TORONTO — Parents who have a child with an eating disorder can go through a whole host of problems themselves — they feel guilty, anxious and ashamed that they can’t seem to help their child, say the authors of a new book.

“It’s a very challenging kind of an illness,” said Dr. Ahmed Boachie, program director of the Eating Disorder Program at Southlake Regional Health Centre in Newmarket, Ont.

“There are a lot of myths and misconceptions. so many, many times even some of us physicians don’t seem to get the illness — the nature of it and why people refuse to eat.”

Boachie and Dr. Karin Jasper, co-authors of “A Parent’s Guide to Defeating Eating Disorders” (Jessica Kingsley Publishers), bring years of expertise to the topic. Boachie said the subtitle refers to spotting a stealth bomber because an eating disorder can do damage before you know it’s there — it’s hard to detect on radar.

Parents should watch for a sudden change in the child’s relationship with the family, especially related to food — for example, suddenly making excuses about why she can’t be there at meals or saying “I’m not hungry, I’ll eat when I get to school,” Boachie said.

“Sometimes as they lose weight they become depressed and they isolate themselves from friends and they rationalize that, you know, ‘I need to take time to study,’ and they become alone, and you see them going on Internet sites and talking more about food.”

if a child protests before eating a meal and rushes to the washroom immediately after eating, a parent should be suspicious of intentions to throw up, he said.

other indicators could be a tendency to wear loose clothes, complaints of feeling cold or tired all the time, or even hair falling out.

“You better go to the family physician as soon as possible,” Boachie advised. “Every single day they delay getting the diagnosis and treatment, it’s not a good outcome.”

Jasper said it’s possible the doctor won’t recognize an eating disorder because symptoms can mimic some other kinds of illnesses, especially in the early stages.

“So it may be that the family doctor picks up that the child is depressed and sends the child to a psychiatrist to see about that, or it may be that he thinks the child is just having some dieting problems and sends her to the dietitian to get some advice about her food intake,” she said.

Bonnie Munslow of Aurora, Ont., struggled to figure out what was wrong when her daughter Sarah complained of stomach problems in Grade 8 or 9.

“She was having a hard time eating breakfast in the morning. We thought she was lactose intolerant so we were buying lactose-free milk and lactose pills and then she was avoiding cheese. That’s the way things started up, as far as we recall,” Munslow said.

Sarah’s concerned mother took her to the family doctor a number of times, thinking there might be intolerance to gluten, or a problem like Crohn’s disease related to the digestive system.

“And in that time period, which was probably a couple months, Sarah also started fainting, and of course we were very alarmed.”

the physician saw a loss of 15 pounds over several months, and asked Munslow if Sarah was dieting.

“Our family doctor was convinced that it was an eating disorder and Sarah wasn’t being forthcoming about it with the doctor, or us at all. It’s a very, very secretive disease.”

Eventually, Sarah “came clean” and received treatment that included a nine-week stay in hospital, Munslow said.

Jasper noted that a recent study found only eight per cent of family physicians surveyed, and 26 per cent of psychologists surveyed, said they had the tools necessary to diagnose and treat eating disorders.

Boachie said it’s often an independent, smart kid who listens to everybody and does homework who can develop an eating disorder, and the child or teen doesn’t want to give up their independence or admit to a problem.

Jasper said parents need to trust their own gut feelings.

“Many parents that we’ve talked to say that they’ve had to go several times back to the doctor to insist on having the child assessed again.”

Anorexia nervosa is characterized by deliberate weight loss, while bulimia nervosa involves repeated bouts of overeating and purging. Boachie says about five per cent of Canadians will develop eating disorders. among kids and teens, the incidence is zero to one per cent for anorexia, and around three to five per cent for bulimia, he said.

at Southlake, patients are interviewed and fill in questionnaires, and if physical complications are at a minimum, they begin therapy which usually involves family members.

But Boachie acknowledged there aren’t enough treatment programs in Canada.

“For every one that we get to a treatment centre, there will be more than 10 of them who will be out there without anybody pulling them up. We don’t have enough resources, and they quickly become overwhelmed.”

