this morning when i woke up i started feeling like my mouth was tickeling and numbing as well as the tongue. i have a strange taste and it also feels like it dries out.(not to the point of constant thirst) it starts in the lips and goes to the tongue. there are no dark or light spots but it just feels weird. any ideas anyone?

Food Allergies, Symptoms of Food Allergies and Prevention

Quite a number of people suffer from allergic reactions. There are countless of possible allergens and they can bring about the onset of symptoms when one develops a reaction. one of the conditions in which many people suffer from is food allergies. with food allergies, one has a hypersensitivity to food, or one of its components.

An allergy is a severe reaction of the body’s immune system. The immune system goes into overdrive when there is a perceived threat to the body. In this case, the body perceives an ingredient in the food, like protein, as potentially harmful and goes all out to attack this ingredient and you, in the process.

When it comes to symptoms of food allergy, different people may have different set of symptoms. However, most of them will feel a swelling of tongue and throat along with having a tingling sensation in the mouth. Difficult in breathing, vomiting, diarrhea, drop in blood pressure and abdominal cramps may also be experienced by some people. Here, it is essential to mention that severe allergic reactions can cause death because they can affect cardiovascular system as well.

Food allergies happen when a person’s immune system believes that something he or she ate is harmful to the body. In an attempt to protect the body, the immune system produces antibodies, called immunoglobulin E (IgE), to that food. Those antibodies then cause mast cells (allergy cells in the body) to release chemicals, one of which is histamine, into the bloodstream.

An allergic reaction can be manifested in different ways and in varying intensities in different people. some allergies may show obvious symptoms while others may not. some people may react immediately once exposed to the allergen while in other people, it may take several hours for the symptoms to be manifested.

There seems to be about eight food allergies found. These foods include peanuts, milk, eggs, tree nuts, soy, wheat, and fish and shell fish. Each of these food allergies can be life threatening if not treated immediately. In addition, there are also people with allergies to fruits, vegetables and even seeds. some of these common food allergies are seen most often in children.

So what is a food allergy sufferer to do? The first course of action is to educate themselves on labeling practices. Knowing where to look in a label for allergen information is a good first step. Avoiding foods that are labeled with the allergen is the primary method of treatment, since there is no cure for food allergy. Next, the food allergy sufferer must learn about ingredients that could contain allergens. for example, milk protein can appear under many labels and milk protein allergy can be caused by casein and whey.

Food allergies often result in food cravings. This seems to be a controversial statement but it is a fact accepted by medical establishment. This kind of allergy is called type B allergy and means food intolerance. Such intolerance can lead to weight gain, bloating, fatigue, water retention, etc. some foods we crave will not necessarily make us fat, but others can be major contributors to weight gain.

A few months ago a friend of mine mentioned that they had just been to the E.R. for treatment for a cut sustained by a piece of glass.  my friend said that the nurse had asked whether they were “up to date” on the tetanus vaccination; and when he said “no,” the nurse clucked her tongue and immediately insisted on giving my friend a tetanus shot, citing it as a necessary treatment for his wound.

HOW MANY THINGS DO I HAVE A PROBLEM WITH HERE?

1.  Tetanus is a condition caused by infection with the bacterium Clostridium tetani, which thrives in unsterile anaerobic environments (the most common place to find it is in manure).  Read:  it does not like oxygen, and lives in filthy places.  yes, the garage is dirty, but it’s probably not smeared in feces…  =)  C. tetani is introduced into the body by a deep puncture wound from a dirty or unsterile object, and its growth depends on two things:  (1) lack of oxygen, and (2) presence of nouirishment.  Washing a wound well not only probably removes the bacterium, but also floods an area with oxygen (which is present in water).  In fact, “proper wound management” is credited with much of the success of avoidance or treatment of tetanus (see #4).

2.  about whether someone is “up to date”:  how about asking a more relevant question, like, does the person know whether they have immunity to tetanus?  having the vaccination and being immune are not one and the same.  Immunity is the intended RESULT of vaccination, but it is seldom if ever actually tested – it is assumed.  you can have a vaccine, and NOT be immune (no one told you that, did they?) because not all vaccines “work.”  actually, about 20% DO NOT, sometimes more, sometimes less, depending on the specific vaccine.

