Scientists suspect that some gene combinations may result in a particularly potent form of flu and ignite a pandemic in humans. but because these viruses are more likely to meet in the lungs of an Asian chicken farmer than under the nose of a virologist, researchers find it difficult to predict which gene combinations might be the most virulent and contagious.

So instead of waiting and seeing, researchers have played matchmaker and thrust the two viruses together in a test tube. a team in China generated 127 hybrid viruses and injected each one into lab mice. more than half of the hybrids were as good as their parent strains at infecting the mice, and eight of them proved to be more pathogenic, the team led by Jinhua Liu of the China Agricultural University in Beijing reports online today in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

Three strains of influenza may be the reason why local drug stores are constantly stocking cold, cough and other over-the-counter medications for flu symptoms. And why Sierra View District Hospital saw a 21-percent spike in visits to the emergency department by patients with flu symptoms.

“We’ve seen an influx of patients with influenza-type symptoms asking for medicines that will help them with their symptoms,” said Scott Tuttle, pharmacist, Rite Aid Pharmacy Store on Morton Avenue. “It’s been hard trying to keep all the medicines stocked.”

Tuttle also said he had no official data but that it appeared that less people opted for flu shots, taking their chances and suffering the consequences. Medications appeared to fly off shelves at various pharmacies across town, pharmacists reported.

“it seems like in the last couple of weeks, or a month actually, we have had quite a bit of an increase in sales of cough and cold symptom over-the-counter medications as well as prescribed medications that come as a result of those symptoms,” said pharmacist Sepehr Mansuri, pharmacist at the CVS Pharmacy on East Olive Avenue.

This year, the peak of the flu season came late, said Dr. Karen Haught, Tulare County Public Health Officer.

“It’s just now peaking,” Haught said. “And there’s three strains of influenza circulating, including the 2009 H1N1 (Swine Flu) strain.”

It may have hit at a different time frame but the symptoms of the flu remain the same.“There’s a lot of flu out there but there are no real numbers to look at because it is not a condition that has to be reported,” Haught said.

Locally, clinics, hospitals and physician offices have been seeing an obvious increase in the number of patients with influenza symptoms.

At Sierra View District Hospital, the emergency department has seen a couple of spikes during the last week of February, reported Donna Davis, director of emergency services.

On Feb. 23, the number of influenza cases in the emergency department went up 9-percent. The next day, Feb. 24., the number spiked to 21-percent. The number of cases moved up and down for the next three days before rising again to 21-percent on Feb. 28.

But since then, the number of cases have been below 6-percent consistently, hospital officials said.

Kaweah Delta Lindsay Health Clinic also reported an increase of patients with flu symptoms.“We’ve seen an increase in the past three weeks,” said David Rodriguez, M.a., Kaweah Delta Lindsay Health Clinic. “I would say at least 30-percent increase in flu cases, mainly children — 30-to 50-percent of them — have been in with flu symptoms.

Most people, if they are healthy tend to get over the flu in three to four days — simply by drinking fluids and resting, Haught said.

“but people with chronic conditions, the elderly, those who are pregnant and young children are especially vulnerable. that is why it is important for them to see their physician as soon as possible,” Haught said. “There is medicine to help shorten the illness but it must be started early in the illness in order for it to work.”

And because the H1N1 virus is still here, it is crucial for younger children and pregnant women to protect themselves with flu shots, she said.

This year CDPH is recommending flu vaccine for everyone six months of age and older. Vaccine is plentiful and available throughout the state.

Free flu shots will be offered from 2 to 4 p.m. Tuesday at Lindsay Healthy Start, 475 E. Honolulu. No appoint is needed but they do not accept healthy Families Insurance or private insurance. they will accept non-insured, Medi-Cal or insurance that does not cover immunizations. a parent must be present with the child and past immunization records should be taken.

February is again proving to be the peak time for cases of influenza in Illinois and across the nation. according to the Illinois Department of Public Health the number of people with the flu is spiking, and many more people are likely to fall ill before the season ends.

“For the last 30 years in the United States, February has been the prime month for illness with the regular seasonal flu, though infections can occur in April and as late as may,” said internal medicine physician Dr. Michael Koller of Loyola University Health system (LUHS).

The H1N1 strain, also known as “swine flu,” is still around but it’s not as widespread. To account for its presence, this year’s flu vaccine contains the H1N1 strain as well as two others – the Perth H3N2 virus and the B Brisbane virus. Fortunately, this year’s vaccine has been a good match to the strains circulating in the United States. So getting a vaccine this late in the season can still offer protection, even if flu activity has already started in your area.

“Doctors used to advise getting a flu shot only in October and November. Now doctors vaccinate through February because it only takes about two weeks to develop an antibody response after the flu shot,” Koller said.

The flu (or influenza) is a highly contagious viral infection that attacks the respiratory system. each year in the U.S. between 5-20 percent of the population contracts the flu. the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) has a universal recommendation this year that children age 6 months and older should get an influenza vaccination.

The CDC also recommends vaccinations for people ages 50 and older and for anyone with a chronic illness such as asthma, diabetes or heart disease. this includes people who have weakened immune systems and those infected with HIV (the virus that causes AIDS).

Flu symptoms tend to come on abruptly and affect the entire body. Symptoms include a high fever, intense chills, body aches, exhaustion and constant, unproductive cough. In our area, flu appears almost only during the winter. If you are experiencing flu-like symptoms, it is best to act fast and speak to your doctor within 12 to 48 hours.

Since 2009, Loyola has required mandatory flu shot for all employees, faculty, medical and nursing students and other allied groups who work or have clinical training at the Loyola’s campus in Maywood and its suburban health centers. for the second consecutive year, more than 99 percent of those covered by the policy received vaccinations. Also, all visitors to Loyola with coughs are being asked to wear masks as are hospital employees who were medically exempt from Loyola’s mandatory flu shot policy.

“Mandating flu shots for all our employees is absolutely the right thing to do,” said Dr. Jorge Parada, director of infection prevention and control at LUHS. “The simple fact is that this is the profession that we have all chosen. the last thing we should be doing is putting our patients at risk when it is totally unnecessary. this is big safety issue.”

As well as the spike in cases of the flu, Loyola and other hospitals are seeing a spike in the number of cases of respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), an infection of the small airways of the lungs that’s also known as bronchiolitis.

“RSV is one of those respiratory viruses that can produce flu-like symptoms,” Parada said. “In adults, it’s generally mild. In young children, especially babies and children with respiratory problems, it can be life threatening and those children require immediate medical attention.”

Like the flu, RSV is highly contagious. it can be spread by physical contact with someone who is infected and through the air by coughing and sneezing. Basic hygiene like the washing your hands and covering your mouth when coughing and sneezing can help prevent the spread of both illnesses.