Left untreated, an eating disorder can result in serious medical complications, Jasper said.

“About up to 20 per cent of people with eating disorders will die, half of those as a result of the complications of the eating disorder, and about half from suicide,” she warned.

As for Sarah, now age 19, Munslow said she still sees Boachie, a psychiatrist, once every few months for a chat and to be weighed.

“She beat it. It’s always going to be in the back of her mind, and she says that. But coming with maturity and going through all the therapy that she did, hopefully there won’t be any relapses.”

UP to 4,000 Derbyshire people will be given free dental checks following concerns among NHS chiefs that too many are failing to see a dentist regularly.

The Government is desperate to get more people into the habit of regular check-ups so it has given the local NHS ?180,000 to tackle the problem.

Now the cash is being used to promote and pay for a scheme open to people who have not seen a dentist for two years or more.

They are entitled to ?17 vouchers to cover the standard cost of a check-up.

Only 57% of people in the county visit an NHS dentist regularly, although health chiefs do not know how many of the remainder get private treatment. Dentist Mak Sidhu, of Park Dental in Chaddesden, said people were particularly in need of financial help during the difficult economic times.

He said: “I’ve had several patients, particularly in the last two years, who need fillings but have told me they are not in pain so would rather putting off having treatment than pay.

“Some people need the money to spend on food, their kids and paying the rent.

“But my message is that, if you postpone going to the dentist, you will end up in more pain and suffering and will ultimately need more advanced – and therefore more expensive – treatment.” he also stressed that a whole range of health problems led to symptoms in the mouth and so could be diagnosed by dentists.

These include HIV, diabetes, oral cancer and the digestive disorder known as Crohn’s disease.

Mr Sidhu said: “I’ve seen figures showing that about 5,000 cases of oral cancer are diagnosed in the UK each year.” A total of 32 dental practices across the county have signed up to the scheme, which will run throughout March. A voucher for a free checkup has been printed alongside this article and can also be downloaded from derbycitypct.nhs.uk There are three charges for NHS care: ?17 for a standard treatment, ?47 for additional treatment such as fillings, root canal surgery and extractions and ?204 for crowns, dentures and bridges.

Free care is available to certain patients including under-18s, pregnant women and those claiming benefits.

Keith Mann, head of primary care for NHS Derby-shire, said that work had been carried out to encourage people to have regular checkups. he said: “The opening of six new dental surgeries in Derby has now made it easier than ever before for patients to see an NHS dentist in the city. “We’ve also invested more than ?3 million on new services in the county and set up dedicated dental helplines to give advice and support to patients in both Derbyshire and the city.

“Teeth are key factors in maintaining a healthy lifestyle, so there’s every reason to look after them – and losing or damaging them can have an enormous influence on your health as well as your confidence.” Patients are being encouraged to try to book early, as limited appointments are available. Registration at the practice is not required.

Las Cruces resident Carmella Myers was diagnosed with ulcerative colitis in 2001, and started attending the support groups, where she said she was more optimistic than most.

“I just see so many other things like cancer and lung disease that can kill people,” Myers said. “as far as I know, I’m not going to die from this, because it is treatable.”

unfortunately, Myers said, it is younger people who don’t deal with the issue well and need the most help and support.

“Parents will come with their children to seek help, and it’s really comforting for them to be open and frank about what is happening,” Myers said.

According to Bloom, finding the right doctor to create an appropriate treatment plan is just as important as telling the people in your life what is happening.

“unfortunately, it can be a very expensive disease because you can’t just go (to the doctor) once and find your magic cure,” Bloom said. “everyone is different.”

Of the different types, iron deficiency anaemia is the most common among women. DR BRIGID MONDA sheds more light on it

Blood is life — it feeds every cell in the body, gets rid of all the waste products, protects the body from infection and repairs any damage the body may sustain.

Without it, we cannot survive. Our blood is a thick red fluid pumped around the body by the heart. Blood is made up of two main components — plasma, the liquid part and a large number of different cells suspended in it.

