In its early stages, lung cancer typically doesn’t show any physical signs or symptoms. Symptoms of lung cancer normally appear when the cancer is more developed, making it difficult to find early.

Listed below are some of the most common symptoms associated with lung cancer.

A new cough which doesn’t go away

Changes in a “smoker’s cough” or chronic cough

Coughing up blood even in very small amounts

Hoarseness in voice

Shortness of breath and or chest pain

Wheezing

Dramatic unexplained weight loss

Bone pain

Chronic headache

When to see a doctorMake an appointment with your doctor if you have any signs or symptoms that worry you. if you’re a smoker and would like to quit, greatly lowering your risk of getting lung cancer, talk to your doctor about the many options available.

How smoking can cause lung cancerDoctors think smoking causes lung cancer by damaging the cells that line the lungs. When one inhales cigarette smoke, which is full of cancer causing carcinogens, changes in lung tissue begin quickly, almost immediately. Initially your body is capable of repairing this damage, but as you continue to smoke your lungs incur more and more damage. as you continue to smoke, damages cause your cells to begin acting abnormally, and eventually cancer can develop.

The two major types of lung cancerLung cancer is divided into two major types by doctors based on the lung cancer cells appearance under a microscope. Your doctor makes treatment decisions based on which major type of lung cancer you have. the two types of lung cancer are:

Small cell lung cancer – This type of lung cancer usually appears almost only in heavy smokers, and is much less common.

Non-small cell lung cancer – Non-small cell lung cancer is a term for multiple types of lung cancers that act in similar manners. Non-small cell lung cancers include adenocarcinoma, large cell carcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma.

Smoking, heavy drinking, and exposure to harmful chemicals are all things that can put you at risk for developing lung cancer. if you have concern that you could be developing lung cancer, or are experiencing any symptoms, contact your doctor immediately.

Lung cancer typically doesn't cause signs and symptoms in its earliest stages. Signs and symptoms of lung cancer typically occur only when the disease is advanced.

Signs and symptoms of lung cancer may include:

* a new cough that doesn't go away
* changes in a chronic cough or "smoker's cough"
* Coughing up blood, even a small amount
* Shortness of breath
* Chest pain
* Wheezing
* Hoarseness
* Losing weight without trying
* Bone pain
* Headache

When to see a doctor
Make an appointment with your doctor if you have any signs or symptoms that worry you.

If you smoke and want to stop in order to reduce your risk of lung cancer, make an appointment with your doctor. Your doctor can recommend strategies for quitting, such as counseling, medications and nicotine replacement products.

asthma & cancer have no correlation unless you smoke, then you have a higher risk.

A number of factors may increase your risk of lung cancer. some risk factors can be controlled, for instance, by quitting smoking. And other factors can't be controlled, such as your sex. Risk factors for lung cancer include:

* Smoking. Smoking remains the greatest risk factor for lung cancer. Your risk of lung cancer increases with the number of cigarettes you smoke each day and the number of years you have smoked. Quitting at any age can significantly lower your risk of developing lung cancer.
* Exposure to secondhand smoke. even if you don't smoke, your risk of lung cancer increases if you're exposed to secondhand smoke.
* Exposure to radon gas. Radon is produced by the natural breakdown of uranium in soil, rock and water that eventually becomes part of the air you breathe. Unsafe levels of radon can accumulate in any building, including homes. Radon testing can determine whether levels are safe.
* Exposure to asbestos and other chemicals. Workplace exposure to asbestos and other substances known to cause cancer — such as arsenic, chromium, nickel and tar — also can increase your risk of developing lung cancer, especially if you're a smoker.
* Family history of lung cancer. People with a parent, sibling or other first-degree relative with lung cancer have an increased risk of the disease.
* Excessive alcohol use. Drinking more than a moderate amount of alcohol — no more than one drink a day for women or two drinks a day for men — may increase your risk of lung cancer.
* Certain lung diseases. People with certain lung diseases, such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, may have an increased risk of lung cancer.

New research from the Royal Pharmaceutical Society for Lung Cancer Awareness Month shows a low awareness of the key symptoms of lung cancer, the UK’s biggest cancer killer. In the season of winter colds and flu, the Society is advising people not to ignore a persistent cough or chest infection that doesn’t clear up, as it could be a sign of something more serious.

“If you don’t recognise a symptom is important, then you won’t realise you need help”, said Graham Phillips, community pharmacist and Board member of the Royal Pharmaceutical Society.

“many people will repeatedly buy cough medicines or maybe iron tablets for tiredness and a lack of energy. If you find yourself doing this, then ask your pharmacist for advice. We can discuss your symptoms with you and help you understand you may have an underlying problem that needs checking out with your GP,” he added.

“Early detection of lung cancer saves lives. when symptoms are present and recognised at an early stage, treatment is much more likely to be successful. Pharmacists can play a vital role in this by talking to people with the relevant warning signs,” he said.

When asked to name warning signs or symptoms of lung cancer, only 33% of those questioned in a Royal Pharmaceutical Society/YouGov survey identified having a cough as a warning sign, while a further 11% specifically mentioned a persistent cough, which is a key symptom.

Just under half of those surveyed (48%) said breathlessness, breathing difficulties and wheezing were a warning sign, whilst only 29% mentioned having blood in the phlegm or coughing up blood as an indicator. A further 15% mentioned chest or lung pain and 10% mentioned weight loss as symptoms.

& what are the stages of progress?
Thanks!
<3

I dont know the stages but my step grandpa died of it in 2004.

You start to get "night sweats" and you start to shake at random instances during the day. You feel dizzy and have almost flu like symptoms. If you ever get night sweats though you should go to the doctor ASAP. that the biggest sign of it.

that's a loaded question. there are different types of lung cancer and many times, the person isn't aware of it until there are outward signs such as a lump or if something shows up on an x-ray.
see the cancer society web site for staging information

when i was age 3 to about 7 or 8, i lived with my step mom who smoked all day, every day. i didint know at the time how bad it was and i would be by her constantly inhaling 2nd hand smoke. Now im wondering if i should get checked or not.

stupid me, also smoked off and on from 9th to 12th grade, and a few times smoked marijuana.

ive always had problems breathing and such since i was very young and im 18 now, should i get checked, what are the symptoms?

It would be extremely rare, almost never heard of, that a person your age would have lung cancer. The early symptoms of lung cancer are a persistent cough that lasts for weeks. if your breathing difficulties are distressing to you – your family physician can check that out for you with a quick listen through a stethoscope. Stay away from cigarettes and weed – both can cause cancer.

coughing and you can't hardly breathe I hope you go to the doc ,
