1. What kind of diabetes?

2. how can it be reversed?

Great questions! Diabetes in cats is different than in humans. in humans there is type I (where the body is not producing enough insulin) and type II (“non- insulin dependent,” often caused by obesity, which can be controlled). Diabetic cats are not classified as type I or II; they are borderline diabetics. If we were going to classify diabetic cats capable of remission they are most closely related to type II diabetics.

Cats can go into remission and stay there for various periods of time. Sadly, with time, stress, diseases or weight gain will cause the pancreas to eventually give out, and the cat will become diabetic again (similar to type I). The goal of therapy is to reverse the symptoms of diabetes, including increased thirst, excess urination and weight loss, by lowering the blood sugar levels closer to that found in “normal” cats.

How can they go into remission?

Diabetics have high blood glucose levels, which negatively affect the beta cells in the pancreas. Insulin allows these cells time to recover and start working again properly. But cats that are overweight are resistant to insulin. therefore, it is important to put your diabetic cat on a weight-loss diet to allow the insulin to start working more efficiently. a low carb and high protein diet is thought to prevent spikes in blood glucose levels so the cat produces less simple sugar. Carbohydrates readily convert to simple sugars and raise blood glucose levels. High-protein and high-fat diets, on the other hand, are less likely to raise the cat’s blood glucose level than a diet consisting of carbohydrates.

Some fortunate cats are transient diabetics and no longer require insulin treatment after initial therapy. this type of diabetes is typically caused by drugs or other diseases. If the pet’s underlying disease is cured (often related to pancreatic diseases), or particular medications are discontinued, the transient diabetic cat can become a non-diabetic.

Unfortunately, diabetes in cats is very complicated and there is still a lot that is unknown. Fortunately, diabetes is on the forefront of numerous research projects.

Park City High School senior Kevin Whiting has felt pain in his lower abdomen all his life.

He felt it each time his body hit a growth spurt, and by the time he was 13 and a student at Treasure Mountain Middle School, the pain was so severe, he couldn’t eat, let alone function as a normal teenager.

His parents Vicki and Jeff took him to doctors and specialists but were told the same thing.

Kevin was anorexic.

The problem was, he wasn’t. Kevin had been misdiagnosed and was actually suffering from Wilkes Syndrome, an ailment where the Superior Mesenteric Artery cut off his small intestines so food couldn’t pass through.

The symptoms were severe weight loss and pain, said his mother Vicki Whiting during a joint interview she and Kevin had with The Park Record.

“Kevin was treated with anti-anxiety medication and anti depressants to cure his anorexia,” Vicki Whiting said. “That was when Kevin became suicidal because he was taking medicines he shouldn’t have been on.”

Unfortunately, once her son was labeled as anorexic, it became the de facto diagnosis.

“It precluded Kevin from getting the diagnostics he should have received, and to get the medical system to move past the short-hand explanation was one of the hardest things we had to go through,” she said.

After going to four or five specialists, the Whitings went to a family friend who was a colorectal surgeon.

“He knew me well enough to run the diagnostics that needed to be done, and the remedy was surgery,” Kevin said.

The Whitings’ plight is documented in a new book called “In Pain we Trust: A Conversation Between Mother and Son on the Journey from Sickness to Health.” The book will be released on Oct. 10.

The idea for the book came after Kevin’s duodenojejunostomy, which is an operation that forms a passage between the beginning and middle of the small intestine.

“The last time the surgery had been done at Primary Children’s Hospital was 10 years ago but at that point, Kevin was taller than five feet and weighed only 65 pounds,” Vicki said.

After the surgery, Kevin still was being nourished through a pick line that ran through his veins, said Vicki Whiting.

“We spent a lot of time in the car going from doctor appointments to school,” she said. “Usually his spirits were high, but one particular day, they weren’t and he said, maybe there was some way we could make it so someone didn’t have to go through what he did.”

The idea stuck with Vicki, who is a professor at Westminster College, and she decided to write a book.

“Since I do write as part of my occupation and my articles are meant to inform and share ideas, it was the only thing I had to share from my skill set,” she said.

The book was different than writing about mentorships, global leaderships and social entrepreneurship articles she was used to writing, but in some ways easier.

“Kevin and I both felt we had an important story to share,” she said. “We felt it could make a difference for other kids who may be suffering through chronic, complex illnesses, or who were having trouble having their voices heard as they worked through the medical system.”

At other times, it was more difficult.

“Going back through and reliving the painful story and realizing at many junctures, the outcome could have been much different, was hard for us,” Vicki said. “My husband Jeff would come home and know we had been writing because of the heaviness in the air.”

Kevin had a difficult time writing because it brought back scary events that he had tried to block out of his mind.

“It did help therapeutically, though,” he said. “It also put forward memories that I didn’t recall, because sometimes when something happened I was trying to distract myself form the pain or I was so drugged up that I didn’t remember.”

