What happened to all the money that was raised for Haiti after the earthquake ?

by Symptom Advice on January 5, 2011

Today the Haitians are living in squalor and are in danger from cholera outbreaks. There seems very little evidence of aid efforts or money being spent to improve conditions or indeed treat people with the symptoms of cholera properly. so what did happen to all the money raised. Remember those telethons in the US with Hollywood stars manning the phones that raised loads of money ? Just where did all that money go ?

The only way to gather money for any charity is with a leaky bucket. some of the money made it downhill to the needy, not much. the problem then becomes what to do with what gets there? the longer it sits unspent the more it gets pilfered. It's a great big problem that won't be solved by just throwing money in its direction. the logistics of rebuilding an entire nation has to be overwhelming. the country was a craphole before the quake, should it be rebuilt to craphole level or a little higher than craphole? Many problems that can't be fixed quickly.

It's worth reading the whole article, not just the headline, because questions about why the money spent isn't necessarily visible immediately are addressed by the agency.

It may also be of interest to know that in the immediate aftermath of the quake, one penny in every american dollar donated went directly to immediate relief, and 40 cents to supporting emergency teams, logistics etc.

One of the worst problems is the Haitian government, which has been so corrupt for so long that they can't even find clear title to lands for the 30,000 shelters the Red Cross has provided – which are now stuck in storage.

The Red Cross also decided not to label the supplies they provided, as that would have delayed distribution further. the result seems to be that the lack of visibility on packages is making people jump to the conclusion that they are doing nothing.

administration fees were taken from the money by high ranking officials and deposited in off shore banks. charity isnt cheap especially when it goes to a corrupt country, people have to be paid palms greased ect.

It went to pay all 'the Hollywood stars and other free-loaders' that were part of the scam..same as all the money for Pakistan floods and Indonisia sunami….nobody does anything for free….

You must know that NGOs have to eat, and very well.

It was stolen by Tony Blair, the ****.

Tis a corrupt country