The red blood cells are crucial as they contain a red pigment called haemoglobin that gives blood its red colour. They transport oxygen and carbon dioxide in the body.

The oxygen that we breathe in is absorbed through our lungs into the blood and is then carried by the haemoglobin in the red blood cells to all the other cells in the body. these other cells are all active factories working day and night to keep us alive and they need oxygen to perform their tasks. these little factories all produce waste products like carbon dioxide, which has to be disposed of before it accumulates and poisons the whole system.

This carbon dioxide is carried by the haemoglobin back to the lungs where it is expelled from the body as we breathe out.

Lack of oxygen

When one’s haemoglobin level is below that which is normal for one’s given age and sex, the person is said to have anaemia.

The low levels of haemoglobin translate into a lower oxygen carrying capacity of the blood and a poorer supply of oxygen to the tissues, which then causes the typical symptoms of anaemia.

The person is pale because of the decreased level of redness of the blood and because blood is shunted from the peripheral organs like the skin to the more essential ones like the brain and kidneys.

The affected person is hypersensitive to cold also because of poorer skin blood flow; they are dizzy and have headaches because the brain is not getting enough oxygen.

They get palpitations because the heart pumps faster than normal to get this blood with its low oxygen content to the vital organs of the body. if the anaemia is severe, the heart will fail. Anaemia also lowers resistance to infection and increases chances of miscarriage. there are different types of anaemia with as many different causes. of these, iron deficiency anemia is the most common and mostly affects women. Iron is required for the manufacture of haemoglobin by the body and a lack of it causes iron deficiency anemia.

Common causes of iron deficiency anaemia are an iron deficient diet, poor iron absorption due to certain intestinal diseases, hookworm infection, malaria, heavy menstrual bleeding, poorly spaced pregnancies which deplete iron stores, blood loss from bleeding peptic ulcers or piles.

Vitamin B12 deficiency anaemia is caused by a lack of vitamin B12, which is also essential for formation of haemoglobin. It may be due to a deficient diet particularly in vegetarians, disease of the small intestine causing poor absorption of the vitamin like in Crohn’s or Coeliac disease or one’s stomach may not secrete enough of a special factor that enables the vitamin to be absorbed.

Anaemia itself is not a disease but a sign of another underlying problem. So when correcting it the underlying problem has to be treated too.

For example, for nutritional anemia like iron deficiency anaemia or vitamin B12 deficiency anaemia, treatment of the primary cause like worm infections, malaria, bleeding ulcers and vegetarian diet are addressed first and then supplements and an improved diet do the trick.

DALLAS, Sept. 27 (UPI) — People with chronic diarrhea, constipation or painful bloating may be suffering from celiac disease, a condition that affects millions, a U.S. researcher says.

Dr. Prabhakar Swaroop, a gastroenterologist at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas, says celiac disease is a digestive disorder affecting people sensitive to gluten, which is found in wheat, rye, barley and oats.

In people with celiac disease — including Elisabeth Hasselbeck of ABC’s “The View,” and political commentator and sports journalist Keith Olbermann — the immune system responds to gluten by attacking the small intestine and wiping out tiny fingerlike protrusions called villi, which help absorb nutrients into the bloodstream.

More than 2 million people in the United States have been diagnosed with celiac disease.

“It is often difficult to diagnose because its symptoms are similar to other digestive diseases and conditions such as Crohn’s, irritable bowel syndrome, ulcerative colitis and intestinal infections,” Swaroop says in a statement. “A gluten-free diet is the only treatment for people with celiac disease. Sticking to the diet is a lifetime requirement because eating any gluten will cause more damage.”

Leanne Downie, who suffers from Crohn’s disease, has been nominated for the Coca Cola Future Flames initiative – a nationwide search for young people to carry the prestigious flame during the torch relay next summer.

Future Flames has targeted young people who use their passion in areas such as sport and physical activity, music and dance and community and the environment to spread happiness in their local communities.

The South Cheshire College student is being backed by friends, family and other students after bravely battling with her illness and raising funds for numerous charities at the same time.