3.  Would the tetanus vaccine actually do a person any GOOD if they had come into contact with tetanus?  Honestly, probably not.  Immunity after vaccination is not immediate (oh, no one told you that either?).  The biological process by which the body recognizes the “bug” and creates immunity to it takes time (days to weeks) and, actually, adequate immunity usually requires not one but TWO exposures to the bug.  So really, if you have a deep puncture wound and you’re worried about tetanus, the vaccine provides you only with false security, and, to boot, a load of toxins delivered directly to your bloodstream (see #5).  The tetanus vaccine is considered by many healthcare providers to be the “dirtiest” of the vaccines, in fact, due to its chemical composition.

4.  and here’s a gem:

From 1990 through 1995 there have been an average of 49.6 cases of tetanus per year in the United States. nearly twenty — five percent (24.8%) of those who contracted acute tetanus had at least one dose of the vaccine and more than twelve percent (12.4%) of the patients were fully vaccinated, with three or more doses of tetanus.  (To be clear, this data indicates that in these cases, the vaccination failed to confer immunity). According to data from the National Vaccine Advisory Committee of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, tetanus vaccination compliance rates hover around 50%, depending on age group….  meaning that at any given time, about half the population has NOT been vaccinated against tetanus.  And yet the actual occurrance of tetanus is very, very low. According to CDC data, one in approximately 1 in 5,198,200 people contracts tetnaus. There is a 20% mortality rate for tetanus if properly treated. That means that approx 1 in 25,000,000 people will die of tetanus in any given year. about 1800 people per year are struck by lightning and there is a 25% morality rate for this event. 1 in 143,240 are struck by lightning and 1 in 573,000 die. This is a lot of numbers BUT:  you are 44 times more likely to die from lightning than from tetanus.

5.  OK, if the odds of contracting or dying from tetanus are very low in the States in this day and age, what about the risks of having the tetanus vaccination?  Wait, no one told you there are risks?  they just leaned in menacingly with the needle and told you to bend over, because this shot is absolutely necessary and they’re not letting you out of the room without it?  Guess what:  there is a risk ANY time you introduce chemicals or pharmaceuticals into your body.  perhaps because…  drumroll please…  they’re not meant to BE there.  well, here are some known possible adverse reactions to tetanus vaccination:  moderate soreness at the site of injection (75% of cases), prolonged vomiting, prolonged diarrhea, and more flu like symptoms (approximately 1 in 100), or more severe effects such as tingling of the hands/feet, hearing problems, trouble swallowing, muscle weakness, seizures, or anaphylactic shock.  Wow, shoot me up, right?

It’s your decision.  but given the odds and the information above, I know that I’d rather clean the wound properly and thoroughly and depend on my body and my immune system (which I keep running as well as possible by eating well, hydrating, sleeping, exercising, and getting adjusted) to destroy any infection than rely on a shot that could make me a LOT worse.

In the end, who do you trust, the guy with the needle who’s not giving you all of the information, or the intelligence within your own body, that knows how to protect and heal you?

Dr. Eric’s Note:  I found this appropriate as a patient of mine emailed me about a week ago, asking about my opinion on getting a tetanus shot after getting cut on a trunk being stored in an attic.  The mis-information in the world of VACCINATION is ridiculous.  For those who don’t remember Dr. Haas, she worked with me for about two years, and has a PhD in biochemistry with post doctorate work done at Harvard.  she is bright, and a very well educated bright.

Bruised bars is usually caused by either a poorly fitted bit, or rough handling. my horses have never had it, so I'd ask the vet or trainer to check it out.

Symptoms: not happy about having a bit in its mouth, to see any signs of it is a bit difficult for a beginner, place the hand in the mouth and hold the tongue to one side you might see some bruising but not always visible. if you do manage to get a bit in the mouth of a horse with this it will start to show distress by shaking its head etc.
Bruised Bar is not to be mistaken for bad teeth which can have similar symptoms if his back teeth need rasping.
Causes.
Ill fitting bit or rough handling.
Treatment:
Rest mouth, use a Hackiemore commonly known as a bit-less bridal THIS MUST BE FITTED BY A SADDLER OR SOMEONE WITH SIMILAR KNOWLEDGE OF HORSES, a badly fitted one can be a danger to the horse and effect its breathing.

Equine Curb: is a type of ligament damage. the the ligament effected is just below the hock at the back of the hind leg.

