A bad cough, sneezing, and congestion: we try to avoid these symptoms at all costs but thousands of adults still go without the recommended vaccinations every year.

Studies show only one-third of adults take the flu shot during the season. And other more dangerous diseases are also being put on the back burner.

The most forgotten illness is chickenpox.  It’s not just for kids.  In fact, adults are 10 times more likely to be hospitalized when they have chicken pox than are children. the Centers for Disease Control recommends two doses of the vaccine if you’ve never had it.

If you’re 60 or older, you’re not off the hook.  one million adults get shingles every year. It’s caused by the same virus as chickenpox.  It stays dormant for years and can reactivate, causing severe pain. the shingles vaccine is recommended for all adults over 60.

Finally, whooping cough. For years one shot as a child was considered enough, but doctors say it’s becoming more of an adult problem.  Doctors suggest adults, especially parents, have one Tdap vaccine followed by a tetanus booster every 10 years.

Your doctor should review your status with you every check-up.  Blood tests can show if you need the vaccine for some types of diseases, but the best best is to just get re-vaccinated. Experts say even if you’ve taken the shot in the past, it won’t harm you.

in the USA alone, there are approximately 300,000 severe influenza cases that require hospitalization every year resulting in approximately 40,000 deaths. Expert physician advice suggests that the dosage form should be a high strength solution suitable for “piggy-back” incorporation into the standard IV fluid supplement system that is commonly used in hospitalized patients. Since current influenza treatments have limited effectiveness in these patients because of the severity of the infection and the stage of progression, there is a significant unmet medical need for the treatment of hospitalized influenza patients, which include immunocompromised patients.

NV-INF-1 promises to be a highly effective anti-influenza drug, based on the extremely high efficacy observed in animal studies, and the Company believes that it would receive rapid and widespread acceptance for the treatment of hospitalized patients with severe influenza.

The Company is planning the out-patient treatment as a single injection that a medical office can easily administer when the patient goes for the first clinical visit. a single course treatment for out-patients is a highly sought after goal in influenza therapeutics. During the 2009 H1N1 “swine flu” pandemic, approximately 61 million cases of out-patient influenza were estimated in the USA alone.

DEATHS from asthma and the prevalence of the disease among five to 34-year-olds have declined substantially over the past decade, despite concern among experts the condition is still poorly managed by GPs.

The latest Australian Institute of Health and Welfare data on the disease shows two million people have asthma and the mortality rate is the fourth-highest in the developed world.

Experts are worried that fewer than 9 per cent of those who see their general practitioner with an asthma problem are given an asthma management plan or encouraged to use preventer medication, despite this being recommended practice.

Anastasia Savvas, 10, who was diagnosed with asthma as a toddler, thought she had outgrown the condition until a virus triggered an attack last year that left her hospitalised for three nights.

"It surprised me. It came just like that, out of the blue, after she had no symptoms for five years," says Anastasia’s mother, Sophie, who had difficulty getting a diagnosis from several GPs.

Ms Savvas says her daughter is managing well, using a preventer medication four times a day.

The prevalence of asthma among five to 34-year-olds declined by more than 25 per cent between 2001 and 2008 but remained stable in adults aged 35 years and over, the AIHW report Asthma in Australia shows. there were 411 deaths from asthma in 2009 but the mortality rate dropped by 45 per cent between 1997 and 2009.

Indigenous Australians and people living in areas of lower socio-economic status are more likely to be hospitalised for asthma than those in more wealthy areas, the report shows.

Guy Marks, who helped produce the report, says the causes of asthma and the reasons the rate of disease went up and down remain a mystery.

The reduction in prevalence of the disease and improved treatments were partly responsible for the reductions in the death rate, said Professor Marks, who is from the Australian Centre for Asthma Monitoring.

The chairman of Asthma Australia’s medical committee, Simon Bowler, said the report was good news because it showed fewer Australians were suffering asthma symptoms and fewer people were being hospitalised and dying from the disease.

However, he said the decline in asthma had undermined the hypothesis that the disease was caused by the lack of exposure to bugs and dirt in the first 12 months of a child’s life.

"It remains one of the mysteries of our time and it is frustrating we don’t know the cause," mr Bowler said.

The dog is 12 weeks old (has all it's shots) and is lethargic, vomitting and has diarrhea.
I believe he was exposed to an area were the virus was a few weeks ago, but he wasn't exposed to a dog with parvo. He was first exposed to the area on Thursday (6 days ago).

Is this DEFINATLEY parvo, or are there other options?

you should definetely check up with your vet. I had a 3 month old rot that died 2 days ago of parvo. monday it just started to where it wouldn't come to us when we called it or play, or eat, or drink. we took it to the doctor and he told us it had tape-worms and that it could be easily fixed. the next morning he called me and said that "piggy" the rot had parvo. It's not the disease that cuases them to die or act the way it does, its just dehydration and starvation. I would seriously go and get it checked out. I wish I would've before piggy died.

It does sound like Parvo, but Corona has the very same symptoms. It could also be Cocci, or Giardia.or Salmonella…only a poop smear at the vet's can diagnose for certain..

It sounds like Parvo, but it could also have a severe worm infestation, bacterial infestation (like giardia or coccidia), or HGE (hemorrhageic gastroentritis)… all of these will KILL your pup if they are not treated.

You need to get your dog to the vet TODAY and have it properly diagnosed. Remember to take a sample of its "poop" with you for testing.

does his or her diarrhea have blood in it? are you sure its not been poised?

please dont let your dog suffer with this, he needs to go to the vet today, sometimes if they catch it early on they can save them. it does sound like parvo, but it could be distemper, hook worms, and there are several other diseases that are curable if caught early. so please take him to the vet

Your puppy has not completed the vaccination schedule. It's highly likely that since he was in an area where Parvo was that he's contracted this deadly virus. You need to take him to the vet IMMEDIATELY.

