Sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) seem to be a taboo subject with the majority of the public. People know what they stand for, have some knowledge about them, and yet become almost prudish when the subject arises in general conversations.
For many people, when they hear the words sexually transmitted disease, they automatically think that it is something that is stuck with you for live. however, this is not always true. in fact, not all sexually transmitted diseases are permanent; however, there are also kinds that will stick with the infected for the rest of their life. some STDs can be cured, and there are ways of managing the symptoms.
The sexually transmitted diseases that can be cured are all various types of bacterial infections: Gonorrhea, Chlamydia and Syphilis, are the big three that have cures. all three can be ‘silent’, meaning there can be no symptoms while you are infected, and must be diagnosed and treated quickly to avoid permanent damage.
- Gonorrhea, one of the most common sexually transmitted diseases is treated with a course of antibiotics. however, if it is left alone or go undiagnosed, it can result in Pelvic Inflammatory Disease. it can also lead to scarring of the urethra, which can lead to infertility.
- Chlamydia – Taking medication treats Chlamydia, but just as with many other sexually transmitted diseases, if it is not diagnosed early enough, it can cause damage to the reproductive system in women and it can even lead to infertility in men.
- Syphilis is easily treatable with penicillin, but this will not reverse any of the damage done to the body. if a person has Syphilis, and it goes undetected for a long period of time there can be permanent damage to many parts of the body both internally and externally. Untreated Syphilis can even kill the patient.
One must remember that a cure does not mean the sexually transmitted disease cannot be caught again. Just because someone gets a clean bill of health does not mean that they are not immune to getting another sexually transmitted disease.
If you are suspicious that you may have come in contact with someone who has a sexually transmitted disease, or even if you think that you are infected, then make the right choice and get tested immediately. As you can see, many of the STDs can be cured; however, if you wait there might be permanent damage that could have been avoided.
