My mom has ulcerative colitis.

Here I sit from the hospital once again. My mom was just here a month ago, and now we have been here again for the last 2 weeks. She tried the Remicade and Prednisone and it didn’t help at all.

So here we are today, they have marked my mom’s stomach with where the stoma is going to be, and we sit and wait for surgery. It’s going to be today or tonight sometime, and I am so nervous! They said she is urgent so they said if they have to do the surgery at midnight, they will. They said they have to cut her right down her stomach and can’t do the 3 smaller incisions. Not sure why, but at this point, I just nodd my head when the team comes in. I just want my mom back, I hope she isn’t in shock when she first sees the bag and realizes that her life will be different again. I’ll let you all know how she does, I wish I could just sleep for the next 24 hours and wake up to some really good news!

Chronic ulcerative colitis is a severe, prolonged inflammation of the colon or large bowel in which ulcers from in the walls of the colon, resulting in the passage of bloody stools mixed with pus and mucus. Diarrhea is common also in this condition, the true cause as yet unknown. some virus or bacteria may have obtained a foothold in the wall of the bowel and also may be greatly aggravated because of severe nervous strain and tension.

Scattered bleeding points appear on the inner surface of the bowel, followed by abscess that burrow between the layers in the wall of the colon. This causes the inner lining of the colon break down, resulting in hemorrhage, followed by more ulceration. all this gives a rough, cobblestone appearance to the lining of the bowel. at the same time, scar tissue in the colon reduce normal flexibility and interferes with the digestive process.

Chronic ulcerative colitis usually begins in the lower part of the bowel and spreads upward. The disease seems to attack young adults most frequently. Rest the bowel as much as possible. This will help to preserve the patient in a good state of nutrition so he can combat the disease. Strict bed rest with plenty of fluids and a high protein diet are very important in this condition. Food should be attractively prepared and the patient encourage to eat. The diet should contain at least 2500 calories a day, given three or four general meals. Patients who are very ill should be hospitalized and given necessary fluids by vein.

Many doctors give vitamin K tablets to increase the clotting power of the blood and thus help control the hemorrhage from the bowel. The combination of paregoric and tincture of belladonna will help to reduce the frequency of bowel movements and relieve the intestinal cramps. Sulfathalidine and sulfaguanadine tablets or Azulfidine tablets are often of value in helping to control the bacteria growth within the bowel, three tablets trice a day being the usual dose. Severely ill patient should also be given penicillin, but other antibiotics are not advised because they may irritate the bowel.

Emily Morgan has a passion for swimming and is unflappably positive. she also has ulcerative colitis, a condition many people don’t know about and many others don’t want to talk about.

Not only is Emily not afraid to talk about her disease, but she hasn’t let it slow her down.

An avid swimmer, her room has a desk plastered with ribbons and covered in gold trophies.  

“She’s real open about it and willing to talk,” said Jody Morgan, Emily’s mom. “her motto was she wasn’t going to let it beat her.”

“if anything, I’ve tried to turn it into a positive experience,” Emily said.

2011 HONORED HERO

This year she is being honored by the Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation of America at its Take Steps walk.

“a bright, vivacious teenager, Emily embodies great strength and courage,” said Monica Wissbaum, publicity chairwoman for the Charlotte Chapter of the CCFA Take Steps Walk. “rather than let her illness define her, Emily has embraced it, and now wants to educate and empower others who face the same diagnosis she did.”

Wissbaum said Emily was recommended as the 2011 honored hero by the Levine Children’s specialty center.

“she was chosen because of her involvement with the CCFA and because she’s an amazing young lady with an amazing story and a positive outlook,” Wissbaum said.

‘WE DIDN’T KNOW ANYTHING ABOUT IT’

In 2008, Emily said she started having different symptoms, which included severe stomach aches.

Her doctor referred her to a Charlotte specialist and after going through several tests, she was told she had something called ulcerative colitis.

“We didn’t know anything about it,” Emily said.

She immediately started taking medications, but after a month or two, she said it was as if her body became immune to them and they would stop working.

She had to deal with constant flare-ups, which would cause stomachaches and constant trips to the bathroom.

Emily said the seriousness of her illness didn’t really hit her until she was hospitalized in the ninth grade due to dehydration and anemia.

She said she was admitted to the Levine’s Children’s Hospital right before her 16th birthday.

At the thought of spending her birthday in the hospital, Morgan said she had a moment of self-pity.

“why me?” she said. “I never did anything wrong to deserve this.”

It began to impact the things she loved.

“It got to the point she was having a hard time swimming,” said Jody Morgan.

She didn’t feel like hanging out with friends.

“It was affecting my everyday life,” Emily said.

After a flare-up, she would be given a higher dose of steroids. Emily said the drugs caused side effects, including weight gain.

SURGERY

Eventually, when medications were exhausted, a trip to Chapel Hill for a second opinion brought up the option of surgery.

The two-phase surgery would include several weeks with a colostomy bag before the second phase, when it would be removed and a new section of small intestine is reattached in place of her colon.

Emily decided to go for it.

The first surgery took place during summer break. she doesn’t remember much about her hospital stay other than the pain.

“That was the longest summer ever,” she said.

Emily said she rested, took an online class and recovered from surgery.

The second phase took place in August and was much easier.