A curb is a type of bit. It is considered a western bit and it is solid all the way across and has shanks the drop down on the side for the reins. It works on leverage and pushes up in the roof of the horses motuh.
Nruised bars in the mouth would be from a rider pulling to hard and causing the horses mouth to bruise.
To fix it do not ride in a bit for a week or two and then used something more mild or teach the rider how not to jerk the horse in the mouth so hard.

Bruised bars are caused byheavy handed riding – yanking on thebit or keeping your balance by using teh reins, etc. the bars are the space between a horse's chewing teeth and biting teeth. (Handy place for a bit – that's where the bit rests.) Treatment is rest from abusing the mouth!!
A curb bit can make this spot tender as well. A curb bit has longer shanks and works by squeezing the horse's lower jaw between the curb strap or chain (under the chin) and the bit (on the horse's tongue) and places perssure on the poll (behind the ears) from the bridle as well.
Using a lighter bit, maybe a snaffle, will help alleviate the bar pain and damage. too much bruised bars and the horse will become "hard-mouthed" – meaning the sensitivity of the bars and outh have been deadened by abuse and the horse is not as responsive.

(How long does it take?) I ask it because I found a cat who had a throaty voice and a floppy tongue and he drooled a little bit but he had a good appetite and he was very kind and there was no other problem with him during 5-6 days, but 2 days ago he disappeared.
Could he have rabies or must he show with rabies other symtomps in these 5-6 days?

omg what ever you do don't touch it cause if he scratches you then you will need to catch it take it to the hospital to be tested for rabies cause if he does and you catch rabies they give you all those shots in your tummy ouch ( if you don't catch it after getting bit or scratch you will have to get the shots in tummy any ways just to be on the safe side that's what they do.

Wow, this would scare me. Cats die within 10 days of being able to pass the virus in their saliva to humans. so, your cat could be potentially dangerous. the safest thing to do is to go to the dr. and get post exposure prophylactic treatment. in the history of time 2 people survived rabies, TWO. one was >100 years ago, so they probably never really had rabies, they had a wrong diagnosis. the other person survived after MONTHS in a medically induced coma, Months. go to the doctor. if you find the dead cat, you will need to submit it to the health department ASAP. Don't mess around with this.

You NEED to call the Health Department. He could give the rabbies to another cat or to a human. are you sure he's not dehydrated? sometimes that's why cats stick out their tongues. I gave my cats a flea treatment one time that made them foam at the mouth because they licked themselves. I was afraid of people seeing them and jumping to conclusions. please call the health dept so that if it is rabbies it will not pass it on to someone or something. Thank you!

If he did not bite you or drool on you or your other animals then you should be fine, however if there is ANY question about exposure you should contact your doctor immediately for preventative shots. Rabies in humans cannot be successfully treated–99.9 percent die and the remainder are severely brain damaged. Rabies comes in two forms: a rapidly progressing form that would have showed other symptoms in the 5-6 days and a "dumb" form that can take 6 months or more to develop symptoms. Read through the sites below for more accurate information.

It is unlikely that the symptoms you describe were from rabies. first thoughts would be a broken jaw. Cats with rabies die within 3-4 days of showing symptoms.

I think 10 days. When I worked for a vet and someone brought in a dog for biting someone, they had to be quarentined for 10 days, then we would know they were okay.

A rabid animal won't eat or drink, they can't. the virus freezes their throat muscles.

Your cat likely had mouth issues, either a cracked jaw or broken or infected teeth. Cindy is the only one here who is knowledgeable about the rabies virus.

Cats are rarely carriers of rabies, on the CDC site for the latest year they have full figures, in 2009 only 210 cats in the entire country were recorded as having rabies. considering there are close to 100,000 feral cats just in our city alone, you can see that 210 is an extremely low number for this.

I just wanted to know what the symptoms of cellulitis of the mouth or oral cellulitis – I've tried looking it up but can't find a descripton.

Cellulitis is inflammation of the cells and is most often times caused by irritation to the tissues in the mouth (this could be the buccal area or inside the cheek, tongue or soft palate). Rinsing with one part Maalox and one part peroxide will help. In the meantime, apply OraGel to alleviate the pain until it is gone. also avoid hot and spicy foods as they will only aggravate it further and take longer to heal. You also need to see your dentist to confirm your conclusion of cellulitis. I have to wonder where you came up with that diagnosis. See your dentist and play it safe!

My 1 & 3 year old have it. I have a low immune system (& have some sores on my tongue), but do not have all the typical symptoms that they have.
