Claire Osborn, 37, felt a tickle in her throat moments before the mass – which she described as looking “like a strip of liver” – came out, reports The Daily Mail. Once a doctor performed a biopsy on the mass, it was revealed the woman had a metastatic adenocarcinoma in the back of her throat.

Osborn was given only a 50 percent chance of survival after being diagnosed with the aggressive cancer that grew in the back of her throat, saying the cancer had likely spread to other parts of her body. Follow-up scans, however, failed to detect any tumors. Doctors removed some cancerous cells from Osborn’s tongue and her doctor gave her a clean bill of health.

“I was totally flabbergasted,” Osborn told the Daily Mail. “If I hadn’t coughed it up, the tumor would have grown and almost certainly spread to my other organs.”

The woman’s head and neck surgeon, Dr. Gary Walton, a doctor at the University Hospital Coventry in the U.K., told the Mail that he suspected the cancer had spread but the body scans showed she was clear of cancer.

“We suspect the tumor grew on a stalk at the back of her mouth which is very difficult to detect,” Walton said. “Somehow she dislodged this and the stalk snapped and she coughed up the tumor.”

“It is very uncommon to cough up cancer, but she did it,” he said.

Dr. Edward Kim, chief of head and neck medical oncology at MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, told ABC News the woman’s coughing fit might have acted like a surgeon’s scalpel.

“It’s very rare that these types of tumors don’t require other treatments beyond surgery,” Kim, who was not involved in the woman’s care, told ABC News. He said metastatic adenocarcinomas often need to be treated with radiation and chemotherapy.

According to the National Cancer Institute, tobacco and alcohol use, and HPV are risk factors for head and neck cancers. Typical symptoms include a lump or sore in the mouth or throat that doesn’t heal, difficulty swallowing, a sore throat that doesn’t go away, or hoarseness in the voice.

More than 52,000 men and women in the U.S. are expected to be diagnosed with head and neck cancers this year.

NEW YORK (Reuters Health) – Screening mammography is less accurate at spotting breast cancer if a woman has had the disease before, according to a new government-funded study.

Breast cancer survivors are more likely to develop new tumors than women without a history of breast cancer, but little is known about screening in this group.

The new results, published in the Journal of the American Medical Association, are based on information from the largest mammography registry in the U.S.

They show screening does help detect breast cancer in survivors, with 7 cancers found per 1,000 screens compared to 4 per 1,000 screens in women who never had the disease.

But the procedure also missed tumors 11 percent more often in the survivors, even though these women had higher numbers of extra x-rays and other radiology tests done after their mammograms.

Survivors were also one percent more likely to be told the mammogram might be showing a cancer, when the woman actually didn't have the disease.

"These findings and additional studies that are likely to be stimulated from this report should lead to improved (radiology routines)" for breast cancer survivors, screening expert Robert a. Smith of the American Cancer Society (ACS) said in a statement.

About one in eight American women will develop breast cancer during their lifetime, but the chance of dying from the disease has been dropping recently and is now less than three percent, according to the ACS.

Experts disagree about when and how often women should get mammograms. The ACS recommends once a year in women 40 and older, while the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force, a federal expert panel, says once every two years in women over 50.

The new study, led by Dr. Les Irwig of the University of Sydney in Australia, was a joint work of American and Australian researchers.

They compared an equal number of screening mammograms — nearly 120,000 altogether — from survivors and comparable women without a history of breast cancer.

Within a year of screening, 655 tumors were found in survivors, compared to 342 in the other women.

Cancers detected by symptoms, and not screening, were more than twice as common in survivors than in the other women.

The ACS's Smith, who was not involved in the study, said the findings underscore the "importance of remaining vigilant about new symptoms and the importance of reporting breast changes immediately" to a doctor.

The authors call for more studies in breast cancer survivors — especially younger ones and those with very dense breasts — as there is no evidence so far that extra screening efforts in these women will improve their survival.

LONDON (Reuters) – Fewer than 1.3 million people will die from cancer in Europe this year as death rates from the disease fall, researchers said Wednesday, except that more women are dying of lung cancer in every country except Britain.

The downward trend in cancer death rates in the region is being driven mainly by falls in breast cancer mortality in women, and lung and colorectal cancer in men.

But the overall number of deaths is likely to remain similar to four years ago because populations are aging and expanding, the researchers said, and the number of women dying from lung cancer is increasing steadily everywhere except in Britain.

"Despite these favorable trends in cancer death rates in Europe the number of cancer deaths remains approximately stable, due to the aging of the population," said Carlo La Vecchia of the University of Milan in Italy, who led the study.

Cancer death rates in wealthy countries are being reduced by better, more targeted medicines and wider use of screening programs to detect tumors earlier, making them easier to treat before they spread to other parts of the body.

The researchers plan to repeat the study to predict cancer deaths for 2012 because accurately predicting death rates can help countries plan allocation of resources and strategies for preventing, treating and managing cancer.

For this year, La Vecchia noted that there was a gap between lower cancer death rates in western Europe, and higher rates in central and eastern parts of the region.

"this is likely to persist for the foreseeable future," he said in a statement on the findings.

La Vecchia's team used a new mathematical model for predicting cancer mortality. they looked at overall rates in the 27-member European Union and at individual rates in six countries: France, Germany, Italy, Poland, Spain and Britain.

Their findings, published in the cancer journal, Annals of Oncology, predicted there would be 1,281,466 cancer deaths in the EU in 2011 compared with 1,256,001 in 2007.

Converted into world standardized rates per 100,000 of the population, the figures show that in 2011 there will be a fall since 2007 from 153.8 per 100,000 to 142.8 per 100,000 in men, and from 90.7 to 85.3 in women — a drop of seven percent in men and six percent in women.

But trends in lung cancer were worrying. Britain has had the highest death rates in women for a decade and is now seeing a leveling off, the researchers said, but female lung cancer death rates are rising everywhere else in the region.

World standardized death rates from lung cancer in women in the EU will rise to 13.12 per 100,000 in 2011 from 12.55 in 2007, they found, and lung cancer has overtaken breast cancer as the top cause of cancer death in women in Poland and Britain.
