Hi so I went to a free health clinic just 1 weeks ago because i lost my health insurance. The main reason I even went there was to get an MMR shot for school because I got the shot too early as a kid, so it didn't count, and while I was there they checked my chart and saw that i didn't get a TB shot in 5 years, apparently i'm suppose to get it every year, but i've been avoiding it with my doctor until i lost my insurance. so they offered to give it to me there with the MMR, after a day or two i developed a lump on the site of the injection and it hurts sometimes, but i went back on the day they told me to come back for blood work. When they saw the lump, they measured it and took some temps and ask if i was coughing or feeling sick, but i wasn't at all. they said i tested positive for TB. I think they infected me, because I was negative just 5 years ago, but now after taking a dose of tb i have it. they told me to take a x ray and do my blood work and the results come out next week. I'm so pissed and so is my family, I think its their fault, is it good to give 2 shots at a time? also they try to blame it on the one i took 5 years ago and on other shots i took as a kid, but thats just bs. after the accident, i haven't develop any bad symptoms, but i 've been going to the bathroom a lot #2 that is, its not normal, it just comes even if i haven't eaten. I'm worried

Yes, it is fine to give the MMR vaccine and place the TB test the same day.

So you went to a free clinic, and the doctors and nurses there that are probably volunteering their time for free took care of you. I don't know why you are blaming them now. There is nothing wrong with placing a TB skin test and giving you an MMR at the same time. The only time restrictions on the TB and MMR would be if they were not done on the same day. if you had received the MMR earlier, not on the same day, you would have had to wait 4-6 weeks for the TB skin test as the MMR can cause a false negative test. But it cannot cause a false positive test and neither one can infect you with TB. For questions about following up on the positive skin test, you could call your local health department.

I've just been to the doctors because i'm coughing up phlegm, waking up in the night in a cold sweat & feeling generally feverish & run down.
He examined my chest & said it sounded all good & healthy.
However, 2 years ago I worked with a child who had severe Tuberculosis. so the doctor said he would consult a specialist TB nurse & let me know what she recommends.
Are there any medical people on here tonight who know anything about TB, and do you think i'm wasting their time when the doctor has said my chest seems fine? thank you.

hello everyone.. i've already read some of the questions which were already have been answered here plus i also did some research. but i'm still wondering and dreading, if i have TB. Some of the symptoms that i've read are:
-fever
-dry cough with some production of mucus
-chest pain
-weakness
-loss of appetite
-weight loss
-difficulty breathing
-coughing up blood
-night sweats

i'm a smoker so i'm actually afraid that i might've TB. i've been coughing for a while now (but it's because i feel a phlegm formation in my throat which itches when i smoke) and when i spit i see a small form of mucus, and sometimes due to coughing my back hurts.

does this mean i have TB?

You do have symptoms of TB but also of other maladies. the only way anyone can tell what the problem may be is for you to go to a Doctor. Now rather than later would be wise

Giving power to councils: Health Secretary Andrew Lansley

Immigration is fuelling a soaring number of tuberculosis infections, the Health Secretary said yesterday.

Andrew Lansley said that the 30-year high in cases of TB was caused by people coming to Britain from countries where the disease is prevalent, such as those in sub-Saharan Africa.

According to the most recent figures there were 9,040 infections last year, the highest recorded since 1979 when there were 9,266 cases.

The disease, caused by bacteria, infects the lungs. Symptoms include coughing, fever and weight loss.

It can be fatal if it is untreated and there are around 350 deaths every year.

But victims can carry the disease for several years without having any symptoms – and this is one of the reasons it spreads so quickly

Figures published last month by the Health Protection Agency show that it is particularly prevalent in impoverished inner city areas such as London, Birmingham, Leeds and Manchester.

Mr Lansley told the House of Commons: ‘The rise has occurred mainly in people infected in countries where TB is common who go on to develop active TB later in life.’

He added that a Government plan to give councils more powers to monitor public health – including diseases such as TB – will help prevent future.

‘Many of these local authorities in Birmingham or Manchester or Leeds will be well placed as cities to respond to any incidences of TB or outbreaks of TB on a preventative basis using their powers as public health authorities.

‘The treatment services for individual patients will be commissioned through GP consortia but the identification and preventative work is a public health responsibility so to that extent I think we will be better placed to deal with that in future.’

Mr Lansley also said that the Government was funding a charity called TB Alert to raise awareness of the problem among health care professionals in London.

The country with the highest TB rate is Swaziland, in sub-Saharan Africa, with India and the Philippines also recording high numbers of cases.

Figures show that London had 3,440 cases of TB last year – which is 38 per cent of the total number of infections.

Up to 1,018 cases were recorded in the West Midlands, followed by 816 cases in the North West.

In addition the number of cases of resistant TB – which cannot be treated with a course of antibiotics – has doubled in the past decade.

Experts say bacteria are becoming resistant to the treatment because patients stop taking the drugs too soon.

Last month Dr Ibrahim Abubakar, who is head of TB surveillance at the HPA, said: ‘We are concerned to see that cases of TB are at their highest levels since the 1970s.

‘Tuberculosis is a preventable and treatable condition but, if left untreated, it can be life threatening.

‘The key to reducing levels of TB is early diagnosis and appropriate treatment.’

The cause of it is a bacteria called Mycobacterium tuberculosis. the symptoms include, "fever, chills, anorexia, weight loss, and local swelling." However, those symptoms do not automatically point to TB. "Tuberculosis osteomyelitis is treated with the same anti-TB medications used for the pulmonary form of tuberculosis," which are usually the antibiotics isoniazid and rifampin.
