Symptoms of Hormonal Imbalance

by Symptom Advice on December 8, 2010

Hormones are the endocrine gland secretions which are transmitted via blood to the body tissues or organs for regulating specific functions. The hormones aid in repairing the cell and are responsible for growth, appetite, reproduction and metabolism. The thymus, pituitary glands, adrenal glands, thyroid glands pancreas and the sex glands in both men and women produce hormones that are directed towards the specific organs.

The destination for the specific hormones is recognized by receptor proteins that are present in the organs. thus each time the hormone is released by the glands, the receptor organ for the specific hormone sends out a signal. The hormones on recognizing the signals move towards the receptor thus bringing about a change in the body chemistry. Unfortunately in certain cases there might be an imbalance of the hormones in the body that can be caused by a number of factors.

A large number of factors contribute to hormonal imbalance in both men and women. Underlying health conditions such as diabetes, thyroid problems or growth of tumors can trigger off hormonal imbalance. Women are increasingly prone to this problem during menopause or pregnancy. Moreover polycystic ovarian syndrome, intake of contraceptives or antibiotics can result in high estrogen levels and lowered progesterone levels in women.

The most common symptoms of hormonal imbalance is anxiety, hormonal headaches, night sweats, acne, obesity, a lack of appetite, difficulty in concentrating, gum problems and body odor. A person may suffer from irritability, mood swings, disturbing memory lapses and low sexual drive. A rapid pulse, sore joints and hair loss are some other signs of hormonal imbalance in people

Gastrointestinal problems such as indigestion, bloating, nausea and gas are one of the most common effects of a hormonal disorder. Women who suffer from hormonal imbalance may display symptoms such as hot flashes, premenstrual syndrome, polycystic ovaries, painful or unusually periods, breast tenderness, vaginal dryness and infections, uterine fibroids and urinary tract infections. Infertility, endometriosis, and osteoporosis are some of the other problems caused by the hormonal imbalance in women.

In men the common symptoms of this disorder are an enlarged prostrate, erectile dysfunction, low sperm count, prostrate cancer and painful urination.