However, the writing sessions were important to both, so they continued.

“Because the book is chronological, I would write my section and tell Kevin what I was writing about and ask him about his takes on the events,” Vicki said. “He would give me his story or essay and I would transcribe it or edit it. to have Kevin’s voice in the book is brilliant and I think is a contribution that I haven’t found anywhere else.”

Another challenge was knowing when not to open the door too wide on the family’s privacy.

“I tend to live my life pretty open, so it wasn’t hard for me to write my part, but the tricky part of it all is the fact that it’s the story of our family,” Vicki said. “My husband tends to be the one who makes it through a problem and march forward, and still it’s hard for him to see the pictures. My oldest son, Philip is a private person, and then we have our youngest daughter Katie, so we had to make sure we weren’t bringing in aspects of our private life that others would feel uncomfortable having out in the public.”

Book publishers had different ideas of how to distribute the book.

“McGraw-Hill publishers saw it playing a role in nursing school as a comprehensive case to go along with a nursing fundamentals text,” Vicki said. “So we ultimately left it up to Kevin to choose.”

“I thought the book meant more as a story than as a text,” he said. “As a text, no one would attach to the characters as much.”

So the family chose to publish through Blooming Twig Books, which will release it as a story.

Having the book published helped Vicki deal with some of the uncertainties she faced during the crisis.

“I realize now that I did make the best choices I could have at the time,” she said. “Even if people don’t buy the book, it’s documented so people like Kevin’s kids and his grandkids can know who he is.”

Kevin still hopes the book will help parents, doctors and children listen to each other.

“I’d like it to helps a doctor be more compassionate with a patient or help with a parent navigate the medical system or have a kid deal with their own pains,” he said.

“In Pain we Trust” will be available Oct. 10 at amazon.com and by visiting vickiwhiting.com.

Unfortunately the prognosis in this form of cancer is poor. However less common cancers arising from hormone producing cells of the pancreas or pancreatic cysts have a much better outcome with treatment. Many a time the cysts are ignored, taking them to be benign, preventing cure. the early symptoms are often non-specific with loss of appetite, weight loss and dyspepsia. Tumours arising from the head of the pancreas can cause jaundice associated with itching. However, tumours occurring towards the tail of the pancreas can be silent killers, as often no symptoms occur until they are large and reach the final stage. at this point the enlarged tumour may be felt through the abdomen as a lump or can result in back pain.? ?Without treatment the average life span of these patients is only about 6-9 months. while surgery is the main form of treatment, only 5 to 10% of patients are amenable to surgery. Surgery extends the life span up to 2-3 years and is able to achieve cure in 15-20% of patients who are operated upon. Unfortunately, no transplant is possible for pancreatic cancer. Chemotherapy and radiation therapy help to extend the life span when surgery is not possible. They may be added to surgery to enhance its benefit.Contrary to popular belief about restrictions on diet after surgery, the patient can revert to normal healthy diet, as the pancreas continues to secrete enzymes.? Pancreatic cancer is more common in men though there is no particular reason for this. while it is not specifically genetic, certain rare diseases like Heredity Pancreatitis, causing inflammation of the pancreas, are caused by genetic abnormalities. In this case, the inflammation recurs starting from a young age, with a steep chance of developing into cancer in adulthood. the most common age group prone to pancreatic cancer is 40 to 60, while the incidence amongst children is extremely rare, almost non-existent.? the silver lining here is that expert care is available in the country to treat pancreatic cancer. However, since prevention is better than cure, a change towards a healthy life style, with less alcohol, abstinence from smoking and eating sensibly, can go a long way in checking its occurrence.

Sometimes none. The one and only obvious symptom is vaginal bleeding; hence the name "silent killer."

I may not be a woman but I've read too many stories of women dying of this disorder.

The first answer is wrong. Ovarian cancer does NOT have a symptom of bleeding. If it did it would actually be better since there are no concrete warning signs until the disease is advanced. Bleeding MAY be a sign of cervical or uterine cancer-not ovarian. The symptoms of ovarian cancer are vague-bloating in the abdomen or a feeling of fullness, constipation, gas, pain in the pelvic area, pressure or a persistent feeling of having to urinate, tiredness, weight loss, lack of appetite , pain in the back or legs. All of these together might point to ovarian cancer, but taken one by one, they could be signs of something much less serious.. Ovarian cancer can not even be felt during a pelvic exam in the beginning. it is only when the tumor is adanced that it can be felt, usually through a rectal exam. how do I know? been there, done that..

