Of all things that could go wrong “down there,” prostatitis is among the least serious.

But tell that to the man suffering from it.

Prostatitis is a urological condition marked by varying degrees of painful inflammation and infection of the prostate – that squishy walnut-shaped gland just below the bladder. It produces the fluid in semen and can trouble men as they age.

Experts say the disease is unrelated to prostate enlargement or prostate cancer. And while all three can coexist, one does not cause the other.

Prostatitis is usually diagnosed by a digital rectal examination, according to the American Urological Association Foundation.

The procedure not only determines whether the prostate is swollen and tender but serves as a barometer for pain and discomfort.

Other tests a doctor may consider using before making a diagnosis include a transrectal ultrasound, urine samples, prostatic fluid specimen, blood and/or semen samples.

Treating prostatitis will depend on the type of infection, from acute bacterial prostatitis – a severe urinary tract infection associated with fever, chills and lower back pain that requires a visit to the doctor or hospital — to the slow-burning symptoms of chronic prostatitis, which is more common.

We asked Dr. Inderbir S. Gill, professor and chairman of the USC School of Urology at the Keck School of Medicine, to shed light on the disease and its treatment.

Q: Is prostatitis a serious condition?

A: Well, acute prostatitis is a serious condition, yes. It can result in pretty high toxicity and fever and has to be treated urgently. Chronic prostatitis, on the other hand, is a smoldering, ongoing pain which is not that serious. Although certainly if you were to ask the patient, it makes their life miserable.

Q: does it affect fertility?

A: It certainly could. People with chronic prostatitis may have erectile dysfunction. Infection can occur in the semen as well. It does not lower sperm count per se, but if one is not in the mood, one is unlikely to make babies.

Q: how is it some men get chronic prostatitis?

A:Infection can occur anywhere in the body, right? so it can potentially occur in the prostate as well. The problem is there is a prostate/blood barrier which decreases the penetration of antibiotics into the prostate. sometimes it is hard to get appropriate antibiotic levels in the prostate and therefore, this infection, once it occurs, is not the easiest thing in the world to get rid of.

Q: can prostatitis be cured or is it just managed?

A: Managed.

Q: how?

A: Frequent ejaculations, antibiotics, painkillers, anti-inflammatories, hot sitz baths, etc., etc.

Q: Is surgery ever an option?

A: no. in 20 years I’ve not had a patient do it.

Q: can someone have prostatitis and not know it?

A: It’s unlikely. This thing will get your attention and it will make your life miserable, period.

Hi everyone

I was wondering if anyone else here can relate to the symptoms I have been experiencing recently. here they are…

* Mild to moderate shortness of breath.
* Frequent itching on arms, stomach, chest and legs
* some loss of libido with delayed ejaculation

I've had the shortness of breath (where you feel like you can't get a "full" breath) off and on for years along with tons of tests and everything always came back normal so it was concluded that it was simply anxiety (which I take Ativan for). For the last few weeks though, it has been pretty bad (especially during excersize). I should also mention that I have a lot of allergies, sinusitis, rhinitis, etc and I also have a lot of animals. I'm pretty sure the breathing problem isn't caused by my heart because I've had numerous recent chest X-rays, a stress test, lots of blood work, etc. I don't think it's anxiety or panic attacks either because I'm not anxious most of the time and because the shortness of breath is present even when I take the Ativan.

The itching is somthing that has started within the last week and I'm not sure what is causing it except that I have been eating a lot of chocolates lately but then again, I have never had this kind of reaction to chocolate in the past.

The loss of libido, delayed ejaculation has been with me for about 3 weeks. I do have a history of prostatitis but I don't currently have it. I am an alcoholic who drank for a year and a half, then quit for a year, then drank for a year and just quit for good 15 days ago. I also stopped smoking and only chew now.

Other than that, I am a male in my 40's, I eat healthy but spend way too much time at the computer and probably don't get nearly as much excersize as I should be getting.

Anyway, can anyone else relate to these symptoms?. I'd really appreciate hearing from you and getting some input.

Anxiety, Asthma and Eczema is my guess. You could also be allergic to animals with fur. many people I know are too.

How long do the symptoms last. I have this and have been on antibiotics for a week and I am getting worse. I have started to run a fever and I have chills and now I am coughing up things.

Ok, i can tell you that prostatitis cna be divided into two types,Chronic and acute.If it is acute ,aome antibiotics can treat it.While if it is acute, it may be hard.So you should know taking antibiotics will cost a large pennies to your body,it has side effect.It also cna produce drug resistance and no actual effect.you can try to go to hospital for operation or choose other med.Diureitc anti-inflammatory pill is a right choice.It has cured my aunt .you can try.

Time to take yourself back to the Dr. Antibiotics for a week should have greatly improved your symptoms and have not. Chills and fevers are also signs hat you are not getting better. The cough may be unrelated but at the same time just coincidental you may have picked up a respiratory bug. Your dr. is the only one who can tell for sure.

It is really that you have go back to the doctors and have a check , prostatitis is caused by bacteria and you will suffer from more complications if you leave it untreated , the Diuretic and anti-inflammatory pill can help you to cure your prostatitis , your fever and chills are all the symptoms of prostatitis , you have to get the treatment as soon as you can . Please do not waste time on taking antibiotics , that does not work for your prostatitis. Go back to the doc and seek some good drug to use , the herbs are the good selections, you can use the google search engine to get more related information .

Ive had prostatitis for about 2 months. Symptoms are: painful testicle (only 1, the left) dripping urine. and I'm just starting to feel better, but now I'm dripping what feels like semen. but it's clear-ish. but it's thick like semen. Help! Why am I doing this? Is it healing?

I've got a chronic pain in my prostate region. sometimes the specific area of pain moves to different areas, such as down into my thigh, but the pain is always on the right side. I occasionally have a discomfort in the tip of my penis, like a chafing feeling. It's not sore to the touch, and goes away after several days. Blood tests are clear, it's not STD. My first doc(GP) thought it might be epididimitis, and I've been on Cipro, Zithromax, and Doxycycline, but nothing fixes it. I had a testicular ultrasound which was clear. The urologist diagnosed porstatitis and prescribed Avodart, which I've been on for over a month now, while continuing Doxycycline. The pain comes and goes, but never goes away completely. Muscle relaxers and ibuprofen provide little to no relief. The question is, are these symptoms common for CPPS or Prostatitis? What other medications or treatments can I try? could it be something else? Any suggestions (other than go see another doc) would be greatly appreciated!!

Im 28 and diagnosed with prostatitis again. 1st time at 26 (worst pain I ever had until they gave me the right diagnosis). Been on antibiotics for a 8 days now and doesn't seem to help this time around. plus I fell sick like flu and get pains in my lower abdomen. has anyone else had these symptoms? what are some other symptoms that are expereinced not listed on websites?

I have recently been diagnosed with prostatitis due to some pains I've been having. I've been given an antibiotic for ten days. Haven't had the pain in quite some time so hopefully I'm good to go.

The symptoms are off and on. Sensitivity that is mind numbing and constant urgency. can xanax or flomax help?

When I urinated and ejaculated I had a burning feeling and I started drinking a lot of water and my urge to urinate went away and my burning while urinating went away. Is it a coincidence, or what ?

The only reason why it burned when you urinated is because you ejaculated and the semen just passed through the penal canal. I'm pretty sure you don't have an infection. The best way to hydrate your body if you dehydrated though is to drink warmer water closer to your body temperature or if you don't like that swirl the water around in your mouth to cool it off. The body loves things its own temperature.