Get the dog tested asap!!!!! if it has parvo everything you own needs to be disinfected. There are treatments for parvo but they are expensive and not guaranteed

I heard they were caused by different viruses. also, what causes achiness in stomach flu? Is it just the virus or is it from dehydration? and lastly, does the flu shot only prevent and help with flu or does it also help to prevent the stomach flu as well? Thanks.

Most HPV infections have no signs or symptoms. so someone can be infected and pass the disease on to another person without knowing. however, some people do get visible warts.

People often don't have any symptoms from genital warts — the warts usually do not hurt or itch, which is one reason why people may not know they have them. Doctors can diagnose warts by examining the skin closely (sometimes with a magnifying glass) and using a special solution to make them easier to see. A Pap smear (a test that is performed during a gynecologic exam) and other tests can help diagnose an HPV infection.

Experts believe that when a wart is present, the virus is active and more likely to be contagious. When the wart disappears, the virus is still there but may be less likely to spread.

There are over 100 different strains of HPV. most people never show symptoms, or even know they have it. Women generally find out if a pap smear shows abnormal cells on the cervix. Aside from an outbreak of gential warts, men will most likely never know if they have it as it is not included in standard STD testing. It is estimated that 80% of the sexually active people in this country have HPV. most women will come in contact with 5-15 different strains in their lifetime. your body will usually kill the virus on its own. If you have had sex with more than one person who has had sex with more than one person, you've probably come in contact with HPV.

i know for hpv2 (genital herpes) usually when someone gets infected with it they have a really bad cold/fever and then bumps show up within a couple of days and if you get on medication they will be gone within 2-4 days

In most cases there are not any symptoms of HPV and the only way that you can tell is by having regular smear tests. in some cases they can cause genital warts.

What happens when u get it?

Symptoms of HPV normally appears in the form of a cauliflower-like growths called genital warts, that occur on and around the vagina, penis and anus . These may be also flat.

There are two types of strains of HPV. One is called low-risk and this tends to show up as genital warts on the external or interal genitalia. Warts can be removed through different methods, including burning or freezing them off. this needs to be done by a doctor though, and not with over-the-counter medication.

The other type is called high-risk. this rarely manifests itself in men–they just tend to be carriers. High risk HPV is what can cause abnormal cervical changes in women. Left untreated, this may develop into cervical cancer. It is really important for all women who are sexually-active to get Pap smears every year, because cervical cancer is very easy to treat when caught early.

It is important to note that the majority of people who have HPV never have symptoms that manifest themselves as genital warts or cervical cancer. but they can be silent carriers, as the virus can be passed on to others even if no symptoms are present. just because a woman has HPV does not mean she will definitely get cancer! Most women fight the virus off on their own.

Also, HPV is an extremely common virus. It is estimated that by the age of 50, 75-80% of sexually active women will have had some form of the other of HPV. It's just that many never realize they have it.

My OBGYN said that 3 out of 4 people have HPV and most have no symptoms at all. The only symptom of having it is if your doc has found some genital warts or cervical cancer. (or cancer cells)

You can't tell that you have HPV which can lead to cervical cancer without a test. you get a PAP smear and, if it comes back showing abnormal cells, they do a colposcopy to look at and, possibly, take a sample/biopsy from the cervix.

The vaccine can help prevent you getting the virus in the first place if you have not yet been exposed to it. Other than that, there is nothing you can do to avoid it if you have sex with anyone who has had sex with others. there are 120 types of HPV and most people have it. only a few cause cancer and only if allowed to stay in the body for a long time and only if a woman can't clear her body of the virus. If you are sexually active, you need to get regular PAP smears so that it can be caught and treated early if necessary. there are very few cases of advanced cervical cancer in women who get regular care.

Not sure why you are so concerned about this, but you should probably be more concerned with regular STIs. Use condoms. They don't protect against HPV but the protect against many things.

Different population may have different genital warts symptoms. For about half of those with Hpv, there are never any symptoms at all. most often, warts appear in one of two ways; as warts like you would see on another part of the body, or as flat lesions that are just barely raised above the skin. There is no cure for Hpv, but there are many treatments ready that will help. there are both home prescribe remedies such as topical creams, and healing procedures that will involve frequent trips to the doctor. Doctors warn against using non-prescription treatments. They often use abrasive chemicals to kill the warts, and these chemicals can have negative side effects if used incorrectly. the genitals are a sensitive area, so it’s not a good idea to take chances.

If you presume that you may have genital warts, you should see a doctor and abstain from sexual feel for a while. if you have genital warts, the virus can be passed on to your partner straight through skin to skin contact.

Taking care of the question early will save you issue later on. like any disease or health problem, early treatment is your best chance. your doctor will be able to recommend you on the best course of activity to make those warts disappear.

A new study on herpes found that your sexual partner may be free of symptoms such as genital lesions, but that doesn’t mean he or she is not carrying the sexually transmitted disease.

And yes, they can pass it on to you even if it doesn’t "look" like they have it, according to the study to be published in tomorrow’s Journal of the American Medical Association. about 16 percent of adults in the United States have the herpes simplex type 2 virus, but only 10 to 25 percent with herpes show symptoms, the study said.

Scientists found that viral shedding on the genital skin that can’t necessarily be seen could cause the disease to be passed on.

Many people are engaging in sexual activity not knowing they are  at risk of passing the virus on to their partners.

Herpes is one of the most common sexually transmitted diseases in the world with an estimated 536 million people infected with it.

The researchers said condom use, drug therapy and disclosure of the disease to partners can help curb the spread of herpes.

But these methods have had limited impact because so many people don’t know they have herpes.

So get tested and make sure your partner does too.
