Abbott Park, Illinois.(NYSE: ABT) – Abbott today announced that the European Committee for Medicinal Products for Human Use (CHMP) has issued a positive opinion for HUMIRA? (adalimumab) in adults with moderate to severely active ulcerative colitis (UC) who have not responded to, cannot tolerate or have medical contraindications to conventional therapies. Based on the CHMP's positive opinion, a final decision from the European Commission is anticipated in the next few weeks. upon final decision, HUMIRA will be the first and only self-injectable biologic therapy available for moderate to severe UC patients.

UC is a chronic inflammatory bowel disease that causes inflammation in the colon and may lead to life-threatening complications. There is no known cure for UC other than surgical removal of the colon. it is estimated that UC affects up to 1.2 million people in the European Union and approximately 25 percent of UC patients will undergo some type of surgery to treat their symptoms during their lifetimes.

"a diagnosis of ulcerative colitis can be devastating — it can disrupt a patient's life and cause pain, bleeding and hospitalization," said John Leonard, M.D., senior vice president, Pharmaceuticals Research and Development, Abbott. The positive opinion for HUMIRA for the UC indication was based on two Phase III clinical trials which evaluated clinical remission with HUMIRA in adult patients with moderate to severe UC. HUMIRA will be indicated for the treatment of moderately to severely active ulcerative colitis in adult patients who have had an inadequate response to conventional therapy including corticosteroids and 6-mercaptopurine (6-MP) or azathioprine (AZA), or who are intolerant to or have medical contraindications for such therapies.

About UC

UC is a chronic inflammatory bowel disease that causes inflammation in the rectum and colon, resulting in diarrhea, rectal bleeding and abdominal cramping. On average, people are diagnosed with UC in their mid-30s, though the disease can occur at any age. The symptoms of UC tend to come and go, with varying periods of clinical stability punctuated by episodic flares of disease activity. Common symptoms include frequent loose bowel movements and rectal bleeding. Severe flares of UC can necessitate hospitalization and can be life-threatening. Treatment may include medication and surgery.

“Ulcerative colitis can be a very disabling condition and leaves people weak, tired, frustrated and lacking energy. It can change people’s lives completely. they can’t be very far from the toilet so aren’t able to go out very much. Patients tell me that when they go to a nearby town or city, they know exactly where every toilet is, because they often get very little warning about needing to go to the toilet. It can mean that people have accidents with their bowel motions. It’s an embarrassing condition – it’s a difficult subject to talk to people about.

“It is a serious inflammation of the large bowel, which is better-known as the colon. Where it should be pink, smooth and nice it becomes red, weepy and unhappy — it looks like you’ve taken the skin off your knee. The main symptoms are diarrhoea, blood in stools, stomach pains and feeling rotten. It goes up and down. You will have good periods of remission when you feel normal – that can be a month or even a few years – and bad periods when you feel dreadful and can be forced to go to the toilet six, eight or 10 times a day around the clock, including two or three times a night. if you can imagine having food poisoning and that going on for weeks on end, rather than days, that’s what it’s like.

“It’s quite a common condition. if you take ulcerative colitis together with Crohn’s disease, which has similar symptoms, they are known together as inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). one in 200 people in the UK develop IBD, so around 300,000 have that. Young people aged between 10 and 40 get it.

“It’s not a curable condition unless you have an operation. With surgery you take the colon out completely. People often need an external bag to collect their faeces, though some people get an internal pouch which lets them go to the toilet normally. so you wouldn’t have surgery unless you had to. However, one-third of patients end up having an operation to remove their colon at some point in their lives.

“The cause of colitis is unknown. It’s genetic to some extent, but less than with Crohn’s disease, but something unknown in the environment comes along and sets it off. It could be food, atmospheric pollution or stress – no one really knows what it is. It could be all of them.”

MANLY Vale funnyman Luke Escombe has spoken about his battle with Crohn’s disease at an emotional awareness lunch at Parliament House in Canberra yesterday.

The 33-year-old musician and comedian said the lunch, organised by Crohn’s & Colitis Australia, was an opportunity to speak honestly about living with the little known disease.

“It was quite powerful – I ended up having some MPs coming up to me in tears afterwards and telling me how moved they were with my speech,” he said.

“I was talking about 20 years of living with this illness, so it was powerful stuff. to speak honestly about it was a massive relief.” mr Escombe was diagnosed with Crohn’s disease when he was 14.

He’s had two major flare-ups which left him house-bound for years and even hospitalised him. he said the disease influenced his work and forced him to spend time in isolation. “if I have funny views it’s because my perspective that has been forced on me is that of an outsider,” he said.

His show, Chronic, performed at the Sydney Fringe Festival this year, incorporates aspects of living with the disease to create awareness. mr Escombe said he urged young people not to ignore the symptoms of the disease or suffer in silence.

“many people are diagnosed too late because they feel embarrassed or scared to go to their doctor,” he said. “once you accept the illness, you can learn to live with it and you can achieve amazing things.”

