needed for a definitive diagnosis and in order to identify the source of the problem (pituitary gland vs. adrenal gland).  Other imaging including abdominal ultrasound may also be necessary.

What can I do if my dog has Cushing’s disease?

If your dog is diagnosed with Cushing’s, there is medication or surgery that can help. the medication is called Lysodren. another medication called Trilostane is sometimes used. obviously, close regulation of medication using blood testing is necessary since overdoing it can cause severe problems with Addison’s disease – hypoadrenocorticism which can cause loss of appetite, vomiting, diarrhea, lethargy, and weakness. Blood work will need to be monitored weekly in the beginning then eventually every 1-3 months. Once your dog’s condition is well controlled and he/she seems to tolerate the medication well, blood work every 6 months is performed. An ACTH Stimulation test and other blood work to monitor kidney function and electrolytes are usually performed to ensure your dog is on the ideal dosage of medication. A dog that has the adrenal form of Cushing’s can also benefit from surgery to remove the tumor causing the problem.

What is the prognosis if my dog is diagnosed with Cushing’s?

The average life expectancy is approximately 2 years but this an “educated guess” rather than an exact science. every dog will tolerate the disease and medication differently so lifespan will vary. the goal of therapy is to improve quality of life.

I'm 20 years old and was diagnosed with Ulcerative Colitis over the summer. I guess 15-20% with colitis get rally bad arthritis and joint pain, and unfortunately i'm that 15-20%. I've been on high dosage of steroids for almost 3 months to help with the inflammation which seems to be working but Prednisone is seriously RUINING MY LIFE. My face is HUGE i've gained 20 pounds, can't sleep, night sweats, and i'm so depressed i'm actually crying right now I just need to know if i'll start feeling better after i'm off the steroids. I feel like a fat piece of crap, and no one understands. I'm a waitress and I can't work due to the joint pain so i'm so broke and I just feel so lost. I'm always SO happy but i've been a hermit lately, living in my room….my mom doesn't understand and just thinks i'm depressed even though i tell her all of the side effects that prednisone creates. has anyone gone through this? Talk to nurses at the hospital he is with. they will tell you the truth about what he is like. Also don't jump into a treatment called Remicade, it helps buy can be dangerous. What makes you think you have Crohn's as opposed to some other IBS ?

I was diagnosed with Crohns about years ago. Strangely enough, it started with these huge open wounds on my leg (pyoderma gangrenosum). Long story short, I started to have severe diarrhea and lost a ton of weight very quickly which was accompanied by sores in my mouth, etc. I had a barium procedure and a colonoscopy which found the ulcerated tissue but there may be instances where a colonoscopy may not show the ulcerated colon the first time ,so another colonoscopy may be needed. You defintely need a good Gastroenterologist though. As for steroids…STAY AWAY!!! I had to be on them for almost 2 years which is an extremely long time. they make you insatiably hungry (I could outeat anyone!) and its the constant eating that makes you put on weight (me, 50 lbs) plus serious water retention. Not only that, it really messes with your emotions. You've heard of "roid rage"? They're not kidding. I went from happy to angry to tears in the span of 10 minutes. It also can damage your internal organs. there are treatments such as Methotrexate (my fave), Remicade, and other immuno suppressants (since Crohn's is caused by an overactive immune system). Hello! Well, I was just recently diagnosed with Crohn's Disease this year. 2 weeks before my 16th birthday, spent it in the hospital. Anywho! I was diagnosed, by a barium x-ray, and a colonoscopy, and endoscopy. they will give you steroids if the inflammation is very severe. my first and only words are, dont take them,UNLESS you need to. I am a petite person, I am 5'6 and was 126 lbs. after I took the steroids, I kept eating and eating, and couldn't stop. I went from 5'6 to 5'8 Thanks to the roids, they make you grow for short time use. and gained 32 lbs. some say I was severely underweight, some say it was water weight. I hate it! I got off the steroids nearly 3 months later. Since then, I have only lost 6 lbs. they say it will come off slowly, these are Miracle Drugs, if you need it, then take it. I know this weight will come off, with a little bit of exercize and diet. just don't worry and Trust in God.

My ex-husband had it back in 1984. It was caused by stress. He chilled out with xanax and hasn't had any more signs or symptoms. good luck, Kitty

Symptoms of Chrone's include irregular bowel movments, diarrhea, severe abdomnimal cramping and fever.
If your colonoscopy was negative, ask your doctor about a disease called "the Sprue" (also called Celiac disease).
The symptoms are often very similar, but the Sprue is basiclly an allergy to wheat and gluten.
Back to Chrone's…it's can be managed with a medication called Questran, which helps calm and soothe the intestines. Steriods are also used to decrease the inflammation in the intestines, but, yes, the side effects of steriods can be awful. they do make you gain weight, but yes, this is usually because there is an increase in hungar or appetite.