“I got back into swimming a month later,” she said.

100 PERCENT

Although she’s still anemic, Emily doesn’t have to take medications other than vitamins.

“It’s the best decision I ever made,” she said. “a year ago, I didn’t know what it was to feel 100 percent. I never knew you could feel that good.”

Emily said now she is focused on raising support for the upcoming walk and has already raised more than $2,000.

“even though my disease is under control, that doesn’t mean I don’t want to help others in their fight against inflammatory bowel disease,” she said. “I’m walking because I want to raise awareness and encourage teens like me to never give up.”

Jody Morgan said the community support has been fantastic.

As for the future, Emily said she is interested in a career in pediatric gastroenterology.

Although she has had her moments of self-pity, overall she has accepted her diagnosis and has made the best of it.

“”I think it’s made my family closer,” Emily said. “We’ll talk about anything now.”

Colin Sweetland, 11, is now enjoying the typical life of a fifth-grader — looking forward to when the bell rings at 3 p.m. so he can play with friends or rush home to practice his chess moves, the trombone or strum his guitar.But Colin has experienced and survived an ordeal most young children have not. now, approximately three years into recovery from surgery for ulcerative colitis, Colin began experiencing severe symptoms from the disease in 2006, when he was just 6 years old. Ulcerative colitis and Crohn’s disease are digestive disorders of the intestines. The illnesses are also collectively known as inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). Ulcerative colitis is the inflammation of the inner lining of the colon (or large intestine), while Crohn’s disease effects all layers of the intestines and may occur in both the small intestine and colon. according to the Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation of America, an estimated 1.4 million Americans summer from the IBD and approximately 30,000 new cases are diagnosed each year. But thanks to a surgery Colin underwent in December 2007, Colin is all but cured from a disease that caused anemia, severe abdominal pain and rapid weight loss, among other symptoms. Colin’s Mom, Heidi Sweetland, said that by the time Colin had his surgery, he was down to 45 pounds, suffering form frequent abdominal pain and was so anemic he had had three blood transfusions. “He was in a lot of pain,” Sweetland said, adding that it was also taking a toll on her. “To sit there and watch your child suffer with this disease and not be able to do anything is unbearable,” Sweetland. “I felt so helpless.”

The walk is on may 14. Registration begins at 4 p.m. a Derryfield Park in Manchester and walk begins at 5:30 p.m. This year marks the third year Colin and his Mom are participating in the walk, which averages between 400 and 500 participants each year. for the past few years, Colin has been an “Honored Local Hero,” during the walk. But this will mark the first year Colin will kick off the walk by giving a speech. Money raised for the walk goes toward the Foundation’s research as well summer camp programs for children with IBD. To that end, on April 12, from 5 to 9 p.m., there is a fundraiser for Colin and the walk at Patrick’s Pub and Eatery in Gilford. Sweetland, said that when Colin was diagnosed with ulcerative colitis in the summer of 2006, he had been suffering from worsening symptoms for several months.”He was rushed to hospital,” Sweetland said, after his father, who is divorced from Sweetland, discovered blood in his stool. a year-and-a-half later, when Colin was eight, he underwent a colectomy. a colectomy is the surgical removal of the colon, cures ulcerative colitis.according to the Mayo Clinic, Ileoanal pouch anastomosis (more commonly called J-pouch surgery) is newest form colectomy and it allows patients to not have to have a permanent outside colostomy bag. It involves removing the large intestine (or colon) and taking a portion of the small investing and turning into a pouch to hold the body’s waste until it can eliminated normally.Sweetland said now, roughly three years after the surgery, Colin’s symptoms are all but cured. he still has to take anti-diarrhea medication, and he is more prone to infection.he also takes fiber supplements. But this nothing compared to amount of medications he had to take just after surgery. Sweetland said Colin was on some 30 different types of medication. The Surgery was done at Massachusetts General Hospital, Sweetland said, praising the doctor who did it. Colin could not eat regular food for three-and-a-half weeks after the surgery, so Sweetland said he devoted his first meal of crackers. Sweetland said while he was at hospital, before an after the surgery, he met many other children with the disease. until then, she said she and her son were not aware of too many other children with the disease. “That’s why we now do the walk, to help inform people about IBD and that effects thousands of people, including hundreds of children in the new England area. she said for both children and adults, it’s disease that no one talks about because of the type o symptoms involved, which some consider embarrassing. “It’s the silent disease nobody wants to talk about,” Sweetland said.

I am facing a pretty tough battle with UC right now…I believe the SCD diet works, but as for me right now, I have to have the Remicade along with a strict diet.

I didn’t really have many questions at the moment. if any of you out there are fighting this battle and feel hopeless at times..I feel for you. I want to know if depression can make ulcerative colitis symptoms worse or cause the person to get out of remission of this terrible disease?

Depression makes everything worse but I do sympathise about this debilitating problem. It is very difficult to remain positive when you are struggling with this.

Can you tell your doctor how you are feeling and ask if there is any new progress in treating this illness?

I would think it can make the symptons worse. I was diagnose with UC at age 20. Soo even though I was in alot of pain & really ill I maintain faith & a sense of humor. I am now 27 & good. I have never have any flare ups & or remissions since then. I would say just stay positive, join a group with others with UC & have family & friends to support you.