XIFAXAN has not been studied in patients with MELD scores greater than 25, and only 8.6 percent of patients in the controlled trial had MELD scores over 19. National & World Ag News Headlines Researchers Apply Large-Scale Sequencing on E. coli USAgNet – 12/02/2011 A team of academic and government scientists from the United States published data presenting the genomic blueprints and outbreak dynamics of the human pathogen Escherichia coli O157:H7 in previously unprecedented detail. Enterohemorrhagic E. coli of the serotype O157:H7 is the major cause of food borne disease, responsible for more than 76,000 cases alone in the U.S., with a potentially lethal outcome. This included the study of three widely publicized food-associated outbreaks of E. coli O157:H7 infections in 2006 that captured the attention of the U.S. Congress as well as the public health, forensic and lay communities, such as the severe 2006 multistate outbreak from ingested spinach that swept through 26 states.This information allowed the team to develop a high-resolution phylogenomic framework and follow the dynamics of pathogenome evolution at a high level of phylogenetic accuracy and resolution. Madison Folk, 17, was on a mission trip to Nicaragua in April when she experienced virus-like symptoms and ulcers and sores erupted in her mouth.

“We just thought it was the stress of traveling,” said her dad, Mark Folk, who also went on the medical mission trip.

But when they returned home, Madison Folk’s symptoms continued to get worse and it would be five months and numerous hospital stays before any treatment would bring relief.

The family has some help with the medical bills through a shared health care program called Samaritan’s Ministries. The program covers doctor bills, but doesn’t pay for medicine.

To assist the family with the mounting bills, friends and family are sponsoring Walk for Madison Nov. 12 in uptown Shelby. Registration will be at the Cleveland County Chamber, 200 S. Lafayette St., at 8:30 a.m. and the one-mile walk begins at 9 a.m.

“It’s hard to believe that people are doing the walk for me,” Madison Folk said. “It’s a nice thing.”

Diagnosis and questions

Madison Folk has Crohn’s disease, a hereditary condition that causes ongoing inflammation of the gastrointestinal tract. Crohn’s disease may occur in any area of the digestive tract. There can be healthy patches of tissue between diseased areas. Madison’s trip out of the country was one reason it took so long to make the diagnosis. Doctors had to rule out typhoid fever, parasites and other causes.

When doctors discovered Crohn’s, Madison Folk had lost 30 pounds. she had experienced severe pain, high fevers and three visits to the emergency room. The medicine helped for a short time, but then the symptoms came back worse than before.

“It hasn’t hit me that all that happened to me,” Madison Folk said. “for the longest time, nobody could help me. It was frustrating. my dad really helped a lot. He was there every step of the way. He could relate to how it felt.”

Mark Folk stayed with his 17-year-old daughter through the week, while his wife, Sheri Folk, worked and took care of their 11-year-old daughter, Sydnee. Mark Folk, founder of New Wilderness Adventures, a Christian ministry to men, and the pastor of a house church, couldn’t help but ask God why.

“I don’t understand it. There is a mystery in following God,” he said. “I was asking God, ‘Why is my child having to suffer?’ and he said, ‘you are going to have to fight for her.’ I said, ‘It’s too hard to watch her suffer,’ and God said, ‘I had to watch my child suffer.’”

Finding relief

In September Madison Folk was put on a feeding tube and a pediatric gastroenterologist at Levine’s Children’s Hospital ordered a colonoscopy, capsule endoscopy and endoscopy. The tests showed diseased areas in her small intestine. They suggested treatment with Remicade, a strong medication that costs $10,000 per dose.

“Mark has ulcerative colitis and we prayed so hard against that because Mark has dealt with it since he was in his 20s,” Sheri Folk said. “God has other plans in store for Madison. It broke our hearts and now we have to look ahead and ask ourselves, ‘What is going to be the blessing out of this?’ she has already been a blessing to the people at Levine’s. The nurses were amazed and commented on how well she took the feeding tube through her nose.”

Since beginning the treatments with Remicade, Madison Folk is gaining weight and feeling better. A senior at Thomas Jefferson Classical Academy, she’s been keeping up with her school work as a homebound student. she started back to school this week and went to a football game. The family is pleased to hear her whistling around the house again.

“she was so sick for so long. We are thankful that she is better,” Mark Folk said.

“We wanted God to heal her,” Sheri Folk added. “There are a lot of prayers going up for her. God used doctors and this medicine to bring about healing.”

(Springfield, MO) — Sunday, people were trying to find a cure for Crohn’s and Colitis, also known as irritable bowel syndrome.

Today they put on their walking shoes in the name of the cause.

“Right now we have raised probably over $15,000 for our first year,” said Jaimie Schere, Regional Walk manager.

It’s the first annual Springfield Take Steps Walk for Crohn’s and Colitis.

About 250 people took part in this inaugural event.

Organizers say the funds will go towards trying to make life more comfortable for those affected by the disease.

The money will also support education programs in the community.

Those we talked with say people don’t like to talk about Crohn’s because the symptoms are very embarrasing and they say walks like this help change that.

“It’s a very isolating disease and to see people out walking for those who have it and IBD and inflammatory bowel diseases and gives them hope, ” explained Rennie Auiler, who suffers from Colitis.

Organizers say they plan do to the walk every year in the fall.