Tweety Bird, above got it right. I might add that my sister died of Ovarian Cancer with-in two months of it being diagnosed. usually if there are symptoms, or by the time they are taken seriously, it's too late. Ovarian cancer is the #5 cause of death for women, more common in women over 50 (66% are over 55). The American Cancer Society predicts 20, 180 woman will be diagnosed with Ovarian Cancer this year and 15,310 will not survive it. Very grim. The good news is that if diagnosed before it spreads beyond the ovary then the survival rate is 94%. The bad news is that it is rarely diagnosed at that stage because there are no symptoms or they are considered to be other things such as stomach problems.

I had a dream that my sister was dying of Ovarian Cancer, long before it was diagnosed. I had even documented it. but I didn't tell her till right before she died. She said she wouldn't have taken me seriously. I hadn't told her because it was so horrid and now I, in ways, hold myself responsible, because perhaps I could've saved her life.

I will tell you what I experienced because I was diagnosed with Stage 3 ovarian cancer last Sept.1.

I didn't really know anything was wrong with me until the day I got sick. There were small things going on that I didn't think anything about really. My stomach was often hurting me, whether I had eaten too much or not; I was tired easily. For the most part I didn't really have any symptoms. until that night.

It hit me like a ton of bricks, man! I had severe diarrhea and stomach pains I hope to NEVER experience again! My husband and I are Christians, and after he prayed for me had me get dressed and took me to the ER of our local hospital. They said I was dehydrated and drew some bloodwork, diagnosing me with a viral infection and sending me home 4 hours later. I never fully recovered from that and felt kinda ill the next couple days. When the feeling in my stomach still hadn't gone away that Tuesday, my husband took me back to the ER and they admitted me.

I hadn't eaten anything since that Saturday when I got sick. They hooked me to an IV and gave me some stuff to take for a test and I threw it right back up. I couldn't keep anything down. They did CT scans of my abdomen, sonogram of my abdomen, colonoscopy, barium enema. it was finally determined I had a stricture in my colon and it would have to be removed during surgery. When I went in for surgery that following Thursday, the general surgeon was shocked when she opened me up and found the cancer.

Those were my symptoms. not everyone deals with every symptom. The horrible thing about ovarian cancer is that it is the "silent killer" and most women who are diagnosed with it are in their 50's and up. me? I'm 32. was 31 when I was diagnosed.

Ovarian cancer is a malignant ovarian neoplasm (an abnormal growth located on the ovaries).Ovarian cancer is the fifth leading cause of cancer death in women (after lung, breast, colon and pancreas), the leading cause of death from gynecologic malignancies and the second most commonly diagnosed gynecologic malignancy
The risk for developing ovarian cancer appears to be affected by several factors. The more children a woman has, the lower her risk of ovarian cancer. Early age at first pregnancy, older ages of final pregnancy and the use of low dose oral contraceptive pills have also been shown to have a protective effect. Ovarian cancer is reduced in women after tubal ligation.

Symptoms-
sense of pelvic heaviness
vaginal bleeding
weight gain or weight loss
abnormal menstrual cycles
unexplained back pain that worsens over time
increased abdominal girth
non specific gastrointestinal symptoms:
vague lower abdominal discomfort
increased gas
indigestion
lack of appetite
nausea and vomiting
inability to ingest usual volumes of food
bloating
Additional symptoms that may be associated with this disease:
increased urinary frequency/urgency
excessive hair growth
Note: There may be no symptoms until late in the disease. In particular, women should watch for symptoms occurring in groups and lasting two weeks or more.

The treatments are as usual -
Surgery, Chemotherapy, radiation. -KILL CANCER

Best of Luck

Some signs that there is a problem with the ovaries (and that does not always mean cancer) is swelling of the abdomen. The swelling may come on suddenly or be pronounced over a period of days or weeks. some people report swelling of the knee and ankle on the opposite side from the affected ovary. sometimes it is noticeable by a rapid weight gain, discomfort in the lower abdominal area and can produce pain or there may be no pain.

i was diagnosed with ovarian cancer 2 yrs ago. i was having pain on my left side for about 2 days, and i thought i was just ovulating….but it only got worse. when i went in to the doc, my stomach looked like i was 6 months pregnant! when they went in, my ovary had exploded from the tumor.

what's so sad, is there are often symtoms, but they are often diagnosed as gastrointestinal problems. when you tell your doc some of the symtoms, they usually go straight for that…. here are some symtoms:
* unusual abdominal feeling of fullness
* pelvic discomfort
* unexplained indigestion, gas, or bloating
* pain during sexual intercourse
* abnormal bleeding
* swelling and/or pain in the abdomen
in some cases, there is no symptoms.
if you are having ANY concerns, please go to your doctor TODAY and tell him/her you want a vaginal ultrasound to check out your ovaries….they can see cysts and abnormalities this way…and you want a CA125 blood test. this blood test is not 100% accurate in diagnosing ovarian cancer….but nothing is! there is no screening test for it! do all you can! good luck and God bless you!