Leanne, 19, spends most of her spare time organising fun events to raise cash to help people with Crohn’s disease as well as other cancer charities.

she is also a member of the North Midlands group of the National Association for Colitis and Crohn’s disease (NACC).

Leanne said: “I feel really honoured to be nominated for Future Flames.

“I’ve always been a people person and try and help others in any way I can.

“I know what it’s like to have a debilitating illness and all the fundraising I’ve done has been my way of giving something back.

“People have been selected from up and down the country for this and hopefully if enough people vote for me I’d love to go all the way and carry the torch at such a fantastic global event.”

(certolizumab pegol) syringe showed patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) rated it higher on nineteen preference and performance-based scores, when compared to the conventional prefilled syringe used in the pivotal registration study RAPID 2.1, 2 Additionally, the results, recently published inApplied Ergonomics, showed that 77% of the patients involved in the study were able to exert greater force when using the OXO designed syringe compared with the conventional prefilled syringe.1

?If untreated the effects of RA can often limit a patient?s hand strength and dexterity, which can lead to difficulties in self-administering medication at home,? said Michael Schiff MD, University of Colorado, USA. ?The results from this study reinforce the importance of understanding the limitations RA can impose on a person?s daily activity and the importance of providing solutions to patients that will improve the everyday management of their disease.?

The study assessed the effect of syringe design on the ability of RA patients to perform injections. Twenty-three RA patients participated in this study to compare preferences and injection forces using a conventional syringe and the OXO designed certolizumab pegol syringe. Injection force measurements were collected in two ways: (a) isometric forces, with the syringes? plungers in fixed positions and (b) forces exerted during injection of the medication. Subjects? grip and pinch strengths were also measured. using a 7-point scale (1 was the worst and 7 the best rating) a perception questionnaire gauged subjects? impressions and preferences. Injections were performed using simulated skin pads. one syringe, referred to as the RAPID 2 syringe, was a standard pre-filled ?off-the-shelf? syringe. The second syringe was the ergonomically designed syringe created by Smart Design, OXO, and UCB.

As part of the study, a patient questionnaire evaluated perceptions of the two prefilled syringes and compared patient views on ease-of-use, physical characteristics and general preferences across twenty different attributes. Of the twenty attributes, 15 were statistically significant at the 95% confidence level, and 16 were statistically significant at the 90% confidence level. Results showed that patients found the OXO designed syringe more comfortable (6.0 (?1.0*)) vs. 4.2 (?1.7*)) and easier to inject (5.5 (?1.3*)) vs. 4.0 (?1.8*)) than the traditional syringe.1 furthermore, patients agreed the OXO designed syringe provided more control (5.5 (?1.7*) vs. 4.4 (?2.0*)) and the larger design of the plunger made injections easier (5.7 (?1.7*) vs. 4.3 (?2.0*)).1

Designed in partnership with OXO, the certolizumab pegol prefilled syringe incorporates several key features for RA patients, including a non-slip finger grip, a finger loop on the needle shield and a larger than usual plunger. Development of the syringe was initiated when UCB patient research identified self-injection with a conventional syringe as a challenge for many people with RA.

UCB and OXO spent time discussing design features with RA patients to establish their needs as part of the design process. The result was a syringe designed specifically for patients with RA. In March 2011, the UCB/OXO prefilled syringe received the coveted GOOD DESIGNTM Award for the patient-friendly design and packaging.3 The GOOD DESIGNTM Award is not the first that UCB has been recognised by the design industry for its Cimzia?4 2009 Silver Spark Award,5 2010 iF Product Design Award,6 2010 Universal Design Award,7 2010 Medical Design Excellence Award (MDEA),8 2010 Red Dot: Product Design Award.9

In RA controlled clinical trials, 5% of patients discontinued taking Cimzia? due to adverse events vs. 2.5% for placebo.Cimzia? is contraindicated in patients with hypersensitivity to the active substance or any of the excipients, active tuberculosis or other severe infections such as sepsis or opportunistic infections, moderate to severe heart failure.before initiation of Cimzia?, evaluate patients for both active or inactive (latent) tuberculosis infection.
