Why do we feel bloated?
It is often a sensation we certainly have when we feel our abdomen is bigger than what we’re used to. it can either be due an effective thing like relaxing the abdominal wall, or because of excessive gas. Will not confuse this with distension, the physical finding (not really a feeling) due to abdominal fat, fluid, excessive gas or tumor.
Why can we have flatulence or pass gas?
We either swallow air or even the bacteria in this intestine produce gas. Discomfort is often cause because of the bacteria producing excessive gas. Bacteria act on undigested foods like starch and cellulose, which has passed the small intestine and form methane, hydrogen and carbon. CO2 immediately gets absorbed through the intestine and will not cause symptoms.
Some sugars may also be not well absorbed like lactose (milk), fructose (candies and drinks), sorbitol (artificial sweetners) etc. Starches commonly cause intestinal gas, examples are rice, wheat, corn and oats. Common offenders are wheat, oats and potatoes. Rice is definitely digested as well as doesn’t cause a lot of gas. Whole grain flour contains fiber to cause more gas than refined flour. Kidney beans, cabbage and certain fruits also cause more gas as a consequence of poorly digested starches. most fruits and veggies contain cellulose that is utilized by bacteria very slowly and produce much gas.
All this swallowed air and gas manufactured by bacteria is propelled forward by intestinal peristalsis or rhythmic contractions of the gut, a variety of it is absorbed thru the intestinal lining to the blood stream and excreted inside breath, several of the gas is utilized up by ‘good’ bacteria within the gut thus removing it and the rest is burped out or passed thru the anus.
What are the causes of too much gas?
1. Everyone is unique and are also their bacteria for their intestines! some bacteria produce more gas plus some less.
2. some people have poor digestion plus more undigested food reaches the colon to the bacteria to act. Examples are coeliac disease, lactose intolerance and pancreatic insufficiency.
3. Bacteria usually are confined to the colon can sometimes spread towards the small intestine. they act on a lot of undigested food within the small intestine and develop a lot of gas. this is what’s called small bowel bacterial overgrowth, and that is seen in intestinal obstruction as a result of surgical adhesion, scarring, narrowing of intestine, poor movement of the gut, severe constipation, paralysis of stomach or gastroparesis like diabetics, poorly functioning muscles on the gut called chronic idiopathic pseudo-obstruction and ibs.
What is the strategy to excessive gas?
1. for anyone who is sensitive to milk and milk products, cut down or eliminate it, or use lactaid inside the milk.2. If certain sugars cause symptoms, then eliminate them. Maybe it’s certain fruits, juices or even vegetables. keep a tabs on which foods cause most symptoms and in many cases keep a diary for any week.3. Avoid dietetic foods, sugar-free candies, gum, carbonated beverages and drinking with a straw.4. Eat slowly and chew more, when you’ve got dentures make sure they fit well.5. Restrict beans, lentils, carrots, onions, brussels sprouts, cabbage, prunes, fruits like apples, pears and peaches and wheat or grain products which might be all gas causing foods.6. Avoid wheat/gluten if celiac disease is diagnosed.7. Medicines like Gas X, Mylicon, Phazyme, Mylanta gas, Beano, Charco tabs are helpful in improving symptoms of gas.8. should there be obstruction present, surgical intervention ought to be considered.9. Prescription medicines like erythromycin and Reglan, Xifaxan could also have a role if your doctor thinks so that it is appropriate.10. Probiotics are increasingly being recognized as playing an important role in the signs of gas and ibs with constipation and or diarrhea. some are Align, Culturelle, Florastor, various yoghurts like Activia and many many more.
