A new study published in the journal of the American Gastroenterological Association (AGA) Institute, Clinical Gastroenterology and Hepatology, states that the rate of chronic pancreatitis (CP) caused due to alcohol is lower that the other factors causing the condition. a large subgroup, particularly comprising of women, suffer from CP without any identifiable cause or alcohol-related causes. in this study, alcohol was not considered a factor for chronic pancreatitis. CP is caused due to the inflammation of the pancreas. This causes the digestive enzymes to attack the tissue, resulting in bleeding and tissue damage. the factors which might trigger this condition are smoking, alcohol etc.

The researchers studied the data from the CP patients. 44.5% patients had chronic pancreatitis because of alcohol consumption, 26.9% due to non-alcoholic causes and 28.6% due to unidentifiable reason.Thus, it was observed that more than 50% of the patients did not suffer from CP due to alcohol.

According to Gregory a. Coté, the lead author of the study, the findings will break the myth that all the cases of CP are alcohol induced. Further studies might prove helpful in analyzing genetic and environmental factors responsible for the development of chronic pancreatitis.
