Do i have dyslexia – are these symptoms?

by Symptom Advice on December 31, 2010

if i keep spelling certain words wrong and if i cant read properly – but need to draw diagrams to understand – does that mean i got it? also if i got it is it possible that i could have gone through life until now not knowing – does it get worse with age like alzheimers?

Saw my mate outside the Doctor's today looking really worried.
"What's the matter?" I asked.
"I've got the big C,"he said.
"what, cancer?"
"no, dyslexia."

No, it doesn't get worse with age. you may have it but I can't say you have. you would need to be diagnosed. I used to work for Dyslexia Action and there are many different symptoms.

well it doesn't look like u have dyslexia from ur perfect typing.

I was 20 and doing an English degree before i was diagnosed with dyslexia so no its not too late, though i dont know how old you are. it doesnt get worse with age, it just depends which enviroments you are exposed to as to wether it becomes more noticable or not. you can have a free test at most colleges or universities or you can also contact your local council or education centre but if you are out of education you may have to pay (about £250 i belive).

Symptoms include:
– family members with learning disbailities (thats what its labbelled as, horrible i know)
– misreading words, numbers (i.e. reading 7654 as 7456 or something similar)
– mispelling even when you KNOW how the word is spelled (adding extra letters on or missing letters off)
– confusion or lack of speed when reading aloud or to yourself

As I've learnt from my best friend who was diagnosed at 15 there are many different types of dyslexia (I'm rubbish as maths but have a good vocabulary, spellign range and reading speed for example while she is great with numbers but has real trouble writing) so it will be difficult to know without a full diagnostic test.

When I did Dyslexia as part of my degree – the professor pointed out that all people at sometime show traits of dyslexia. however the two symptoms can be pointers to dyslexia. other pointers are:

poor coordination therefore not able to do sport well
inversion of vowel sounds.
problems distinguishing left from right.
sequencing problems

No it does not grow worse with age and there is much you can do to overcome the problem.

I have suffered with dyslexia, for so long it blighted my life. however, using power learning techniques I have two degrees and seven professional qualification.
